Cochlear Implant advertisement at wrong place (Utube)

I don't think her point is valid (the girl in the video) I don't get the impression that she understands that running an EXPO is a business venture. In honesty I dont' understand ASL enough to follow exactly what she said so I am basing my opinion on what has been discussed in this thread.

Of course her point is valid, and after all, it is nothing more than her opinion which is not right or wrong, but simply is. Just because you don't agree with her doesn't make it invalid.

I get what you are saying shel. The problem is that as soon as you step outside of the real world then the validity of the argument becomes moot. At least in my opinoin it does. I can empathise with what you are saying but the reality is that many businesses are driven by money. I believe the ASL expo probably started out strictly ASL but needed capital to operate and limiting the scope to ASL only wasn't generating enough. Granted that's alot of speculation but I would venture to say that if someone started a grass roots effort to hold a truly ASL only expo, they would most likely encounter the same financial problems. And that is not to slight ASL in any way shape or form.

I understand about businesses being driven by profit and I also understand the woman's feelings. That's life I guess .

The variable that is missing here is how the expo was promoted. If it was promoted as an ASL expo, and directed toward the signing deaf community was has been noted, then she had a valid point, as the promoter has engaged in false advertisement. Perhaps, had the expo advertised that CI booths would be inside, the woman would not have chosen to pay the entrance fee to the expo.

Okay I get you. I just think that by keeping CIs and ASL as things to be separated that it just encourages the polarization that we currently see.

I would not see a CI expo for example as having to be only about CIs and devices but a show that emcompasses the choices within the deaf world itself. I would be looking for a rounded picture and would personally welcome stalls that promoted and advocated sign language.

I guess we'll just have to agree to differ on that one. I think you would feel happier about it if you knew it was happening both ways.

Hi R2D2

I agree, I am your opinion. I come from Germany, EXACT same this way. Here deafs ppl dont like both of GSL expo and CI expo. They would protest to them about this CI expo, cuz we all dont want too many deafs become CI.
We are proud of DEAF so we will have fun to see at GSL expo. CI ppl will have fun on this way for CI expo.

Oh, if you don't like to have CI booth at ASL Expo then just don't let them to bother you and just ignore, if lacking of interest then wouldn't offers again in next year.

There's hearing aids booth at some ASL expo but I don't need bother on them, both of HA and CI booth.

Exaclt my thought. She is presenting her opinion in the hope of influencing the organizers to change the event. That's her right under the first amendment. It is a valid opinion. If Rockdrummer feels so strongly against her opinion than let him similarly express his or her views. Calling it invalid is seriously wrong.

p.s. the girl in the video has a nice sense of humor by the way. (CI's in each finger).

Most people normally dont take notice of it. I know I probably didnt if I saw one but that woman in the video really took notice..ha! Just felt that was a very valid point she made and thought to share it with u all. :)

I argee with this lady at Utube. No bash at me, I support asl 100 percent. I don't support CI that hearing parent want put deaf children because Many hearing people don't accept their deaf children. Sad! I support deaf people who want to get CI. That is fine with me.
