so if you were the boss at Fox News... would you release his name to public?

One official who has followed the issue closely said that it could be difficult for authorities to bring legal action against the book's author because the Obama administration has itself released so much detailed information about the bin Laden raid.

Well, I'm not the "boss" of Fox News...and regardless, News is News....and the author would have been found out sooner or later....So how about pointing the finger at the Obama administration?....

Publishing such a high profile book as this and trying to keep the author "secret"??... Ridiculous....Not gonna happen.

If I revealed and posted your real name here on AD, most of you would likely not be happy about it. Some of you would not care.
Even if all you did was write some thread about an event in your life, but are keeping yourself anonymous with your screen name which some of you have done already.

It's up to the privacy policy here that protects you from moderators and administrators from revealing your real name if they were able to find out what it is.

I wonder if there is a general privacy policy standard for news reporting, but from the looks of it, if FOX was not penalized; there was probably no law for it.
It is definitely in bad taste, however they probably thought in advance of getting away with it.

um... it's very very easy for them to know who. As Reba pointed out several times, they can find out who but not civilians. The government has authority to find out. Even the press shield law can't protect them from federal government.

Fox News is the one who revealed his name to public, not Obama Administration or anybody else. Let's stick with the facts, shall we? Since Fox News is the one who exposed him, I'm asking you a hypothetical question. Would you release his name to public?

Ridiculous? but.... many authors of hot-selling books have had remained hidden until they revealed themselves at their own term.

Dr. Seuss. Harry Potter. Mark Twain. George Orwell. Stephen King. Charles Dickens. Ben Franklin.

It is a PR campaign for Mark Owen's book.

1) Mark Owen wrote this book to set the record straight.
2) The details released from the Obama campaign pissed off the SEALs
3) If the Pentagon was truly keeping Mark Owen's identity a secret, they never would have told a reporter what his real name is.
4) Obama was already giving out national security information to Hollywood movie directors. He wants a movie about the OBL raid released before November.
5) That is why this book is being released in a few days. To get the information from the guys that were there.

In other words, this book would not have been written if Obama had not released info to the public.

Ridiculous? but.... many authors of hot-selling books have had remained hidden until they revealed themselves at their own term.

Dr. Seuss. Harry Potter. Mark Twain. George Orwell. Stephen King. Charles Dickens. Ben Franklin.

All those books were not written by a NavySEAL...and not high profile...and most importantly, the authors you stated did not the write about truth about bin Laden's death....(If, the book and the author is telling the truth).....

As for your question if I would revel his "true name" to the public, I cannot honestly say....it's almost like asking me something that a good friend or family member came to be and said they shot or killed someone and I was to keep it "a secret"....I'm not a Priest or a clergyman...and I'm not the boss of Fox News...The book should have never been written or even published, the author knew what he was doing and knew the recuperations of it.... and furthermore, the government knows more about you than you know yourself....his name would have been made known, regardless if it was Fox News or any other News Media....Even the publisher Dutton, would have revealed his name if they wanted to.....That's about all I've got to say.

incorrect. otherwise why would he have a pen name?

1) Mark Owen wrote this book to set the record straight.
correct

2) The details released from the Obama campaign pissed off the SEALs
Obama campaign? You mean Obama Administration? Well I don't know which one is worse... this one or Valerie Plume scandal under Bush Administration as a retaliation to squash Ambassador's report that WMD doesn't exist and there's no proof of Iraq's involvement in 9/11.

3) If the Pentagon was truly keeping Mark Owen's identity a secret, they never would have told a reporter what his real name is.
Where did you find the fact that Pentagon told a reporter his name?

4) Obama was already giving out national security information to Hollywood movie directors. He wants a movie about the OBL raid released before November.
Incorrect. The movie has been postponed to December.

5) That is why this book is being released in a few days. To get the information from the guys that were there.
I don't follow.

In other words, this book would not have been written if Obama had not released info to the public.
The book would have been written anyway like all other war books.

that didn't really answer my question as it's full of unrelated verbose misdirections but don't bother. you pretty much showed me how uncomfortable my question is for you. what a pitiful attempt at backpedaling and doublespeak.

You wanted a "yes or no"....I gave you my answer that honestly I don't know....what more do you want?....and it was not backpedaling...or doublespeaking....I'm not the boss of Fox News....will never be the boss of Fox News....never want or even considered, asked or invited to be the boss of Fox News......so ur asking "if" I was...is a joke.

Ultimately, FOX is responsible for the decisions that they make.

Guess what? Just because "alot" of people want to know something, it doesn't mean they have the right to know something.

In this Wiki world, people might be used to and expect to have access to everything but there really isn't a right to all information.

Yes, you are correct. FOX is responsible for all its decisions and in this case made the right one. Yes, if I was head of FOX, I would reveal the guys name because in my book he commited a national crime.

As you said in your "Guess what", just because people what to know what happen on the raid does nor mean they have the right to. And as you have posted here, prior authorization to speak out is required. We all know how the publishing world works. This guy is a soldier not a writer. So he had to tell the publisher much more than got
Code:
into print. Therefore, more than several people have unauthorized access to military secrets

do you know what a hypothetical question means?

It's a very simple hypothetical question. If I were the boss of Fox News or any news outlets, I would never ever publish Mark Owen's real name. In fact, I would publish a sharp rebuke in editorial section toward any news who publicize his name. But if the name was leaked from my company, I'd fire anybody who was involved in it.

That wasn't so hard, isn't it?

Well....hip-hip-hooray!....And sis-boom-bah.....Nice you've stated ur position for your own hypothetical question....For all it's worth, my position is still undecided....maybe ask me again if I ever do become "boss of Fox News.".....don't hold your breath tho'....liable to turn blue.

Thank to god, you don't know my full name.

I agree with Jiro and Reba.

In AD, when someone reveal member's real name without their permission will result in post deletion.

The author wrote the book for money. Someone sold the author's real name to Fox News for money. Fox News announced the real name to the public for money. So it's all about money. The author knows that. If I were him, I would have someone else to write a book so that way no one would know who told the story.

All this revelation will probably put an end to whistle blowers, undercover investigations, informants, witness protection, and any future Deep Throats.

your position was actually quite clear in here. you didn't care about Mark Owen and you aren't criticizing Fox News.

He should be killed/tortured until he reveals the rest of his squad, because FoxNews is exhibiting true leadership in media coverage by publishing his name. Has nothing to do with them trying to increase their bottom line. O-Tay?

I'm so glad you stick to your gun and don't allow yourself to be bullied.

What in world are you say about bullying?

Jiro is no bullying, period and if you can't stand it so get out of debate thread.
