If one of us died, life insurance goes to one of spouses or to children if both of us died before we are on the pension/retirement.

My hubby & I join life insurance accord Bank because of loan for house. Bank want to see that we have life insurance before they can give us loan for buy the land and built house. Without life insurance, the Bank won´t give us the loan for house. We joined life insurance accord the recommendation of the Bank and 7 years later then we start family so we add our boys in life insurance... If we are still alive until 2018 then we will get money from life insurance. If one of us died before 2018 then one of us get money from life insurance. Ha, ha. How much trade in do you think I can get for a '95 Cherokee?

Car payments would still cost more than gas savings, so it's not worth it.

Don´t forget most-expensive repair bills for an old cars ... :P

I haven't had any repair bills that cost more than getting a new car. My total repairs and gas bills are still lower than any gas savings I would get with a new car. Some day I might need to get a new car but as long as my Jeep is running OK, why should I spend extra money?

Well I live in inner core of the city of Vancouver, Washington where there's the best public transportation available, but people still hate it and prefer to have a car. I guess some of people are just whiny spoiled and doesn't care about the enviroments and others..

Yeah... Think of "What's point if it's just a green?" quote.

That's an exactly point!!!

Yes, my hubby & I often say the exact same as you "Why should I spend extra money?" when everyone tried to convince us to rid of our old cars for years until our both cars 20 years old dead BMW replaced as one year old Opel Corsa last year and 17 years old dead VW Golf was replaced as one year old Mercedes-Benz A150 last February 2008. We were shock that gasoline expenses are 4 to 5 times profit than we used our gasonline on old cars before... :eek3: and also very low car tax and very low repair cost as well... Before we use old cars, gasoline was running out within 2 to 3 weeks time... Got both new cars - gasoline running out 6 to 7 weeks... After that we decided to exchange our car every two years to pay few thousand EURO instead of leave our cars to old and dead with profit loss... because nobody want old and dead cars. No profit for us... We learn our lesson...

If I buy a new car, my annual personal property tax would make a big increase because it's based on the value of the car. Right now, tax on my old Cherokee is very low. Also, if I buy a new car, the insurance premium will make a big increase.

Your gas costs more than my gas, so you save more on gas expense. I don't spend so much on gas, so my savings would be smaller.

I don't have car payments now; why should I want to start paying monthly for a new car? It doesn't make sense.

If it gets to the point where my car totally dies, or needs a major repair, then it might be worth buying another car. But it's not worth it now.

:gpost: exactly. same here. I have spent probably total $5,000 over 6 years on repair bills alone. My car is 1999 Saab with 176,000 miles. It's still good even though it's falling apart a bit. My car payment for it was done a few years ago and my car insurance is dirt cheap and it has decent gas mileage. No need to get rid of it and buy a new car now. why slave your life away for a new car when you can spend that money on something else?

Because of this - I can afford to buy a decent motorcycle soon and because of this - I saved a lot of money.

A Saab? :pissed: It runs . . . Still . . . a Saab? :pissed:

I would have invested in a Honda . . . whoops!

That's my goal with my 2003 SUV...I have a year and half before it is paid off. My hubby suggested to get it refinanced..why? I am almost done paying for it so why refinance it to have 5 more year of car payments? Ph plueeesseee! I hope to keep it for another 10 years and have 8 years of no damn car payments..it works great, it has a sunroof, 6 CD player changer, heated controlled seats, ...IT IS the luxury edition so why shud I refinance or get a new SUV?? It works great and it is comfortable..so what if it is old and outdated???

 Why paying monthly or refinanced for a new car for ? Did you know that you have to pay extra interest for monthly payment or refinanced for that car?

We put money in saving book monthly and consider it as "monthly payment" for long years for necassary. We receive extra interest from bank saving book... We know that we will need replace for our old cars that's why we have our money in saving book for long years since we first married as "monthly payment"... It's not just replace for car but something necassary for our house... like solar panels because we know our 20 years old oil heater burnt (furnace) will die within few years later, etc. If we need something then withdraw money from saving book to pay off than monthly payment or re-financed with interest to car companies.

If we want to exhange our cars for one year old cars within few years later then it's good chance for us to pay very few thousands EURO to get one year old car from saving bank than re-financed with interest.

Interesting... I can understand your point and can see that our system is very different. You pay property tax for house and car together in America. I pay $250 property tax for house/property per annual and $78 (50% discount due disability card for tax car only) for car tax per annual (depend on how old and size of car is.)

Repair old cars, car tax and insurance are expensive here in Germany due bad enviornment.

MOT is the UK's "Ministry of Transportation" which is the same as TUV in Germany. The from 2 years old cars are required to be inspected by the TUV every year. Europe is very strict about maintenance and inspection of cars registered and driven throughout the countries. Cars with rust are not allowed on the road until it is repaired.

It explains better in this link
Driving in Germany - German Highway Code - Low Emission Zones - Speed Limits - Winter Tyres and much more.

Before buy both cars, our old cars were being inspected every year - they required to be repair - we do what TUV require which cost us a lot of money... and extra... $470 road tax on 20 years old BMW and $240 on 17 years old VW Golf (50% discount for disablity car per a car). Pay road tax for old cars are very expensive accord bad environment. We paid $300 more car insurance for "third party vehicle insurance" for old cars than full coverage insurance for new cars due how many years old vehicles... $ 78 road tax for opel corsa and $ 90 for mecerdes-benz A150 per annual. Gasonline expenses on old cars got a lot of money than new cars.

Germany focus on good environment that's why we get tax and insurance for vehicle as a "praise"...

As what you said that you don't spend gas much but I thought you as an interpreter use a car everyday? To my knowledge that Cherokee/SUV drink gas a lot than other cars that's why Cherokee/SUV are quite uncommon in Germany. Yes, we agree that Cherokee/SUV look beautiful but we see after how much gas per mile they use... which is mainly important than worry how car look... Yes I use a car everyday that's why we look for how much gas per mile before buy them.

I cannot understand why we should have monthly payment with interest for that car... To me :nono: - I prefer to use money as "monthly payment" to bank saving book with interest than pay interest with monthly payment to car companies. We do that for many years for necassary... we only pay what we need... We know already for 5 or 6 years ago that our cars are old and need to be replacement... until one of both cars died last year and other one died last February...

I want to ask one more question about property tax. What if any people don't own the house but just rent an apartment? Would the houseowner or social housing raise their tenants' property tax because of new car?

Personal property tax is not the same as tax for a house. They are completely separate and different. They are not connected.

Personal property tax is for vehicles and boats. The person who owns the vehicle of boat pays the tax.

Homeowners pay taxes for their houses.

People who rent houses or apartments don't pay homeowner taxes. The person who actually owns the building pays the tax.

I'm not sure what you mean by "social housing"; do you mean government subsidized housing for poor people, like "Section 8" housing?
