I figured that's what you meant. :)

Yes, good old days.

Kids were able to play outside until dark. Otherwise, we came indoors only if the weather was bad, to use the bathroom, or to eat supper.

We walked or biked everywhere.

We spent no time on the phone.

The only indoor games that we played were at a table with family and friends, face-to-face.
Maybe we need to start building 'family-friendly' homes. Build it with a very limited amounts of plug-ins for electrical devices. You can start by not having any in the children's bedrooms, ok maybe one for a lamp. Parent's can also greatly limit the amount of 'plug-in time' for kids. I know of one lady that limits her children to just two hours on Saturday nights, that's it. She makes sure her kids are kept busy with other things such as school work, books, and family projects such as the garden and yard work. Her kids are 14 and 16, neither of them have a cell phone. The 16 year old is about to get a part-time job and her mom says she can spend her money on whatever she wants but if it begins to interfere with school and family time, she will confiscate it. I say this mom has her kids focused in the right place, and while I think even for myself it's a tad strict, I still think it's a good way to raise a kid.

Sounds like my days as well, although we even played outside in the rain. Ping pong in the garage was out idea of an indoor game. Most of my summer nights were spent in a backyard tent. TV was for football on Sundays. McDonalds was on report card day only....they used to give a free cheeseburger for each "A". I fed the family :)

I worked at McDonalds as a teen.....I got fired though :(

Going to McDonalds is also a social thing. Parents arrange play dates there. It gives the kids an opportunity to play in the tubes (safely and without worrying that the kids are going to destroy something). Parents get out of the house for some adult conversation with other parents. And it's cheap. Other entertainment places are expensive. I live in a climate in which the kids have to stay indoors a lot. My kids are older now and my McD days are over.

See post 162.......I grew up in your climate.....kids didn't HAVE to stay indoors in my day....

As for the first part, wouldn't it be great if parents were playing WITH their kids in a park rather than gossiping with their friend and stuffing their face with fat while the kids play in germ filled plastic tubes???

Since you're so judgmental, you were the perfect parent 24/7, huh?

I'm glad that I don't sit around talking about the "old days," even though I remember them. lol

Perfect, nah. But I enjoyed spending time with my kid.

Old days???? You said Houston was too hot for kids to play outside.....I was merely calling BS

Even when I stayed indoors I read books, drew pictures, played with my dolls, created things with parts from Radio Shack or plastic brick buildings, made craft projects (dioramas were my specialty), or had adult conversations with my parents and grandparents ( ).

Ewww, those tube things seem so nasty.

I remember moms visiting each other at the kitchen table, or over fences, or from their windows across the alley.

Besides, I thought all the moms were working now so they don't need more "grownup" time do they?

Part of my childhood was spent living in the Mojave Desert. I loved it! It was the perfect setting for playing cowboys and Indians. We also rode bikes, roller skated, and built forts from scrap materials. We had a small kiddie pool for my brother and me.

Our parents took us to Red Rock Canyon, an Indian museum, Knotts Berry Farm, and an old mining "ghost" town.

One of my chores was removing the tumbleweeds from the yard after wind storms.

Ah, nostalgia. :)

When forced indoors it was electric football for me....or puzzles. The adults were not worth talking to....

Yeah I got in one of those tubes at a place where parents were encouraged to join in.....Ewwww is right. We never went back. There was a place called the Little Gym that was somehow affiliated with Gymboree....We loved that place...it was very clean.

They didn't have such things when I was a kid.

The playground at my one elementary school was paved blacktop with unpadded playground equipment. We played dodge ball and all our recess games out there. Of course, that kind of surface would be totally unacceptable now. I'm surprised we survived.

Good point.

I spent more time inside, reading books. My parents were afraid I would get run over, or picked on.

And they did take me to McDonald's. I remember being required to drink milk and finish dinner and then they would buy me a Coke.

And yes I am fat. But my kids are not. I never forced them to eat to get a sweet reward, and I just did let them play outside all the time too.

it's funny, I rarely go to McDonalds while I was growing up even though my friend owned six successful McDonald's. Sadly, she died of breast cancer. :(

This is pretty much a very pointless ban...there are far more serious problems than this, seriously...

TXgolfer, you are about 280 miles from the Gulf Coast. Allow me to ship some of the lovely Gulf Coast humidity to you! Or better yet, come on down to the beach during August. Seriously, it's been nice down here so I recommend the beach now. Come on down and we can have a drink on the boardwalk.

I've enjoyed all of my time with the kids, even the time at the evil Mickey D's, but I am grateful that we go to better places to eat now. lol

I grew up down there....moved when I went to Tech....never went back. I was in the shithole commonly known as Alief.

But....I am always game for a drink....When did they build a boardwalk? Clear Lake?
