For those who want to practice Finger-spelling

I am aware of some deaf groups here in Toronto-from Canadian Hearing Society- over the last 20 years. I read newspapers re: the huge uproar over Cochlear Implants. As duly noted before i have one-now- and don't feel I should disconnect it and remain in total/real silence. Just learn ASL! Yeah I was actually a student in ASL at Danforth Collegiate and Northern Secondary school a few years ago-Introductory ASL- and realize the futility of trying to learn ASL without practicing with anyone-except in class. Both teachers agreed with me. At that time i had a "profound loss-85 decibels-left ear with deafness in right ear.
From reading about-"deafness" written by Harlan Lane et al- don't accept his "theories re cultural deafness"-even for Hearing persons-just know ASL. Journey into the Deaf-World does seem to articulate his thoughts! Duly noted before Harlan Lane is a Hearing person not Deaf. Is this just another exercise in Ideology? Never dull to say the least.
Not sure how many of the 38,000 members here have opinions based on THEIR experiences-similar? Especially everyone with an Cochlear Implant!

Quite sad.

You can meet deaf people while using your CI if you want.... Why be afraid?

Second.. why read so much "about the deaf world" when you don't even bother going out and experiencing it?

Take Buckets up on her offer.... Please.. before I get any more hurt.

I call BS on your quote that both your ASL teachers agreed that it would be a waste of time because I know ALL the ASL teachers in the GTA area. They are very passionate about ASL and wouldn't be caught dead stating what you said. Like PFH stated if you have such a bad taste about us, why continue associating with us? Do us a favour and cut the apron strings.

Mrs Bucket: you can assert anything you want- you weren't there. I was! This is specific to me in my specific circumstances-applies to anyone else?
I don't have a "bad taste" about the deaf- which I am- really! That will not change for the rest of my life. The ideological/ cultural suppositions is, of course a different matter. Interesting discussion in sociology- "in vs out" groups! Why read this if you disagree?

This is a general forum, dear. We can come and go whenever we want. You don't like the mood here? Don't let the door hit your derriere on the way out!

Yeah: this is "alldeaf.com" and i am deaf. I am quite aware "some" of deaf do subscribe to Harlan Lanes"s suppositions. I don't have to belong to say the Ontario Association of the Deaf/Silent Voice/Bob Rumbals Centre for the deaf to experience being DEAF. Just disconnect my Implant which I do- every time I go swimming! Real quiet! Is there moods on a computer screen? This group is not exactly the same as the other group I belong to: VampireFreaks.Com-same user name! Seems to be 1,2 Millions self-described "goths" there. Never dull! Wisdom by "wheelbarrow"!
The bulk of my comments here-so far have been-Cochlear Implants-which I have.

If you say all deaf is taking your implant off... Why do you EVEN bother talking about sign language? Why are you in here telling us that we should be using more fingerspelling... Whats your motive?

To give us sore fingers. Ya know, that expression your mother used to tell you when you scowled that your face was going to freeze that way someday? Maybe he'd like to see our fingers do the same ??

What is to be "afraid of"? Considering writing a new book-"Fingerspelling for goths". Subtle ad for my other group-VampireFreaks.Com. Hoping to get an introduction by Harlan Lane. ( Only problem-not sure if Google can find him)
One doesn't need to sign in ASL/BSL/QSL/CSL/FSL etc to experience/know- real/total deafness.
An interesting experiment in fingerspelling- the letters- CHS-surprise! no one knows what I just fingerspelled. Oh yeah-Canadian Hearing Society. Another experiment at singles dances- the ASL sign for dancing- more blank faces.

I better get my ass onto that vlog soon.

Post from hell- you are correct- reading a ton or two of books without being able to read- won't learn much. Assuming one has lots of space to store and time to look at the tons of books-hopefully not upside down-hardly matters, of course.however, if your "considered opinion" that A Journey into the Deaf-World Harlan Lane et al should not be read but one needs an ASL "interaction" from the local deaf club/group. to get the "real facts" Interesting hypothesis. Especially those that choose NOT to speak to someone who doesn't "understands" ASL. Yeah-write! It was pointed out at CHS Hearing Help classes-long time ago-not surprising that one may shift from hearing to reading to deal with their Hearing loss for " verbal input of information".
At the moment still reading the shocking SECRET INFO; Chapter 12- The Hearing Agenda 1.-to mitigate a disability and the real SHOCKER: Chapter 14- The Hearing Agenda 11- ERADICATING THE DEAF-WORLD! Amazing Harlan Lane et al would published this 1996 and the HEARING COMMUNITY apparently has NOT done anything. What is even more incredible-book in public library!!

What facts are we talking about here?

Deafness is not all about "Turning my ear off". It also is the experience. Rich one I may add.

My point all along in this thread is: If you actually went out to mingle with the deafies in the past twenty years, you would know instantly that rochester-method fingerspelling is slow and annoying.
(perhaps you havent read enough yet to find this...)

Also - I'd even venture out to say this, if you cherished being Deaf..... Starting twenty plus years ago... You wouldn't be doing the singles dances these days.
