Friends that smoke too much Weed

In every story there is a little bit of truth, it's what makes a good story.

The real science is heavy drug use hurts you and the long term affects are serious. This is not in dispute.
that's not what we're talking about in here. it's a common sense that anything too much will kill you.. even water. we're talking about an addiction, not consumption to death.

The point at which it hurts you, however, is not so easily scientifically obtained and this is where politics plays a part. This is were it becomes an all or nothing thing. And, this all or nothing view prevents medical use as well.

Like that gun that can kill anyone, scientifically proven, and should be taken away from everyone(for everyone's protection, of course), sounds simple doesn't it. After all, science proves that those that get shot get killed.
huh? if that's the kind of argument you're using, then you've just lost a credibility.

a person's predisposition is pretty much largely depended on genetic plus environment aka "nature AND nurture" instead of "nature OR nurture". this is actually confirmed by a psychologist when I asked why I do not have any addiction problem.

Genetics is an Important Factor in Addiction
Genetic is an important factor in addiction

Genetics of Addiction | National Institute on Drug Abuse
Why do some people become addicted, while others do not? Studies of identical twins indicate that as much as half of an individual's risk of becoming addicted to nicotine, alcohol, or other drugs depends on his or her genes. Pinning down the biological basis for this risk is an important avenue of research for scientists trying to solve the problem of drug abuse.

Genetic Factors Linked to Smoking Addiction in Teens - Forbes
Why is it that some teens who try cigarettes get addicted rather quickly while others do not? Well, based on a new study with over 40 years of data, genes may play a role in this phenomenon.

Stairway to Recovery: The Role of Genetics in Addiction
Initial theories of a single "alcoholic gene" have essentially been disproven by research. We believe that multiple genes play a role in the transmission of addiction from one generation to another. It is called POLYGENIC INHERITANCE

...

Recent studies suggest that heroin addiction is even more mediated by genes than alcoholism.

If one researches families in which there's an addicted person, one will invariably find another addicted person in the family — an aunt, uncle, grandfather — sometimes with a different form of addiction — but it's GENETICS, not willpower, scruples or toilet training, that plays a vital role in determining whether one will have the disease of addiction.

Inpatient treatment — 3 days or 28 days…it's only the beginning of lifelong treatment. There is no cure for the disease of addiction…and many factors combine to tempt and drive the recovering person to relapse.

http://www.apa.org/monitor/2008/06/genes-addict.aspx
At least half of a person's susceptibility to drug addiction can be linked to genetic factors. Presenters at an April 8 congressional hearing outlined new research on the genetic basis for addiction and recommended ways to incorporate those findings into treatment. The hearing was organized by APA's Science Government Relations Office.

Lets clear a little something up. Say What Kid said people that try it are genetically disposed to it, incorrect. Vacation Guy is correct, marijuana is a very very very social drug and anyone trying it is going to do so for social reasons. Now, after they've tried it, that's when the genetic component will influence whether or not that person becomes addicted or not. Notice for a moment Jiro, the names of your links......

Stop repeating me and re-read the posts. It is not in dispute that people can have a genetic predisposition, as I posted.

The point was: The predisposition does not cause a craving for the drug. Drug use is caused by social factors. The predisposition just helps the addiction, it doesn't start it.

Anyone can quote a source and that source might be correct, but at some point that individual has to start thinking for himself. Source by itself is just quoting someone else and anyone can do that. The source needs to accompany an original thought.

Hell, I think everyone should try a little pot at some point in their life. Open up some minds, see outside the box for little while, and stop being so judge mental. :) live a little, variety is the spice if life, moderation is the key. Try a little of everything ;) maybe half the world wouldn't be stinking uptight.

But seriously, behind the mask is right, I'm betting most of you guys would be shocked by just how many people smoke weed, and people you wouldn't have thought would. Not just stereotypical old hippies toke sheesh. And not everyone who smokes it isn't addicted to it either.

If I didn't know better, I'd say you sound like Grummer :)

EDIT: Not that that would be a bad thing.

research have found that alldeaf peeps are bored and it leads them to argue about absurd one thing or another. But not killing them but It's addicting.

Not ALWAYS a social drug and doesn't ALWAYS start in a social aspect ... jus saying

a little doobie is a no-no for me. best to keep my subconscious mind locked up tight.

Haha I'm okay with that. I think it's funny though, the people so judge mental about are mostly the ones with absolutely no experience with it, or any other kinds of drugs, which to my mind makes them the absolute nonauthorities on the subject because they no frame of reference, they don't really know what they're talking about. They just repeat what they've heard or read about it. Funny thing about studies, you can pretty much do anything study and come up with the results you're looking for.

Interesting factoid, one you won't learn in health class in high school. Actually, in when I took health class in high school they taught us that pot caused birth defects. Lies, all lies. After my first visit to the ob when I was pregnant with my first child they sent me home with a bag of pamphlets and magazines. One pamphlet was a list of drugs and the effects on your pregnancy, caffiene was on there even, the only drug that had know known effects......marijuana. Yep that's right, a friend of went to an ob preggers, told the doc shed quit smoking weed but was having a hard time with cigarettes. He straight up told her he'd rather her quit smoking the butts and keep smoking weed if she could only quit one or other. Pot has an undeserved bad rep that is mainly the result of propaganda that everybody buys into.

Healthcare is conservative, it has to be. You can't uphold a, "Do no harm" oath if you are not conservative. Just sayin..

I hear what you are saying though..

Your doper friends will probably not stop for 20 years or more. As long as they can find jobs without random drug testing, they will be happy to do absolutely nothing with their lives. Turning the page on the calendar will not cause them to panic, no matter how many times they repeat it. Only when they stop and look back will they begin to regret the time they wasted being wasted.

No what they teach kids in school is a load of malarkey, but when you go to an actual doctor, and get healthcare that's when you find out that it doesn't do anything. It's just very important to realize that studies are very easily manipulated, if an anti marihuana group funds a research they will "find" the results they were looking for.

I like that :) weed though is wasted on me lmao I lost all tolerance for it. I used to smoke it, a lot of it. I tried probably every other drug out there too in my early 20s, didn't care for most of them, pot was always my favorite. But I quit when I was pregnant and never went back to it, just wasn't interested in it anymore. I have had a toke here and there over the years, but it sends me right to bed. So yep, it's wasted on me. Probably didn't help that I'd been drinking every time. See that's another thing, you can do one or the other, although if you get drunk you'll be more messed up than if you just toke, but if you do both? Stick a fork in you you're all done. They're both depressants so you're just sloppy wasted.

Wrong. People that smoke pot are genetically inclined to try other drugs. That is how they crossed the threshold from using no drugs, to using pot. It isn't a case of pot making someone want to try other things.

Been there, done that. Retired.

Feel free to reread what I said. I did not say people are genetically inclined to smoke weed. I said people that are inclined to try weed are genetically inclined to try drugs of any kind. It is in their nature to do so. They are also the type of people that are inclined to try alcohol first, ciggies, etc.

It might be a social thing to smoke weed, but the underlying factor that takes someone from smoking a bowl to injecting meth is not social.

as usual a hot topic. i don't think anyone will ever come to a consensus on this one..

regarding the original post i don't think it's that unusual at that age, and if you have concerns just speak up about it.
