Happy Meal Banned

I wonder, if teachers taught basic nutrition in 3rd-6th grade, it could potentially have a better effect on the children than having no happy meals.

How about some Mulligan Stew? :)

Come to think of it......I hanker for a hunk of cheese....

Or my personal favorite, Brunswick Stew? :D

Are those clips from the days before or after closed captioning became a standard?

Early 70's so I would guess before.....heck they were barely in color.....but given the decade that is probably for the best.

Naisho:

1. Overindulgence of food

Hard to indulge a pound of apples or carrots. You'd be full before you could eat them all. Fast food on the other hand is EASY to overeat. Even fatty nuts are difficult to overindulge - its packed with so much fiber that it bulks up your stomach. Don't believe it? Put a cup of water and 1/4 cup of nuts/seeds in a blender and blend it just for a couple of seconds. It bulks up and it will be hard to remove from the blender without using spoon. That cannot be said for fatty junk food - they're super concentrated and don't bulk up as quick as nuts/seeds do.

The main complaint from people who were put on DASH diet (low sodium high fiber diet) is that they feel like they're overindulging and they cannot eat more grains even though they are LOSING weight! They have no problem gaining weight with junk food.

2. Lack of exercise

While lack of exercise is bad, it's actually NOT effective for weight loss. To lose weight, you have to stop eating too much. Studies have confirmed over and over - exercise doesn't work for weight loss. It just takes way too much exercise to burn off a single slice of cheesecake.

3. Parental (lack) education or personality
4. Parental/Individual/Child Awareness

While it's good to raise awareness and can produce results, a lot don't realize how much they eat. People say, "yes" when asked to supersize. They don't REALLY think about it and as a result, they overeat.

"I wonder, if teachers taught basic nutrition in 3rd-6th grade, it could potentially have a better effect on the children than having no happy meals."

I doubt it.

"Do we ban video games since, having too much of it can cause children to be obese too.. And kill people. (Harris and Klebold)"

For now, the priority is to focus on public health of children which is more urgent than the allegations of violence caused by games. I'm more worried about the health of the public. Once we do well, we'll talk about the violent games and its measurable impact, if any.

"At the same time the growing budget problem. Another issue at bay. Jobs cut, police hours cut, evening shifts cut, Students can't attend higher education, these happy meal sales were inadvertently helping. The bay can do better."

All it has to do is modify its happy meal to meet the requirements. It's really that simple.

If that's true Netrox, why your average Medieval serfs consumed more calories per day than the average Americans... and still stay fit? Hell, even Amish eats a lot more fats, sodium and protein than Americans and their obesity rate is relatively lower and longer-living than your typical McDonald's goers, despite that Amish are at higher risk for cardiac arrest and hypertension than the mainstream.

So, naisho is right. It's underexercising. The difference is that white-collared jobs were not typical of most people in the world. Computers, cars, television were not centric to people's lives. Nowadays, we are not working from sun up to sundown anymore.

A small correction here: it's hard to eat too much raw fruit. Now if you were to turn apples into apple pie and then add ice cream to it, the calories will add up fast. I can also think of other ways to make a simple apple load up on fat and calories.

A lot of people are capable of binging on food like nuts. Peanuts are a weakness of mine. They're very calorie dense like most nuts. Even a handful is easily worth 200 calories - especially if they're the oil roasted kind.

I cannot agree with your first statement here. If you watch any ads for diet supplements, they always say that the product should be combined with daily exercise. If you do nothing, you can get fat on 1000 calories a day. Not only that, muscle burns calories faster than fat. I am amazed at how many people want to pop a pill and stay sedentary.

The second part...if McDonald's created a carrot and broccoli Happy Meal, who would order it? They are in the business of making a profit. They offer some healthy options, but most people want the fatty foods. If they stop selling it, someone else will.

Why do we need regulations for a kids meal? There are far more harmful foods than a McD's cheeseburger. Do we regulate what parents pack into a kids school lunch? Where does it end?

Good question. While I am in favor of making it easier to get healthy food and on making sound nutritional knowledge avaliable to people , I stop at dictating what others eat.

Plus exercing helps build up muscle mass which requires more calories to sustain that muscle mass which means you burn more calories in the process.

As for fat, it's stored calories...not about muscles. One pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories worth of energy. Muscles do burn stored fat if you understand the physiological responses of how muscles utilize stored fat. No light exercise will burn fat. Muscles use the first available energy easily accessible in muscles during a light exercise and then progress to the stored carbohydrates if you notch up the exercising before moving on to burning up stored fat depending on how long/hard you exercise.

So true......And people can be thin and fat at the same time. I have seen many women that appear thin and then you touch them and it's all squish.

Then there is me who no one will mistake for small....but no squish. (well maybe my cheeks)

Wow, an elected official of a small city commented on my opinion on how ban on happy meal ignited silly controversy for nothing and that it's just a local issue, not a state or federal issue. I pointed all the silly bans and regulations in small towns. He commented, "You are so very correct Jeff. Your local elected officials such as your mayor and city council members regulate most of the ordinances you refer to." I mean, dude, shut up. Much ado for nothing. It's a simple request - make happy meal healthier and you can include a toy.
