Deafies: your opinions, please!

I definitely do not think that you talk openly about your bipolar for attention Hear Again. I think your intentions come across pretty clearly, mainly for awareness and education as you mentioned.

thank you nika. i also think it's a good thing that i was open about my bipolar because of my episodes over the past 2 days. thanks to everyone knowing about my illness, many ad'ers were kind enough to ask me how i was doing and expressed concern when i was experiencing a break and my posts were garbled and nonsensical.

I may be confused. she may have mentioned it in PM with me... or not. Either way... now you know. skilled specialists know what to do if they have a suspicion and it takes a simple questioning to find out for sure. and you should know - Dr. House is infamous for it :laugh2:

"Everybody lies"

:giggle: yup

dr. house doubts everyone. :laugh2:

that's true. jillio is very perceptive and would catch onto that in an instant.

yes and that's the kind of expert you want to treat your condition. Most are not. They simply write down what you're feeling/complaining and then write out prescription and then show you a door within 10 min.

:mad2:

dr. house is a television show about a dr. who diagnoses very rare and hard to treat illnesses.

and the best part is when he has to do E.R. rotation. that's when he always caught the liars.

Speaking of House MD, I have a great site to share with you guys:
Medical Reviews of House

It's like my House reference bible. Everytime I re-finish (I'm 100% caught up on house) a previous episode or see a new one, I look at this guy's site - he's a real MD for many years that likes to watch House - and see what he says about the diagnosis, if it's real or if its fake and what would a real doctor/treatment do.

oh you're talking about symptoms. yes it is very easy to fake the symptoms to get what you want - usually some attentions and drugs. but I was referring to questionings performed by an expert like psychiatrist or specialist.

Many people with a true Bipolar diagnosis would often NOT realize they may be Bipolar or even that there is something wrong with them on their own. They often do not realize their own symptoms. It usually takes other people to notice symptoms in an undiagnosed Bipolar person and bring it to that person's attention, or sometimes the undiagnosed Bipolar person would end up doing something during a manic phase that would cause them to be hospitalized, often leading to an official diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder.

this is true lucia. when i was diagnosed as bipolar in 2006, it was after i experienced a severe manic/psychotic episode. all the while i kept denying anything was wrong with me and it took 6 people to literally drag me into the hospital for treatment. it wasn't pretty, let me tell you.

another thing about people who have true bipolar is that they oftentimes do not admit when they are manic. many times i don't even realize when i am until my therapist brings it to my attention.

That is very true. I will say that I knew *something* was wrong but I didn't know what until I was diagnosed two years ago. When I found out, I was completely FLOORED because my symptoms weren't "classic". I didn't know that bipolar disorder has different subtypes or that each person with the disorder manifests symptoms in slightly different ways. I thought it was one illness with a set of exact symptoms that each person displayed in exactly the same way, and I was WRONG.
