Are you waiting for stem cells or something to improve hearing?

I've read every post HA made on the page you linked to. There is no quote from her saying "CI improved my quality of life." Nor is there anything that implies it. Like I said, if you have something, you need to show it.

I second that.

Try again Jiro.

Attention:

Guys, please stop talking about Hear Again. This thread has nothing to do with her, it's about stem cells and ways to improve your own hearing. Let other's make their own choice what they want to do. Stop the bickering, it's their ears. Worry about your own ears only and let others worry about their own ears. The choices others make have nothing to do with your own choice!

As for improving quality of life, stop arguing whether CIs or stem cells may or may not improve the quality of life for others. You don't know their reasons and they don't have to disclose their reasons. Just talk about why you want stem cells or why you wish to stick with HAs or CIs. Talk about yourself and your own life only. Let others speak for themselves, please don't speak for others because you don't know their reasons.

Don't get my thread locked by bickering and going off topic. Discuss stem cells, yourself and your own opinions. Keep personal remarks to yourself only. If you must comment about another alldeaf member, take it to PMs then! Thanks for reading. I will reply to your comments soon.

I'd rather take the treatment that's available today. There's no sense in waiting for something that will most likely never happen.
Um, you said you wouldn't take the treatment since CI is good enough for you now. And now you are saying you'd take the treatment should the treatment (i.e. stem cells to treat hearing loss) be available today???

Besides, I have CIs so there is no need for me to seek any other kind of treatment for my deafness.

Interesting. :hmm:
:cool2:

I was speaking in general terms. Don't take my posts so literally.

kokomo,

You proved my point. I said I'd prefer to take advantage of medical treatment available today to improve hearing loss and that's exactly what I did -- I have CIs. :)

As I said before a few postings ago, the quality of life is rather subjective and personal so it's different for each person when it comes these kinds of technology (CIs or HAs). What's more to be said?

It is just my personal opinion and knowledge of the subject that stem cells or in the subject of biotechnology will provide the means to restore hearing loss to that of normal hearing. I've provided the links as to why this is the case. And the rate of research being done in this area will help ensure that a treatment will become viable in the very near future...definitely within my lifetime.

Others can stop with this -> nonsense.

I am agreeing with you and I am a big believer in technology. Thanks for the links you posted. I also believe stem cells will be a major player in the next few years and within 10 years we will see treatments done to improve hearing.

Don't discuss other's quality of life, just discuss your own. I will say that I am thankful for great HA technology that has given me access to more sounds/speech. I will be thankful for great stem cell technology that will further improve on my hearing.

The truth is no one yet knows when clinical trials will begin for restoring hearing or to what extent hearing will be restored. It may be possible that a 20db restoration on hearing will be achieved in 10 years but could take 50 years for hearing to be restored to normal or even 100%. I am going to be realistic and ask for 20db improvement in my hearing. It's great if I get more than that but the first 20db matters the most as this is the point where my audiologist said I will hear perfect with HAs.

For instance, I hear at only 40-45db at 1000Hz but with a 20db improvement and with more powerful HAs down the road, im looking at hearing 10-20db at 1000Hz aided. Normal hearing is 25db or better. Of course id like more but I certainly won't be disapointed hearing better than 25db. An improvement is an improvement :D

Naw, I am not waitin' for stem cells to improve my hearing. I am perfectly fine with being profoundly DEAF! And, I plan to stay that way until the day I die. :)

deafdude,

You "only" hear 40-45 dB at 1000 Hz? That's actually very good.

Is that really a necessary ? I mean, do they required to have CIs ? :ugh:

Heairng people view deafness as limiting. I dont think it is necessary but they think differently. Oh well.

Ahh, I see. Well, sometimes I don't like to see some hearin' people thinkin' this way like this about deaf children/people. Some deaf children/people are just fine without CIs and that some hearin' people don't understand. Deaf children/people are more comfortable without it and don't feel that it really bothers them. I would like to know why it bothers to some hearin' people? :hmm:

Sighted people feel the same way about blindness.

Yea I agree..I admit I used to think that way. Hell, I even used to think that was about deafness because I was so brainwashed into thinking I was disabled and incapable of doing as much as my hearing peers could do. No wonder I ended up with depression!

I know how you feel shel. I had the same attitude after I lost my hearing. I went into a severe depression and was suicidal. I now know that deafness is not the end of the world nor is it something to be feared.

I'm kinda am.... I mean I'm leaving my right ear left alone, so incase in the future, if there was something that hearing can be improved by stem cells or something like that, I would have a chance with my right ear as it hasn't been distoryed by CI, like my left ear has been completely distoryed by CI, having No chance to recover any "natural" Hearing.

I'm proud of being deaf, I'm truely am as it's who I am. But part of me always wondered what it's like to hear like a hearing person, thus the reason I'm leaving my right ear unattended.

But as for now.... I'm not sure if I want to do something like that.... I like for who I am, how I am.

I guess I'll see what happens in the future, if such thing does exist....

nope i'd rather have something that has been available for use longer i.e. hearing aids or CI if it comes to the point that hearing aids don't work....
