I voted yes. If there happens to be a cure for deafness (due to private funding), I would support it.
I also do believe that it would further oppress deaf people. This is unfortunate, but this is how life is when you don't fit in with the majority, especially when changes come from technology improvements.
Examples of people against the majority:
- A man who loves to read the newspapers is pissed off that his favorite publication is becoming paperless and will appear online only. He needs to buy a computer in order to get his news. (Also applies for those who have analog TV and must go digital.)
- A woman who decides not to fix her daughter's cleft lip because that's how nature intended it. Doctors and other people will give her a lot of grief for this decision. (Also, the choice not to vaccinate their child.)
- The Amish constantly dealing with the newer generation getting enticed by all the new technology and leaving the family/culture.
However, I highly doubt a cure for deafness will eradicate the Deaf culture. The Industrial revolution was around the 18th century and Amish is still around, aren't they?
