"Deaf People can do anything but hear" whats wrong with this slogan - discuss

That's great!

Wish Canada could have that availability, too. Even if, like my son, it is just used to make appointments through relay or contact businesses with a TTD line. It still helps with independant communication.

My son doesn't. He just has the TDD line. He uses his Blackberry and his computer for everything else.

A TDD line and a landline are the same thing. The TDD line is just one that has not had a regular voice phone plugged into it but just the TDD. Or if, as in my case, you want to use VCO with the relay service the TDD and any regular phone can be chained together. Also, visitors can use the phone part like any other voice phone.

Also, there are a few TDD's out there that have digital cell phone connectors (Ameriphone Q90D and Ultratec Compact / C are very portable; the Krown desktop models can be ordered with a cell connector as an option).

Trust me, I know all about landlines and TDD lines. Have been using a TDD line for over 25 years, thank you. And the rest of the posters here know about them, as well. We are all very well versed in communication choices for the deaf.

But do you have to have a landline first in order to get a free tdd line?

I have to say it's such a relief not having a landline anymore because it forces people to contact me in other ways so it actually turned out to be a good thing.

Between what DeafCaroline asked and what you (jillio) replied I thought some (especially if there are any new people reading this) might get the impression they were different things.

No, I don't think so. And DC and I knew exactly what we were discussing. If someone is confused about it, they will generally ask a question.

As a user of TTY over 15 years-Bell Canada user- I don't have any problem accessing TTY relay operators-no charge- dial 711. My phone is Ultra Tech 1140 purchased from Cdn Hearing Society/Toronto. There is NO charge for using this service as the cost is part of the telephone charge for every customer. I understand this is a CRTC ruling a long time ago as anyone with a telephone can benefit from this service My phone doesn't have a special line-just plugged the phone into my phone jack
I understand TDD is Telephone Device for the Deaf. which my TTY is. It also have TEXT capabilty which means I can key to the Relay service and they speak for me. I use Voice Carry Over. Lots of practice of speaking loud and clear so other can hear you.

To date no one has hung up. I even used it to talk to ING DIRECT re bank account.

I also have Bell Canada Telemessage service- current cost $10.95 month for all INCOMING calls. I believe 1996 charge was $4.95 a month. Easily accessed by Relay service -either Kitchener or Quebec City. Easy to tell the first digit of their 4 digit operator number tells you where they are. Just ask Relay to access: 416-210-0698, my phone number and my access code. They key the message. I use VCO. I always advise them to delete all calls not to save them.

Smile: also advise Relay to just delete all telemarketing message WITHOUT KEYING ANYTHING. I also have a Vista regular phone which lights up all unanswered messages.

I am aware I have a Cochlear Implant however for ME it doesn't work on hearing people speak on the phone. I just continued using TTY as I have for the 15 years. Sunnybrook/Toronto advise about half does use a regular phone after implantation.

Whether my experience here in Ontario is same as in other countries-no idea.
I have no comment re VOIP etc- which I don't have at the present time.

Looks like a phone with a "qwerty keyboard". The screen is blue just under the handset.
Fortunately the Relay operators-then part of Bell Canada were of great assistance in getting used to using the service-way back in 1996. Still appreciate the Relay operators assistance-to this day. I have commented previously in the Relay section.

Oh boy - I haven't used a TTY in YEARS! - since I got Internet. Had a cell phone, but stopped after using the Blackberry 8703e. Ugh.

Um I mean if they still make them any more!

I know what you mean. When I first asked the Deaf Society about getting one 2 years ago, I was advised not to get one as they were phasing out and hardly anyone was using them anymore due to smartphones.

How long my TTY service will exist- no idea. Given my age-not exactly a "long range problem to worry about". One's health-a more urgent concern.

how about ?
Hey Hearing people,
We spoke with our mouths, now its time for you to sign with your hands,
stop being lazy!

Haven't seen a tty in years!

Go to either of the sites that Reba and I posted and you can at least see photos of current ones. Also, put it in as a search on E-Bay.

I still find one very useful because I do not sign; but neither can I understand on the phone. My solution is a direct connected TTY in combination with a regular phone on the same line and VCO through my state Relay.

Sorry for the almost double post I was trying to edit!
