I was one of those HA users who has excellent speech. I got my CI at 41.

And to add to deafskeptic's point, I was one of those who has excellent speech as such that the average hearing person doesn't know I'm Deaf and all without without HA or CI. I am mentioning this simply to drive home that CIs aren't a miracle working device. The same aims can be achieved by pure hard work, sweat and even tears, though I would not wish it on any child or person for that matter. It's not worth it. After 46 or so years of oral practice, I still find it an conscious effort. Speech to me is more of a 'curse' than a blessing.

Is it simplistic to ask : why have speech ability in the first place?

You seem to have it down pat like a 'science' and then you say your daughter is learning 'naturally'. :hmm:

Bingo! I don't see what is so difficult to understand about these being directive teaching experiences that are goal directed. That is not naturally acquiring language.

Sure, we do language learning exercises with hearing kids, too. AFTER they have already naturally acquired and internalized the rules and functions of a native language. We formally teach to expand on that which was naturally acquired from birth. But using formal teaching in place of acquisition doesn't mean the function and experience of acquisition is being replicated. It is not.

I would be inclined to think that a professional therapist would not need 'how therapy works' spelled out to her.

:giggle: And is perfectly capable of recognizing therapy when she sees it, no matter what the parent wants to call it.:P

Her objection seems to be based on the premise that speech therapy and language coaching is a bad thing in and of itself, so she is downplaying the extent to which her child benefits from it. Frankly, I don't get it.

Nor do I. If you are committed to that approach, just say so. All this defensiveness and trying to portray it as something else makes me wonder.

I have learned that If I want to convince people I am deaf, it's best not to open my mouth at all.

I hate it when people call my CI a miracle.

I learn not to care. Someone say once "you don't LOOK deaf..." um ok? Wtf deaf look like? I'm deaf whether ignorant hearie believe it or not, so I don't care what they think! Much easier this way. :)

No, it is talking AT your child. It is parent directed. It is totallly opposite of the way a child is meant to acquire language. And that fact holds implications not just for future language use, but also for negative impact on the parent/child relationship.
....... And you know this because, what, you were there to observe the interactions between us and our daughter?
Maybe you only dwell upon the negatives of the parent/child relationship because you are looking in the mirror too much........
.

....... I find it incredibly sad when parents do what is convenient for them and then attempt to justify it as being what is best for the child.

I also find that very sad....
A parent not taking responsibility, not daring to make a tough decision for your child like a parent should but letting the child take the decision at a time in life when possibilities are limited.....

When people find out my son is Deaf and they do the whole "Oh, I'm SO sorry" thing, we'll look them in eye and ask bluntly, "Why?" It's funny watching them fumble for an answer that won't make look like a complete dick.

Well look who's back!:laugh2:

Possibilities are never limited unless you choose to limit yourself.:cool2: People who do not have a CI and were not implanted as children are not "limited". Those who do have a CI are not any more advantaged than those who utilize an HA or any other assistive device. In fact, they are far more limited than the signing Deaf.

If you feel the need to be sad, be sad for yourself and the limits that your audism place on you and those close to you.:cool2:

The clan obviously contacted him for additional support. Isn't it funny how they all start coming out of the wordwork when one runs out of responses or gets backed against the ropes with their own nonsense?

I predicted this and other turns of events a couple of days ago to another ADer via PM. It is all so transparent.

Wow, some posse!

I predicted this and a couple of other events that have occurred well in advance of them actually showing up. It is the same pattern time and time again.

Yep. It is as if you choreographed the whole thing! :giggle:
