Yes exactly!
What it boils down to, is the unspoken message that oral only is best b/c it seems more normal....to me a parent chosing oral only is saying "oh no....we don't fully accept you as you are...........we're going to force you to confirm to OUR view of what is normal...you're gonna have to put all your energy into faking it,and being on the edge of spoken conversation"

I guess in the end there are very different experiences on using a Cochlear Implant re: adults/ young children.
I have had my Cochlear Implant only 6 years-to date none of the above listed problems has occurred.
Is one factor the skill of the surgeon? aside: the doctor I had is an associate professor at University of Toronto-Cochlear Implant surgery.

Further aside: Sunnybrook/Toronto is one of the 3 hospitals that are designated by the Ontario government to "handle Cochlear Implants". Ottawa and London are the other 2 for adults. Specialized skills built up since 1984-valuable?
aside: children are handled at Hospital for Sick Children. Toronto in Ottawa-Children Hospital.

The actual experieince of Sunnybrook/Toronto since 1984 suggests otherwise re Implanting adults. 2 out of 3 referred adult patients-not suitable for Implants.
I have mentioned this fact many times.

What other Cochlear Implant centres actual experience-not mentioned here in Alldeaf.com?

Whether a 2 year old DEAF child is knowledgable about Cochlear Implants seems improbable. Thus the parents have to make all choices which is their responsiblity as parents. They were the ones that "brought the child into this world". Who they consult etc =up to them.

As for prelingual DEAF babies perhaps the "fact of absorbing speaking-easier" may be a factor in the parent's consideration re: Cochlear Implant.

But wasn't it a terible struggle? Haven't both of you said that it was tedious and difficult, and that many children were, in fact, not able to develop age appropriate spoken language? If that is the case, you should be celebrating CIs because they allow children to develop those skills without the years of therapy and tedious, difficult, and sometimes impossible struggles.

Ok. Can't let this go.......I have NEVER met a Deaf child or adult with a cochlear implant (with a prelinguistic loss) who didn't endure years of tedious speech therapy. Let there be no mistake.... CIs are NOT a magic bullet. It is a tremendous commitment to implant a child. I see too many families who just were not realistic about the time and continual effort that kind of therapy takes all the while expecting their child to be oral while scratching their heads as to why their child is frustrated.

Precisely!!!!!! There's dead on right off the bat canidates.....the ones who get VERY little or no benifit from traditional aids....but the thing is,it's very difficult to discern how well a kid hears with hearing aids....Very difficult...I mean yeah you can tell that a dhh kid is hearing SOMETHING.....but you can't tell exactly how well they can hear.......So they freak parents out by implying if they wait their kid is going to end up selling ABC cards.....There are still audiologically deaf kids who benifit from aids you know!

I had younger really is worst to increase continue migraine serious . failure. serious kidding no joke. professor said found it assessment to 4 month already alots of investigate. it is very serious. it is sound look likes risk for you. I afraid for you advise reason cocern high level prevent to migraine is serious awful health doesn't work for me failure. reason I had previous younger migraine then surgery unsuccessfully no perfect. I have failure weakness migraine is something weak. No Joking serious why serious. I have treatment. I numerous. I really imply worst to suffer to headache to cochlear implant you don't believe to me. I wonder to. doctor said prevent to migraine will increase risk no damage brain.. I surprised. I lucky. remove implant everything fine. I go treatment right now lucky whew. I am serious I got to recently weird to annoy continue, I report to files history. It is unfortunately experiment to specialist to how issues limit. Migraine is very risk for your cochlear implant. It is very shocking to me!.
