I don't understand...
The woman was saying that there was a CI booth at an ASL expo...she was saying that was a big conflict of interest and disrespectful to ASL but the expo was about ASL and ASL-related info...not about CIs or about speech. I gotta agree with her.

I don't see the problem. If there was an ASL stall at a CI expo on the other hand I would say "good for them for seeking to broaden peoples' minds!". CIs and ASL don't have to be mutually exclusive do they? As I understand it there are a growing number of ASL users who also have CIs.
The woman's point was that there is a right place or time for certain things. This expo was about ASL and ASL only..not about CIs or Hearing aides. That's what she was saying that it felt like a huge conflict of interest cuz CIs are about promoting speech and listening skills. Does a deaf person get a CI to become more fluent in ASL?
This is not about bashing CIs..just about the woman's feeling that it just seems like the booth was at the wrong place. This was a time for ASL promotion and awareness only.
Okay I get you. I just think that by keeping CIs and ASL as things to be separated that it just encourages the polarization that we currently see.
I would not see a CI expo for example as having to be only about CIs and devices but a show that emcompasses the choices within the deaf world itself. I would be looking for a rounded picture and would personally welcome stalls that promoted and advocated sign language.
I guess we'll just have to agree to differ on that one. I think you would feel happier about it if you knew it was happening both ways.
Like events such as Deaf Expo...it would be more appropriate to have the CI booths but just was about ASL...not about Deaf schools, HAs, Deaf history, Cis, Deaf sports...just about ASL storytelling, ASL Art...u know what I mean?
Okay I got you. It sounds like it's a very specific expo.
True...........but were there also hearing aid booths as well? One of the things that I dislike about CIs is that its so PUSHED. Like I had someone randomly IM me and start talking about how I should get a CI.............it's like ENOUGH with the adverstising!CIs and ASL don't have to be mutually exclusive do they? ASL EXPO is a trade show targeted to the sign language community, with an emphasis on bringing together the deaf and the hearing communities. The purpose of the Expo is to educate consumers, establish material visibility, and generate sales leads for exhibitors of all kinds, including video relay services, wireless communications, interpreter services, American Sign Language video distributors, baby sign video distributors, and any other businesses that want to market their products and services to deaf and hard of hearing consumers.

Who is really to blame. It's the promoters of the expo that screen and allow the booths in. I would question the promoters who let the CI booth in there. It's them that decide what the expo is about and who is allowed in. Maybe they didn't feel that it was a strictly ASL expo and wanted to expand it to include other things that affect the deaf population.Like events such as Deaf Expo...it would be more appropriate to have the CI booths but just was about ASL...not about Deaf schools, HAs, Deaf history, Cis, Deaf sports...just about ASL storytelling, ASL Art...u know what I mean?
