Dreams - Have you dreamt that you could hear? (OT)

I don't understand the part about "only for deaf people raised from residential schools." Not all of us who are fluent in ASL came from deaf/residential schoools. I didn't. I was mainstreamed, yet I'm fluent in sign language, and I am a deaf person. Very much so.

I agree with you..I have met many fluent ASL users who were mainstreamed.

i had severe-profound hearing loss for 10 years and yet i've become fluent in asl, pse and see. prelingual deafness does not define who will be proficient in asl. late-deafened adults like me can be proficient as well.

I know that not all of us, I'm talking about deaf students who grew up started in kindergarten from residential schools that they have lots of talent in amslan with no fluency. :giggle: Am I saying the right thing? Right now, I'm on drugs.:dunno:

I am hearing in my dreams.

lol so I am! My whole life has always been full of dreams, I go to bed each night looking forward to whatever dream my imagination will dredge up. I remember nearly all the dreams I've had, all the way back to when I was a young kid. Most dreams are familiar, a repeat of scenes, people (sometimes tv actors are in them too lol) so when I go back to a familiar scene, I know what's going to happen, so I try to change things each time to prevent any bad things that happen to me in my dreams.

My dreams are always weird... and sometimes I can hear 'real' conversations, however people in my dreams always understand me, as I am articulate, fluent in each language that I chose to speak (even though I don't know a particular language, I simply pretend to speak it by making up words) and also, oddly, my dreams are Technicoloured!

Some of my friends (hearing and deaf) when asked, would tell me they really can't remember their dreams as they don't really think about it, but that when they do remember their dreams, it's usually in plain colour (black white, fuzzy, etc)

However I can also be conscious sometimes that I am dreaming, and if I don't want to be in a particular nasty/bad dream situation (nightmare) I can wake myself up by closing my eyes in my dream.

In my dream I can hear even thou I am hard of hearing do wear hearing aid. But I dont hear everything in my dream just the communication. I guess.

Wow! What you wrote is exactly the same for me, except I don't think I have seen repeated scenes in my dreams. On rare occasions, I also dream about living in other countries even though I have never visited such countries.

The other weird thing about actors/actresses, is that I sometimes see them in my dreams, too... But, sometimes in my dreams, I can see myself in their bodies, yet I use my personality/mind/feelings (if that makes any sense). :)

I don't always have weird dreams, but I love them..:) In my dreams, I don't have any problems speaking/communicating with people. I don't wear hearing aid/s or glasses in my dreams. I have never dreamt about speaking in another language, and all my dreams are also coloured (not sure what Technicoloured means).

Is that like having a dream within a dream? I think this has only happened to me once, but I don't remember the details.

I seem to remember that we have another post on that somewhere about what is like to hear sounds and images in our dreams. So I think it is a :bump: It was put on by another hearing person who was curious about that too. Do we have that in the past before? :hmm:

I've had this once before, it was very funny. In my dream, I inherited a lot of cash somehow, like piles of them. I put them all next to my bed and went to bed, then I dreamed that I was going to wake up and the cash was going to disappear, and I didn't want that to happen. So I told myself, "OK, I'm just going to close my eyes because I'm damned tired. But not so I'll fall asleep so the money won't disappear and I can use it to try something out before I really wake up."

Then it poofed.

romany,

what do you mean that your dreams are "technicolored?"

I guess I mean like the big movie screen in full glorious colours.. like a rainbow. Not just normal boring tv colours lol

Omegaman, no, not like having a dream within a dream, more like.. I'm aware that this isn't real life Im experiencing, and I know all I have to do is shut my eyes hard, because I always wake up every time I do that, it can get annoying especially when Im kissing a gorgeous actor (like Vincent D'onofrio... mmmmm yummy!!) and I close my eyes in bliss... oooo big mistake, I wake up! Darn! I wish I could go back into my dream and resume the moment! lol :giggle:

Before I ever had sight, I could never see in my dreams. During my sighted years I could and now I am gradually starting to go back to being blind in my dreams. I sign a lot in my dreams too, and everyone else in my dreams konws ASL too! <laughs> But I also dream in 8 other languages which everyone else also knows in my dreams.

I also dream in tactile and auditory information. I forgot to mention that. Those are the most prominent. Even in my visual dreams it's usually only light/no light or vague colors.

nika,

do you ever float from place to place in your dreams like i do? i find that i either float, use my guide dog tigger or my cane.

by the way, my sister wants to teach me how to drive soon (because i asked her to). once she does, i wonder if i will start driving a vehicle in my dreams? a blind person behind the wheel of a car. talk about a real nightmare. <laugh>

what 8 languages do you dream in?

by the way, since i'm fluent in spanish, german and asl, i have had dreams where i've communicated in all of these languages. this is especially true of asl (or more accurately pse since i'm a pse user) once i started using tactile sign and tactile terps on a daily basis.

one of my best friends who is legally blind dreams in color as well. although she can only see large objects (but no detail), her dreams are very vivid when it comes to color.

Sometimes I float and sometimes I fly, but usually in a non-material world. I feel like I'm in some sort of other spiritual realm.

Oops, forgot to reply to the second post. I have dreamt that before, being stuck behind the wheel blind! <scary>

what 8 languages do you dream in?

I dream in the languages I speak: English, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Farsi, Mandarin Chinese, and ASL. Sometimes I dream a bit in German cause I can hold a conversation. I think in these languages during the day, so it only makes sense it translates over to my dreams. (It's very hard for me to narrow down what I'm saying to one language!) Also since learning braille, I've started "seeing" braille in my dreams. (Sort of like an image I would capture from tactile information.)
