Does profanity make you look less intelligent?

Yes I do swear but I don't use swearing word on every other word in a sentence. IMO - it's not the use of profanity that makes a person less intelligent to me but the type of conversation talked by same person on daily basis. It makes me uncomfortable.

Jolie,

Maria answered pretty good and, since there are quite a number of college educated people on alldeaf, allow me to elaborate what most of us feel. You see, if someone came up to me screaming profanities, wanting something or a complaint, they would be asked to tone it down. I'd help them, but if I needed to repeat to limit the profanities, their chances for me helping them speedily are greatly reduced. If talking on the phone, I automatically drop the call by hitting the drop button. Doing so, they never heard the click of the receiver and yes, I have done it a few times. Talk to me intelligently or don't talk at all, as I don't have all day to decifer what you're trying to tell me through all the profanities.

Gruber may swear all he wants, but in the end, his phone call just got dropped. He can claim First Amendment all he wants to, I don't have to put up with the language and there is no law that says I have to.

Yeah, I know what you mean by that. I was only asking or making a point for some people who are socially awkward. Some of the time, they feel they need the resort to use profanities to convey and/or to be able to express their emotions. Of course, it does not mean that most of us are like that. It takes one to know how to rein or to maintain it rather than letting it go out of proportion. :)

Really, It doesn't matter if most of us are college-educated or not, It takes a fine line to know the difference between it than comparing it to apples and oranges.

To me, too much profanity makes a grown man/woman look more like a juvenile. I have cut back a lot on profanity and do not use it as much as I used to.

Yep its make me turn off if person talk too much with swear words :P

I talk like a truck driver with my friends. But generally I keep my profanities to a minimum as much as possible in the workplace or in a public place. However, I use profanities for either when Im upset about something or for an exaggerated comical effect.

Such as:
Shel90's "Lucky bitch!"
or
Friend: "Oh hey, I forgot to bring the toothpicks."
Me: "Omg WTF noob?!"

Although, Jillio is right about someone over using profanities being socially awkward. This guy I know used the f word an excessive amount, in NORMAL conversation. "I was watching the f tv last night, and ya know the f'in show Lost? Yea f man, its a f'in good show." It just comes out strange rather than evidence of low intelligence.

I compare a potty talker to a whiner.

No one likes a whiner. Once they whine on and on, it's repetitive and eventually the whiner is never taken seriously.

Take that whiner as a potty-talker. You'll never be taken seriously if you're a potty-talker yet a very beautiful person inside.

Such an oxymoron, eh?

No. If a person is "beautiful inside" they wouldn't use profanity. Even if the woman or man is drop dead gorgeous, they're not once they open their trap and remove all doubt.

Beautifully said :)

Constant cursing is a sign of really dumb people. Generally they will be truck drivers, trailor trash, or inbreeds. Or people who think cursing is cool and funny, also very dumb.

I totally agree!

Humanity is rather ugly at times. Got a problem with that? :P

People who use profanity don't impress me.

Itry to avoid conversations where profanity is used. I try to avoid TV programs and DVD movies that have profanity. I never use profanity myself.

It's too bad people can't express themselves without resorting to profanity. :(

I agree.

Since there is a general agreement that profanity makes one look bad, why are we seeing it a lot on AD lately--especially today???

I never curse in public. Especially at school or at work. Only around those I feel really comfortable around, and it's always used in a joking manner and sparingly at that.

Lots of cussing here on AD today?

How about if someone flipin a bird at ya..
is that same as cussing? LOL!
To me it does, its like a sign language
among the hearing people..heh.
I was taking my best friend to her eye doctor's
appt, when this creep was pulling out of exit
and i guess he thought i was supposed to slow
down or something for his miserable azz, so he
zipped around to my side and gave me a royal
"finger" for the whole world to see since he was
in a convertible!! GEEEEZZZ!
my best friend just cracked up as i was really
blowin my horn at him....lol!
What a creeep!

My answer to the OP...

It gets annoying when I think the person is cussing to make her/himself look cool or tries to fit in with a certain group.
That's when the person looks like an idiot.

I'm tempted to tell that person to grow up already!!!

I am guilty as the next person of swearing, especially when I'm really angry about something. However what we say and HOW we say it is a reflection of ourselves.

When someone used offensive sex language to everyday conversation, I picture them as trailer trash with a potty mouth. It's like farting in public on purpose and laugh about it , that's how trashy it is.

I understand some profane language is an accident like getting mad about something. But still, you can use some self control.
