I am hoping with new Supreme Court Justices, and a new Presidency and cabinet, we will begin to see a turn around in the interpretation of "LRE" under the ADA. I think the hope is realistic that we will begin to move away from the automatic assumption that the mainstream placement is always the LRE.

jillio,

lre? <confused>

From what I am reading that some of you are posting that her son need is not being met at school while OP is saying that her son teacher teaches her son via sign language but that other kids with CI was not playing with her son because other kids do not know sign langauge. Unless I read that wrong I would think her son educated need is being met. It just that he seem to be lonely at school because other kids wouldn't fellowship with him since they do not know sign langauge.

And the OP clearly stated "stop use CI or something" which is obivously OP is blaming it squarely on CIs at the beginning not the teachers or parents or education system then posts started to fly back and forth dragging teachers and educators and parents into it that OP later recant stating that she was in unhappy mood or something and apolozied for posting remarks about the CI. Then started to post about teachers and parents.

I would like to add that most parents put their childern to mainstream school not because they want their child to be oral only. Lots of parents put their childern in mainstream because they don't want their child to be far from them and be at home with them all the time if deaf school is not in their hometown. I am one of those child whom wound up being in mainstream school all my life but in deaf educated program and with an interpeter in hearing classes because my hearing parents doesn't want me to be 2 hours away in a deaf school. I had few deaf friends in mainstream school whom hearing parents have the same feeling as my parents and all thier kids sign and use interpeter in hearing classes. So mainstream school is not always oral only unless that rule have changed today that I don't know about.

I do have some friends today that their deaf childern are in mainstream school with interpreter because the nearest deaf school is 3 hours drive away and for the same reason they don't want their child to be far from them. They all sign ASL.

.

location, location, location... CI, CI, CI... bam a quick fix for the hearing parents of deaf children?

My mother had guts to send me to a deaf school one and half hour away because she thought of me first. However, I can understand other parents who don't want to miss their deaf kids weekly, tough indeed.

But again, there are some mainstream especially oral schools that didn't do 'em well, either.

But she is judging children just like mine, and parents just like me. Why is that ok? These parents have gone out of their way to put their children in a Deaf school, that is the right choice! Why are they being judged for that?

I have been in deaf school, hearing parents put kid with ci in deaf school, that kid don't know signs, and parents thought kid is a deaf which belong to deaf school but they didnt know that almost whole of deaf school use ASL, very few kids can talk voice, and they didnt know that their kid was lonely, sometimes kids never tell parents abt how their feel being at deaf school. I have so many friends who have hearing parents, they can't communication with their parents, their parents don't know signs, kids learning the signs from school or other place or by friends. But now they have better ci technology, it worked mostly on kids which I am happy because so they can communication with their parents better and everybody too. But point is, parents don't want to learn signs or teach kids signs, and want put them in deaf school. Not right. Should put kids in school where kids can understand others and teacher. Feel comfortable to be same as other kids. Not being only one who don't know signs with whole kids who is deaf using ASL, no oral. Not fair for kids. Your kid is lucky to be in school with other kids who is same as your kid. I just can't find a place where is the kids with signs as same as my son's age in this city. So that's problem is I don't know what to do with my kid, because the kids with CI using oral only taking over deaf program in my city the where deaf program used to have kids who know signs and oral both. But now it become orals only. Removed the signs. It offended me. Some of doctor told parents to not teach kids the sign, learn only oral so they can focus on oral more time.

jillio,

Least Restrictive Environment...a law that was passed to make all handicapped children placed in an environment that had the least restrictions on their development in the educational system...unfortunately, it was detrimental for many deaf students because by following the hearing logic, placing deaf children in mainstreamed programs with all hearing children instead of in deaf programs or at Deaf schools was the least restrictive for them when it turned out to the the most restrictive educational setting ever for them.

But as Jillio just pointed out, deaf kids who go to hearing school end up having social and emotional problems. That is why the parents want their kids to be around other Deaf kids. Do the teachers use ASL as the class language?
If the kids see signs, they will learn them. Your son can be an example for them. Or are they mean to him?

LRE... I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess "Least restrictive Environment..."?

Jillio, correct me if I'm wrong, please.

thanks, ocean. i probably could have figured that out from the context of jillio's post, but for whatever reason the abbreviation just didn't make sense to me.

Looks like we posted at the same time. :giggle:

But, thanks for explaining the law. :ty:

No problem...well, hopefully this thread can turn out to one where everyone can understand where each other is coming from without attacked. Good night!

After catching up on this topic and is appalled by Vallee, too.

It's something so appalling that those people who are CI-only approach supporters continue failing to admit that they do have difficult social lives later on. Yet they still say it's the better way... so lame of them!

--------------

Damienmommy, keep teaching your son ASL and hope that you will find a better solution (school & social) for him... since this school apparently is heading toward oralism/TC whatever therefore you might need to seek other school, likely.

Yeah, I am trying to find a other place where the deaf kids who know the signs then i will take my son out of that stupid deaf program before deaf program become oral program.

Yup, it seems like so!

Wish you the best luck and feel free to ask for our support anytime.

What program was your son in? Did the teacher sign too or not? I'm trying to find out what program did you enrolled your son into.

And for damienmommy---- I can understand how you feel that you would like your deaf son with children that knows sign language so that he wouldn't feel left out, but I think you should do something about it by taking him out and putting him in another program where signs are permit. But, you cannot say "I wish those children didn't have cochlear implant" that can offended those who have cochlear implant. I hope you understand that. ;)

And for the rest of you who were bashing onto Vallee, knock it off, She is entitle to her opinion, deal with it. That's all I gonna say for right now. :)

Yeah i shouldn't have say that. i was just mad at this moment. But later, I am fine now. I had a lot of thinking about and this things kinda helped me to think more.
