$1,600 for electric!!!! You must live in a palace. That is more than we pay all year.

Yikes!

Reba, what did you guys do, change-out the windows and install low-e double paned filled with argon gas, install a Energy Star furnace, generally wrap your house up so tight that toasting a couple slices of bread keeps ya toasty? ;)

No, nothing special. Our house was built in 1989. We have 24 large drafty windows; we really want to replace them but it is too expensive. We have an Energy Star rated furnace/heat pump/AC unit (two years old). We keep our house warm in the winter and cool in the summer. We use a lot of electric appliances (I confess). Our house is just vinyl siding.

I guess our kilowatt hours might be cheaper. :dunno:

Look at your bill where it shows the KW per hour charge--should be something like 25 cents per.....

Last month we had a general rate increase. The current rate is:

First 800 KWH @ $0.086270
Next KWH @ $0.082210
Franchise fee 3.00% paid to the Town

So that's like 8.6 and 8.2 cents per KW hr, right? That's dirt cheap. I don't have mine handy but last I remember (Like 5 yrs ago or so, lol) it was 10 cents per KW hour.

Local electric company letter stated:

"In January, the residential customers will see their rates increase $3.00 for the minimum charge plus $13.00 for a 1,000 kWh or a total of $16.00 for a 1,000 kWh."

Hi there,

I have my electric bill average $18 to $23 dollars a month in my apt and AC in the summer season about $32 to $39 a month.

Landlord pay gas line for boiler room (water tank heater and large furances).

I am really shocked at the huge gas, oil and electric bills that you all have. Do you have huge houses, or do you live in extremely cold climates?

My house is not that big.

One master room, kitchen, dining room, living room, 1 and half bathrooms, and laundry room are on 1st floor.

And 2 bedrooms, bathroom and a playroom are on 2nd floor.

When my mom turned her gas heater on, all the heat rises to the 2nd floor to warm
up 2 bedrooms and bathroom.

The problems are the playroom where I spend all day in, is on top of the garage... That is why it is so freezing in playroom.

And plus I got a dog, and I had to let her outside every hour so she can pee.
And all that heat comes out the backdoor every time I let the dog in and out.

So oh well.

I dont have gas, but electric bill for last month was $35.00 *thud*.

But funny last couple of months in winter and summer, electric company keeps credit our electric bills like we dont have to pay them back.. so it was almost free power for 5 to 8 months.

Many times we have called the electric company about it, they said everything is right. *smh* methinks the electric company must have some kind of computer glitches... so right now it summer finally electricity bill to pay.

Downing, hi; where do you live? How well insulated is your house? How many sq feet is your house?

I live in Northern VA near the mountains. it is 3,000 sq. ft. Yep I got a big house....Not sure how well insulated my house, my friend is coming over this weekend to check the insulation and all to help me to conserve gas bef going sky rocket.

i did find a little leak/tear in the duct system/ventation whatever it is for heat...Think it could be the problem. No problem w water or elec bill just the gas itself. sigh. my friend will come this thursday to help me out because I am not good with those stuff. haha.

I am flabbergasted to see electricity bill this month, $263.00 using hot water and heat in small apartment. I called the electricity company to find out why they charged me 163 dollars for purchase supply upgrade kilowatt

They charge 7 cents per minutue when you use kilowatt :squint:

To give you an idea where your money goes for electricity, note the following:
A killowatt (KW) hour is one thousand watts of continuous electricity flow for one hour.

A 40 watt light bulb will use about a KW in about 24 hours.

Your computer will use up a KW in about 2.5 hours

A 19" color TV will use a KW in about 4 hours

Ladies, attention! LOL...your electric hair dryer uses a KW in 45 minutes!

Uh, Oh, our clothes dryers use up a KW in 15 mins!

You get the idea....just go around your house and add up all the stuff you use and get an approximation of the KW's you use in a month and check it against your bill....they should be close.

Yup, your indeedly correct.
Some electric company reads meter every other month so they estimate every other month as well that might give you wrong idea of how much you use. I always send in meter reading every month to avoid this. Works so well. Unfortunately I see increase cost per unit in gas! This year is the highest in history. I have graph to show. Usage is about the same, but the cost just shot up.

Those are nothing compare to ref and freezer, they cost fortune so are the spa. I use swamp cooler during the summer to keep elecrric cost down.

We also use firewood to heat house, it helps lower gas bill.

My last gas bill was about $345 a month which its suck but hey, I'm not the only one who gotta pay bills, you guys too... Speaking of heat and suffer, I got a joke to tell...ready? :)

A young polar bear cub approached his mother one day and asked, “Mom, am I a polar bear?”

“Of course you are,” she replied with a smile.

“OK,” said the cub, and padded off. Later, he found his dad out by the iceberg. “Dad, am I a polar bear?”

“Sure you are, son!” said his dad, wondering a bit at why his son would ask such a silly thing.

The next day, the cub asked the question again and again. “Are you and mom polar bears? You are? Well, then, does that make me a polar bear? Pure, 100% polar bear?”

Finally, his parents couldn’t stand it any longer. “Son, you’re driving us crazy with this question! You are a polar bear! Why do you keep asking?”

“Am I really your child?”
The cub looked up and confessed, “Cause I’m FUCKING FREEZING!”

Right, believe it or not, fridge uses the most electricity of all appliances!!! So, most people overlooked fridge big time. So, how to really save electricity on fridge... here is a trick that would save you bunch of electricity cost. Keep it close to full capacity! Empty fridge uses much more electricity than full fridge! That is because of mass of energy is stored in foods thus keep fridge cooler longer than air itself. Do NOT overfill the fridge because fridge needs space to circulate the cool air around the fridge.

Good point here. I was thinking of buying new ref since mine is 23 years old and use alot of electric. They keep saying newer models save more electric bills than older models? Got rid of old freezer and would like get new small one but chicken out on that one dunno how much it will raise our electric bills. Thanks for point out about not empty or too full ref otherwise it will burn more electric.

That's right! If you got too much space left over, buy 3-4 Los Angeles Times Sunday paper (each avg about 600 pages every Sunday) and stick them into the fridge!
