Does organic food turn people into jerks?

Her doctor hasn't yet convinced her?

It's like an alcoholic; they have to be ready to make the changes. Until then, they will either get defensive or ignore your advice.

When she seems ready, then you could offer to share tips and recipes with her.

Just my opinion.

I don't know if she had listened to him or not. She doesn't talk much about it at all. She had a surgery last year, and she seems not to be concerned about it. She still goes out with her husband. Oh, gosh. Her husband is obese. He can walk around, but he sort of limps right and left, because he has a huge belly. The problem is she can be persistent, so I really don't think she is interested in changing her diet nor her husband's diet. I do feel sad for them, to be honest with you. I have been watching her eating lots of breads, pasta, very heavy tomatoes, and anything brown and yellow. I haven't seen her eating green stuff lately. I am not the only one who gave her a few healthy recipes a while ago, but she just is not interested in using them.

Until someone is motivated, there's not much you can do. Just be there ready for her when she's ready to make a change.

I fear that by the time when she's ready, it's already too late.

so leave the bag in your car

The Welsh Assembly Government recently introduced a mandatory 5p charge per plastic shopping bag, to encourage people to cut down. Most people bought the bigger 'bag for life' which gets replaced when its damaged, stuck them in the trunk of the car and forgot about it.

Some folks, however, refused to pay for bags and were actually stealing the shopping baskets to carry their stuff home in, or at least taking them out to the car to put their stuff away and then just leaving them in the parking lot!

Going to England now is strange because they don't have the charge yet and being given as many bags as you like for free feels odd. A cashier here told me that she's had a few English customers who weren't aware of the charge and got mad - in fact, she took the whole first week of the charge as her vacation so she wouldn't have to deal with it.

Never had any problems bringing another store's bags in with me.

Here in Southern Illinois (USA) I use regular supermarkets that do sell cloth bags and also have plastic and paper bags free. I take the paper ones on purpose to pass on to the local food pantry as they have found they can put more in them without breakage than in reused plastic ones.

I have all kinds of reusable bags in the trunk of my car. When I take them to my WalMart, I have been asked to not bring them back. (The ones I took in had WalMart's name on them). At Whole Foods, if I bring my own bag, they ask if I want the 10 cent bag fee refunded or donated to their charity of the month. I always donate it. I am at Whole Foods twice a month. Produce market, weekly and WalMart 2-4 times a week. Also a few other grocery stores and they are happy when I bring in my bags even if it has a different store name on it.

reusable bags needs to washed or they will get dirty inside.

Walmart doesn't let you use your own bags? Makes you take more of their plastic ones?

I have cloth ones that I bought many years ago at the pet store, as a fund raiser for animal rescue. Have about 10 or so of them. Good sizes. Take them whenever I go grocery shopping. :P Always in my trunk. It took some time to build the habit to remember to get them out of the trunk, but now it's automatic. :)

Well, eating a certain way, a lifetstyle, cultural or how we are raised, is a very powerful force. And it's not easy to make drastic changes. I fight that myself and try to eat healthy, low fat, lots of veggies & fruit, etc. But the siren call of salty snacks, high sugar desserts/treats, etc., is so implanted it is really hard. Even with health issues and advice from doctors. :naughty: We have been off the fast food junket for years now, which was a really hard thing, too, being socialized as to the convenience, etc. And now it's even harder, as we age and don't want to be standing in kitchen doing more involved cooking preparations. Energy just isn't there. But we resist frozen meals for the same reason we resist fast food -- too high salt and/or high fat -- and really not healthy. We don't have serious allergies to grains, etc., so we are fortunate there. We are not diabetic nor do we have high cholesterol, so we are managing. :P But it took a few years to really change from how we were raised, with the conditioned ideas of what constitutes a healthy meal, the portions, salt/sugar, etc.

Actually, Michelle Obama's "organic" garden was ruined. The soil had been tested indicating high levels of lead from toxic fertilizer. It is not safe to grow them ever again. Next time, always test soils first, before you grow vegetables and fruits or not. Unfortunately, it is common.

WOW! :eek3: Didn't know that. Would never occur to me to pay to have our soil tested if we decided to garden (we don't; not enough room or large enough area, with enough sunlight). I doubt anyone we know has their soil tested and we eat what surplus our gardening friends share with us and we are just grateful. Just not something that would occur to us, soil testing...

Oh, for goodness sakes! Sorry, but if I have to go through all that extra effort, forget about bringing my own bags! Not store in the trunk?! Oh, so much paranoia out there. Just like the overuse of hand sanitizers and disinfectants that can actually make us *sicker* because we can't resist any germs any more. Sometimes I wonder; I really wonder about the common sense of all that. :squint: Each to his/her own, I guess...:cool2:

Seriously? I have never heard of anything like this before. Why did WalMart ask you not to bring them back? I usually carry a few reusable bags with "Sprouts" label on it to WalMart, and I was never asked about it.

My bags are all the cloth ones. I am very particular what goes in them. I also have 3 insulated bags for cold and frozen stuff and then there are the 3 large net type bags for my produce. All the cloth ones go into the washer monthly. The freezer and net bags, get cleaned weekly.

My local WalMart could care less. They don't even sell the reusable bags. If I went to one of the other 25 WalMart stores within 20 miles, I would have no problem. This store is one of the only ones that has some of my non-dairy stuff and is only 3 miles from home. The comments from the cashiers is "They don't fit our carousel for bags and they are just too bulky". Last time I was there, I had my own bags, and as they bagged them, I dumped them out and rebagged into my own bags.

Our Walmarts sell the reusable bags.

After you dumped your things out and rebagged, what happened to the plastic bags? Did the store reuse them?

It is important to keep raw meats from being bagged with other foods. Those bags would have to be washed in hot water each time. Of course, chemical purchases and food items have to be kept in separate bags. I guess color coding is good for that.

My step daughter is organic fanatic and animal right and typically she is a jerk <grin>, it's like when we (my wife and I) was hunting for car and we tried to look for cloth type seat and most of them don't have 11 ways (or something like that) seat adjustments and other feature and we found perfect car for her but it only come in leather seat..then my wife said.."Sneakernet, you know Patty (made up name) will refuse to ride in this car because it has leather in it!" So, I told her that this is the only car that you all wanted, she said yeah... who care what she will says. So, we finally brought it.
Then one day, we all decided to go out for dinner and she got in and she said it out loud..."It smell like dead animals in this car!!" then she put up with it cuz she doesn't want to ride separate car... jeesh...
And she buy all the organic food separately from our food, since we have second fridge.
Then one day, I hate moles in our yard and was hunting down for moles, I have a sharp pointy stick and brought my dog with me (my other one is Austrailian Sheppard mixed) and he's well trained to sniff out moles underground. I made him to sniff around where there a mound like path. Patty saw me and my dog outside, she ran out and screamed at me "No!! DON"T DO THAT!! Animal murder!!" (I face palmed)....

So, call that a jerk??

WalMart just took the plastic bags and threw them out since the store we go to doesn't have a recycle bin for their plastic bags. Luckily, my two plastic freezer bags are labeled and one is for meat and the other for anything else. They get bleached after a grocery run.

I do not use hand sanitizers or anti bacterial soaps . Hey , if you want to put your food into a dirty bag that is your business.

What if someone brings a cloth bag that has salmonella from raw meat drippings, and sets it on the counter bagging area, then your raw produce in a mesh bag touches that spot?

Our Walmarts have recycling bins.

You didn't want to keep them? They make good wastebasket liners and dog poop bags. We use them for lots of nasty clean ups.

Just become Vegan... that should solve the problems.

We reuse bags sometimes. I often shop at a Save-a-Lot or Aldi's, and they aren't organic or upscale, and you have to bring your own bag, or buy one, or use the boxes on the shelves.

Supermarkets here keep little plastic bags on the checkout and will wrap your raw meat in them to keep any drippings from touching your other stuff.
