Deafies: your opinions, please!

It's very easy, Nika, especially over a computer. Like someone (I think Lucia?) just said.... All it takes is someone who knows how to google and a good working knowledge of illnesses and they can fake just about anything.

if you recall previously - Jillio mentioned that trained psychiatrist/doctors are trained to detect the liar by performing a simple integration trick.

easy read to read but hard to fake it in real life... unless you had PLENTY of experience with it.

Reading about it and becoming super knowledgeable about it doesn't make it easy to fake. It's hard to fake being angry or happy from one minute to the next if that's not what you're actually feeling. Even with plenty of experience, it is just hard to fake in and of itself.

Plus faking over the Internet vs. faking in person are two completely different ball games. On the Internet you have more time to calculate your reactions and replies than you do in person.

well i don't mean to disagree with you (and no, i'm not manic or am trying to start an argument -- i'm calm. smile.) but it isn't that hard to fake bipolar. anyone can display "symptoms" of exciteability (mania), increased energy, restlessness (someone can fake this by constantly wringing their hands or rocking back and forth in a chair during a psychiatric consultation) and anger/irritability (which can also be faked). usually though a perceptive psychiatrist will be able to spot "symptoms" especially if a client's presentation is inconsistent every time they go for a med check-up. (one red flag of bipolar malingerers is when they say they are manic during the winter months. most people with bipolar are depressed during the winter and manic during the spring and summer -- or depressed at the end of summer).

oh you're talking about symptoms. yes it is very easy to fake the symptoms to get what you want - usually some attentions and drugs. but I was referring to questionings performed by an expert like psychiatrist or specialist.

wait a minute. how does one fake a mental illness over the internet??

they come to forum and explain about it to gain sympathy from people. in other word - "attention whore"

my bad. sorry about that jiro.

Oh you guys are talking about just faking for a psychiatrist appointment. I thought you meant for consecutive days or 24/7 as some DPW's do.

not your fault at all. My comment does sound pretty broad. It is good that you asked me... now that my comment has gotten more specific. :cool2:

gee. i hope no one here on ad thinks of me that way because i talk about my bipolar. i'm not trying to get attention. i'm just trying to advocate for those who have the disorder and educate people who may be unfamiliar with the illness.

wow that long? that is twisted...

I didn't see where she said that, but I tend to believe it. Even still alot of people diagnosed with malingering will doctor hop to avoid detection. It's sad.

absolutely not. I'm pretty sure you are for real... otherwise jillio would have detected it and point it out on you long time ago.

i don't know about others, but i was specifically talking about psychiatric disorders.

There are also other ways in which you can fake symptomology. I won't name them here, but there are ways. It's not as hard as you would think. Not at all.

I may be confused. she may have mentioned it in PM with me... or not. Either way... now you know. skilled specialists know what to do if they have a suspicion and it takes a simple questioning to find out for sure. and you should know - Dr. House is infamous for it :laugh2:

"Everybody lies"

I definitely do not think that you talk openly about your bipolar for attention Hear Again. I think your intentions come across pretty clearly, mainly for awareness and education as you mentioned.

what i think jillio said (if i remember correctly and i pointed this out as well) was that malingerers are detected by a series of diagnostic tests that are given by therapists and psychiatrists.

that's true. jillio is very perceptive and would catch onto that in an instant.
