Does CI person need interpreter?

Our students must take courses in both American and World History but there are no courses or inordinate amount of time spent on Irish culture, Catholic culture, Jewish culture, German culture, Black culture, Hispanic culture etc.

Of course not. An inodrdinate amount of the time is spent on majority culture. A course does not need to have "Culture" in its title to be teaching cultural values.. In fact, it very rarely does. Cuture is transmitted more implicitly than explicitly.

God help the late bloomers in your program!

I dont make those decisions...I am a teacher and my job is to teach using the curriculm adopted from the public school programs not teach speech nor oral skills.

The history taught in public schools does not include the numerous contributions made by any minority group in this country. /QUOTE]

I cannot speak to your hs or your state but I can tell you your statement is categorically not true about the social studies curriculum in New York state. Contributions by various minority groups are indeed taught and a part of the curriculum.

I agree with you that every state has different requirements from the curriculm.

Yea, yea, not my job man, I'm just following orders. I read you loud and clear.

I think that is worse ...no language euates to no literacy skills.

Exactly. Has absolutely nothing to do with speech skills, but with the ability to use the language fluently. Post #219, I think it was, of Does a CI Student need a Terp? illustrates that despite improved speech skills, CI students were still testing below their hearing peers on numerous tasks designed to assess literacy across several domains. And those results can be directly tied to langauge dperivation.

Yea...my goal is to get those kids to develop high literacy skills, mathematical concepts, and understanding of the world around them. That's my primary goal for these kids.

If that makes me a bad person or teacher that I dont have training in speech therapy or skills, then so be it.

So students in New York State, in all public schools, are taught Black History, Deaf History, Hebrew History, and the history of all of the other contributions made my ethnic and cultural minorities in this country. Accurately, and with equal value? Are NYstate public school systems teaching about, for instance, Dummy Hoy? since you are a baseball fan?

Are they taught accurate Native American history? Accurately, and with equal value? Are NYstate public school systems teaching about, for instance, Dummy Hoy? since you are a baseball fan? Do they teach that it was actually the Gaulladet football team that invented that well used tool in football known as the huddle? These, to be sure are minor accomplisments compared to some that have been made by ethnic and cultural minorities. But I thought I would appeal to your fondness to reducing things to sports analogies.

When I was in high school, I had no clue that the huddle was invented by the Gallaudet football team and I am sure my hearing peers especially the ones on the football team didnt know that either! Would have been nice if that was a part of our curriculm so hearing people can get exposure and understanding of Deaf history. It definitely would have be NICE for me cuz I got lesson about what hearing people did to change mankind but NOTHING about deaf people. Not even Helen Keller was brought up!!! I learned about her thru reading on my own. Geez!

Actually, shel, speech classes are considered to be an adjunct service, not part of the curriculum. If a parent wants additional speech therapy for their child, it is incumbent upon them to seek it out. In no school, mainstream, deaf, or otherwise, is speech therapy a part of the curriculum. We do not send our children to school to teach them to speak. We send them to school to become literate.

Yep....if we are going to mainstream deaf students by the busload, why are we not adapting to their needs. It would benefit both hearing students and deaf students alike in the mainstream. The hearing peers would do well to learn a bit about their deaf classmates.

yea, would have made my life easier somewhat if I felt pride about people who are like me and educate my hearing peers who constantly picked on me or rejected me simply cuz of my deafness. Those kids in the BiBi programs are so much better off than I was cuz they have such great self-esteem about themselves.

Another bonus. That, plus no need for a terp, going back to the OP.

Right, at the public schools, the students are not learning Math, English, Social Studies, and Science simply on the basis of learning how to speak. LOL!

Yes, because they are being pulled out of instructional time to do speech therapy as an adjunct service.

People or kids whom have C.I.'s have just as much "rights" just like any other deaf and hoh, and deaf-blind to have an interpreters for any reasons. Everybody is different and no one is expected to be perfect.

Correct.
