Dreams - Have you dreamt that you could hear? (OT)

I can see and I can hear.

But after reading this thread yesterday and being on the forums with Hear Again and Nika a good part of the day, last night I dreamed I was wandering around in complete blackness. Never did figure out where I was or if anyone else was around.

Don't remember hearing any sounds or trying to talk.

It was different.

It's interesting to talk about your dreams, ad'ers.

My sister said that she remember that I dreamed in using my voice and even kicked her out of our bed when we were little. She was crying. Poor my sister! I woke up when I heard that she was crying real loud. She was mad at me. My parents came and decided to separate us. They had to change the guest room to her bedroom. So, I was in my big bedroom all by myself until the senior year. I moved out and live alone since I was 18.
My sister also said I still do that.
I spoke with my therapist about this.. and she said that I was abused by my father, by my aunt of my mother's brother's wife.. and by the dorm's supervisor because of this. Of course, I told them that I was SO angry at them for abusing me. They apologized me. Oh, well....

<laughs> I feel powerful, affecting your dreams and all. I can see how seeing in "black" would be a sighted person's concept of blindness, although that isn't really what blindness is (unless you're light perception and happen to be in the dark.)

<confused> How is it your therapist knows? Does your therapist know from you telling her? And of course it's natural to be angry at someone who hurt you.

i'm also curious to know how your therapist can draw this conclusion unless you didn't say something to him/her. it's perfectly natural to be angry at the people responsible for abusing you. my abuse took place 19 years ago and i'm still extremely upset at the 3 people who were responsible for causing it.

I dream in the languages I speak: English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Farsi, Mandarin Chinese, and ASL. Sometimes I dream a bit in German cause I can hold a conversation. I think in these languages during the day, so it only makes sense it translates over to my dreams. (It's very hard for me to narrow down what I'm saying to one language!) Also since learning braille, I've started "seeing" braille in my dreams. (Sort of like an image I would capture from tactile information.)

how do you see braille in your dreams? the only time braille enters the picture in my dreams is when i'm reading a braille book or am doing something else like writing on my perkins or braillenote.

that does sound scary.

as far as blackness is concerned, some totally blind people do not see black. instead, they see gray blending into shades of white or vice versa, yellow, green, blue or like one of my friends they see random numbers and letters.

as for myself, i have no idea what color i "see." since i'm unfamiliar with the meaning of black (and colors in general), i can't tell you whether or not that's what i see.

I would really like to explain colors to a blind person. It just feels to me like, I wish you could tell this color from the other. Is that even possible?

I am constantly writing in my head in the various scripts I know, one of which is braille. I do this in my daytime thoughts, so it shows up in my dreams too.

.

Some art teachers believe it is possible. They use the same concepts artists use to verbally describe colors in their work such as red = hot, blue = cool, white = cold, etc.

i don't understand. you dream entirely in braille?

unfortunately, no. some people claim that a blind person can understand colors by using descriptive words like "hot," "cold" or "warm," but they do not convey the actual meaning of color.

When I was little, I dream in sign language and even signed in my dreams (hearing verison of talking in dreams). Now if I understand people without signing, it is because of telepathy. I never hear in my dreams ever.

A friend in a wheelchair asked me the same question because she always dream that she can walk - never in wheelchair. I think she ended up in a wheelchair because of a car accident. I know she can stand on her own but not walking on her own without holding onto things.

Has anybody ever watched a movie called Mask? it starred Cher and Eric Stolz, wow what a beautiful sad heartwarming movie! I think it was based on a real life story.

Well in that movie, Eric played a young guy with an abnormal face (all disfigured) and he fell in love with a blind girl, who also fell in love with him. He showed the blind girl how to 'look' at colours, by letting her touch stuff (eg a hot potato was the colour red, because heat is red)

Is it possible for the blind to learn something like that? Im sorry, that I don't know what it's like to be blind from birth so I have no idea

i saw the movie mask and thought it was excellent. i remember the part of the movie where rocky tried to teach his girlfriend about colors. while his descriptions of using actual objects gave her an idea of color, they didn't represent meaning. a blind person will never understand the meaning of color unless they've had vision before or are able to see after being born totally blind.

No way. <laughs> Braille is way too fresh in my mind -- only learned it this summer. When I have thoughts, I often write them out in my mind's eye in various scripts (Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew, Braille, Chinese characters, etc.) And this spills over into my dreams too.

i'm the same way whenever i visualize what a word looks like. i imagine it in my mind in grade II braille.

That's cool. Do your braille characters ever have textures or smells to them? Many letters and words have textures and colors associated with them for me. This phenomenon is called synesthesia, and I've always wondered if writing things in your mind is associated with synesthesia. For example, U is a shimmering blueish color, that is glassy in texture for me.

no, they don't. i don't understand how braille can have textures. could you explain?

however, i do have synesthesia in the sense that i "see" days of the week, months and years as being an entity in time. (for example, wednesday is further away in space than monday, july is further away than january and the year 1980 is further away than 2009.)
