dont know what to do anymore!

not always but I am good at sleeping at one side till I wake up eh.. But if I go bilateral, I will take them off if I decide to sleep for sure. unless I fall asleep before I do.

Boult,

I can only fall asleep with my CIs on if I'm listening to the radio. If I try to fall asleep without the radio, I end up hearing other noises (like traffic outside my bedroom window) that keep me awake. LOL!

Interesting! Right now, there are some nights I sleep with my hearing aid on because I have trouble going to sleep sometimes. I used to be a night owl....not by choice though! :giggle:

I am going to have to try that out by going to sleep with my CI on when it comes to that. Who knows, maybe I won't have trouble going to sleep and just turn on the music instead of the television! It will be interesting to find out when the time comes! :)

Blazing Sunset,

When you have your CI, let us know your experiences. :)

I've fallen alseep to the radio for many, many years (prior to having severe-profound hearing loss) so it has become old habit for me. :) Of course, I can fall asleep just as easily without my CIs on, but I prefer having talk radio playing in the background when I sleep.

One thing I *can't* fall asleep to is music. It's too overly stimulating because I end up concentrating on the music instead of relaxing and trying to fall asleep. LOL!

By the way, last night I fell asleep with my CIs on and woke up with no pain. I was really surprised because normally the area where the magnet sits is very tender due to the pressure caused by my head leaning against the pillow.

Hear Again:

Now that you mentioned it, it could be hard for me to fall asleep to music with my CI on when I get it. I have listened to music for many years myself and it soothes my soul! LOL As a matter of fact, I have music playing now. I do see that I literally wait for my songs to come on before I would really listen to it and sing along with it...heheh. Getting to the point, if I have the CI on and are able to hear the words in every song that comes on, then it could be hard for me to fall asleep. I will have to wait and see what happens and I will be sure to let you and everyone know of my newfound experiences.

As for you falling asleep with your CIs on and not having any pain, maybe it was because you were using the right pillow? I could be wrong, but I wonder if pillows could be a reason for some people to experience pain, like the stiffness of a pillow might make it somewhat sore? The more softer a pillow is, the better it would be? Of course, everyone is diverse, and it was just a thought I had thought of. :) What about the rest of you CI-users?

What about the rest of you CI-users?

I much prefer falling asleep without my CI on. I'm not used to hearing when sleeping and never have been.

As for sleeping all night with a CI on, I haven't tried it so I can't say how it would feel exactly but I can take a cue from one of my infrequent naps. I wouldn't do well as it would be a little bit uncomfortable. It is not so much the magnet part but the BTE part and the pressure over time.

Blazing Sunset,

I never thought that the type of pillow I'm using might have something to do with the pain I experience. Thank you for suggesting that. :) I prefer to use very soft pillows and sleep with 2 pillows instead of one to avoid neck pain.

Another CI user I know uses a foam pillow which molds and shapes itself according to the position she lies in. She says it's very comfortable and prefers to use that over other kinds of pillows. I've never used a foam pillow myself, but might give it a try.

sr171soars,

I also experience pain due to the pressure of my processors resting on my ears. This is more of a problem with the Freedom than the 3G due to the larger size of the Freedom.

I found out what "pills" are sposet to help my tinnitus...there just herbal medicines!...My mom thinks that since my ent told her they would maybe help that i HAVE to take them...the "no cure" for tinnitus or no "helping" pills for tinnitus hasn't clicked for her yet i guess...so i still haven't been sleeping well..Two nights i had to take sleeping pills cuz i couldnt go to work exhausted...I cant sleep with music on or then ill start dancing around lol. but i sleep with wave noises, and that use to work pretty well until recently that my tinnitus went from bad to worse..i also have bilateral tinnitus and it sucks arse!

Alicia,

I also have bilateral tinnitus, so I can emphasize. Have you tried falling asleep to talk radio? I'm like you and can't fall asleep to music. It's too overly stimulating and I end up paying more attention to the music instead of trying to fall asleep. LOL!

On nights when my tinnitus is very loud, my only option is to take Ambien CR.

My doctors wont give me any prescription sleeping pills to take just in case, because im not over 18...*i turn 18 in 2.5 months*...

That's a good precaution for them to take. I know that doesn't really help you, but it's probably best since people react to sleep medication differently. Many types of sleep medication are quite potent and because of that, some people have an adverse reaction to them. In some cases, people can also become addicted.

I hope the tinnitus medication you're taking brings some relief! :)

I hear 5 to 7 sounds of tinnitus. I usually wear my hearing aid at my bedtime and in a quiet environment. During my bedtime, I have an empty sturdy box right next to me .. I often tap the box with my fingers of my left hand (like a playing a drum) -- I know it sounds stupid but no choice. I call it a "Toy Box" or even a Boxie Doll! Will be getting a neckloop wire soon. I don't want to turn very loud at my apartment otherwise my neighors will hear it. My hearing loss is profound. I don't hear well with my hearing aid on either because the tinnitus sounds run very high. Sigh .. sucks huh? I will be loooking for a new CD player or radio ... la la la

You're welcome for the suggestion. I have been tempted to try out the foam pillows myself too. After the CI surgery, I am going to see what I can and cannot do with the pillows I currently have first. Thanks for mentioning this! :)

When my tinnitus is extremely loud, I'll take Ambien CR and fall asleep with my CIs on listening to talk radio. It's the only way I can fall asleep without being bothered by the tinnitus.

I bought myself a new CD/MP3 player shortly after my first CI was activated. I use it constantly and it goes everywhere I go! I also bought a small handheld radio that I keep in my fanny pack. I love being able to listen to the radio or a CD when I have downtime at school, am riding the bus or waiting for a cab. :)

fm system for sleep?

Hey do you think if i hooked my fm system to my ipod and put it low that i could maybe fall asleep better or even just live the mic on cuz ill hear other noises and that mite help me fall asleep?i have a phonak edulink btw..if that helps or not ?i dunno lol

Alicia,

Some people can't fall asleep without having something on in the background whether it's a TV, radio, etc.

When I lost more hearing in my right ear, I used my Comtek FM system with direct audio input so that I could hear environmental sounds better than I could with my HAs alone.

Why don't you give it a try tonight and let us know how it works out?

By the way, yesterday I had the opportunity to see an iPod for the first time. I couldn't believe how small it was! Now I'm thinking about purchasing one for myself! :)

Lost For Help

Hello to All,
I just joined this evening. It is amazing to listen to all of you. You are so smart in your wording! I have a lot to learn. I have been hoping to speak to someone that has been a hearing person as an adult as doctors want me to have a CI and I am not sure about it. I have worn a HA for 6 years . the last two years were awful as I wore a Phonak that was fantastic...could hear TV, phone etc but for only two weeks! Then they programed it on other two programs and it never worked right after that. I went back and forth about every two weeks as their policy was once it was fixed, you retried it for 2 weeks. Well the two years went w/o it ever working like the very first two weeks and now it is dead and warranty out. The first HA was not nearly as good for me but I wore it for four years and they told me it was not strong enough. Well, for the past month I have gone back to that old one and done ok except that it cracked open from age and I have to push it together each morning!
You are all so well versed and wonderfully impressive. I have never spoken to a prehearing CI....only one deaf at birth teen and she has had wonderful and outstanding results. Thank you so much for your time in reading this.

Off-topic...

Lucia,

Forgive my stupidity, but how does the iPod nano differ from an iPod? My niece has an iPod shuffle, but other than that, I don't know how it differs from the iPod nano. Does the nano have more capabilities than a "standard" iPod? (I'm as ignorant as they come in regards to iPods. LOL!)

Tricia,

Welcome to AD! :) I hope you're finding the information that has been presented here helpful to you! If you have any specific questions about CIs, we would be more than happy to answer them.

If you don't mind my asking, do you know what the extent of your hearing loss is (i.e. mild, moderate, severe, profound)?

I can relate to your frustration about getting HAs repaired to no avail. I had a pair of digital Oticons that needed frequent repairs and for whatever reason, they just didn't seem to work out well for me so I gave up on them and went back to using my analogs.

If you are interested in talking to preligually deaf CI users, send me a PM. I have several people I can put you in touch with. :)
