Dreams - Have you dreamt that you could hear? (OT)

i'm able to smell and taste the words i think of in my mind.

for example, if i think about pizza, i can instantly smell and taste it.

however, i don't know if that's unique since i know quite a few people who can do this.

I dream during i cannot hear. I sign most the time. I dont think my dream are real.

no, they don't. i don't understand how braille can have textures. could you explain?

however, i do have synesthesia in the sense that i "see" days of the week, months and years as being an entity in time. (for example, wednesday is further away in space than monday, july is further away than january and the year 1980 is further away than 2009.)

For me the semantic content of many letters and words in various languages and writing systems is associated with certain colors and textures. It's another type of synesthesia. The braille D is inherently olive green. When I am reading something in Braille and my finger passes over the D, I see the color olive green in my mind, so I experience green as an inherent characteristic of the braille character D.

how do you come up with the colors for each braille character?

Hahaha, Lavendar is on drugs. Is he still? hahaha.

In my dreams, I am a bear taking over the world with my huge fiery claws!

I don't "come up" with them, so much as they just happen. It's related to the semantic content. I don't have many colors or textures associated with Braille yet since it's a relatively new alphabet for me, but to give you an example of what I mean by content-dependent, dropped D would be a different color depending on if it meant dis-, dd, or a period in a given context.

I forgot to mention that it's not each and every character. In fact most synesthetes only have associations for some letters and words, and some have stronger colors (or textures or tastes) than other ones.

That is pretty common. Most sighted people visualize whatever it is they're thinking about. Since you and I are blind, I think it makes sense we hear or taste it.

that's really interesting. i can't associate colors with braille characters because i don't know the meaning of color.

The phenomenon also occurs with letters to taste, letters to smell, and letters to texture. I also experience it with letters/words to texture and was wondering if you experienced it with any of your other senses.

no, i can't say that i have. to be honest, i've never thought about letters of the alphabet having a particular taste or scent.

Most people don't have synesthesia. I think it's about one in 20 or so. So that's perfectly normal. As a kid I always thought everyone thought that way, until I made some reference to the letter U being glassy and no one had any idea what I was talking about! <laughs>

i guess i'm one of the lucky 1 in 20 then to have synesthesia. funny how i never knew i had it until after reading one of your posts.

There is a slightly higher rate of synesthesia in people who lack one of their senses (in other words someone who is blind or deaf or has anosmia--no smell), especially if it's acquired.

is the rate even higher for people like myself who do not have 2 of their senses?

Now this is going to be very embarassing for me to reveal to you all...:giggle:

Um ok... well I had this dream last night.... it was really vivid, so vivid that when I put my hand on a round white plastic table in my dream, I could feel the texture of it.. then this guy (I think it was a guy I had a crush on but his face wasn't very clear to me in my dream.. one of these times when faces are slightly fuzzy!) came up behind me and pushed me around so quickly that my hip bumped the table, I could see out of the corner of my dream eye that the table was knocked over "clang"! I even heard the sound.
Then this guy flipped up my skirt and had his way with me lol my back was to him, he came up behind me and did it up ...ahem.. up me... I was amazed that I knew I was dreaming and yet I could feel his huge throbbing member entering me LOL oops I better take that to the Adults Only thread :D:o:o

Anyway Im just surprised because I never (well very rarely!) 'do it' in my dreams as Im always this aloof strong warrior type woman in my dreams, that never lets men near her! lol

Boy, was this the most vivid dream I had lol (and yes, I woke up alone in my bed! No man for me at the moment- split up with a country musician singer a month ago (obviously, he is hearing lol)

<confused> How is it your therapist knows? Does your therapist know from you telling her? And of course it's natural to be angry at someone who hurt you.

Sorry, I didn't explain this to you and Hear Again clearly. OK, let me put this way.. I told my therapist about my dreams and what it means to me? She listened and said I was abused by someone. After I said yes, I was abused by them.
Yes, I know that it was natural to be angry at my father, my aunt and the supervisor at the girl's dorm who hurt me. I already talked to them about this a few years ago.. (and of course, I told them how I felt about this). They all said (with tearing) how sorry they were.. and so forth. We had a long good talk. I forgave them, so, I have to move on and they have to move on as well. I hope it helps.
