Formerly deaf piano teacher will play during a concert Sunday in Stillwater

I guess her life is much better than mine for sure. For your info, the miracle of modern technology doesn't make my life better...

If a newspaper announced you performing anything anywhere, I would go if I could. There need be no mention of your hearing.

Your life is your own. Why bother and compare whether if your life isn't any better than hers? If you're satisfied and happy with your own life, that should be enough. No?

I love you just as you are, Karrissa. And I know that your life is full, productive, and meaningful even if you aren't "formerly deaf."

:ty: :aw:

I tried new hearing aids but it seems not really help me but it did improve few sounds that something I never heard before. Strangely, HAs seem make a few songs clear a bit for me, not other words. I thought it is weird. At the least, some sounds I still familiar with. I just decide to wear my new HAs whenever I feel to.

I kinda of drop out my speech skills... on and off, y'know. Maybe another time, I think. I just prefer to enjoy my life, not worry too much about my hearing loss.

STFU

Karrissa isn't comparing the quality of life to the woman in the article. She is commenting on the blatant audism in a posters message.

You are a well adjusted and healthy girl. Your life will always be full of quality because you have the right attitude.

I don't compare, really. It is interesting how modern technology makes your life better while others are not. Because it is true.

On dA, a few users asked me in notes why I don't get a CI or HA if it can make my life better. I told them my reasons and already tried advanced HAs, only a little luck I have. They said it must be suck without CI or HA, then I told them that I'm doing fine and will survive without some technical stuff. Their notes ended up arguing with me because they thought it is terrible. Never mind that most people can't live without advanced technical stuff for almost everything.

To be honest, I don't get "formerly deaf"...

It's pretty easy to understand about the "formely deaf"...a great way to get people's attention and sell "papers."

About modern technology, exactly. It doesn't have to be CI or HA but technology has made much of our lives easier and more enjoyable. I love my HA. It has enhanced my quality of life because it does benefit me in a lot of ways, especially with my piano playing. So, I can see where that woman is coming from when she got her CI. As for you, you have your own life and if you're happy with it, then that should count for everything.

I remember aguring with some deaf man who went deaf as an adult and he said I had missed out on a lot as a result of my deafness and I told him I knew exactly what I was missing and it wasn't what he thought I was missing. I miss the chance to be able to talk to everyone at the dinner table as I'm the only one who's deaf.

Only for the uneducated. The educated speak up against blatantly false statements and point out the fact that it encourages the audist attitude.

Exactly. It is exploitation. Shameful. Audist. And no wonder that you see it as perfectly okay.

Like I said earlier, a demonstration of a deaf audist is now available for viewing.

"I am hearing the birds for the first time in years and years and the locusts and crickets,” Hannon said.

She's hearing things that she hasn't heard in years. She isn't "cured" but she is hearing things that she formerly was not able to. Doesn't bother me a bit that the writer used "formerly deaf." The emphasis is on function rather than the strict medical definition.

Just curious. How would you write the headline, Jillio or souggy or anyone who wants to take a stab at it? Given the demands of journalism to make a headline short, punchy and immediately understandable in summing up the story, how would you write it so as not to be "audist?"

It gives the public the wrong impression and creates more oppression against those deaf who dont have CIs. Come on...

This is true. So?

There was an article about a little boy whose CIs were stolen. He couldnt function without them so he missed a month or so of school while waiting for his replacement to arrive. With ASL, a child will never have that problem.

And mislead the public about deaf people? Nice

I remember that article well. If my CIs were stolen or missing, I'm sure I could function fine without them. Dunno about the rest of my family. They'd be upset.

Creates more oppression? How so? This is a late deafened person who finally got to hear again.

How would the regaining of her hearing mislead the public about deaf people in that article? This is a late deafened person now.

She has assisted hearing, did not regain hearing. That is where the misleading comes in play.

I cannot tell you how many times I have had people come to me telling me CI's will restore my hearing. Um, no, it doesnt.
