I am proud of the United States and I would be happy to live here and serve her if I could. But there's just so many double standards in the name of equality that it baffles me. Yes, I do believe America has a lot to offer for those who are willing to do some work.
The things I have trouble with is how our elected representatives at the local, state, and federal levels abuse their privilege of service for their own gains. I believe it should be considered an honor to be elected by your constituents to represent them, but the key there is that you MUST listen to your constituents and do your best to improve their condition and to help bring about positive change. What doesn't help is that these elected positions were never meant to be a full-time job. The representatives, senators, and so forth were meant to spend the majority of their time working and living in their home communities and would leave once a year to voice the concerns of the people at a gathering at the capitol or county seat once a year. They brought measures, debated them, vetoed bad ideas, passed good ideas, and when their missions were accomplished or settled to a compromise that benefited. Sadly, it has turned into a full-time occupation with outrageously high salaries, benefits, kick-backs, and under-the-table rewards, all of which are horribly attained by lying, cheating, stealing, conniving, cutting-down, putting-off, excluding, and maybe even a few tricks in the bedroom or bathroom stall, depending on how you wish to look at it. If we are going to pay our elected officials these high salaries, then we as citizens should hold them to a very high standard to where so much as one fart or sniffle out of place then we can have them removed from office. Yes I demand perfection while you are representing me and my needs and you are earning far far more in one year than what it will take me to earn in ten years, and yes I demand it as long as my tax dollars are going into your paycheck, especially when I can find better uses for that money.
Another thing is America screams equality for all, but we are far from a nation of equality. Why is it in America that an insurance provider can deny you coverage if you were diagnosed as diabetic 10 years ago when working for another employer? Why is it in America everyone can marry except for same-sex couples? Why is it in America that on the average women and minority groups still earn less than the average white male?
Why is it OK for a man to continue to live for an additional 20-30 years on taxpayer dollars after he was found guilty by a jury of 12 peers of capital murder because death is considered cruel and unusual punishment despite having brutally ended the life of his victim?
Why is it OK for a promiscuous woman to have an abortion every time she comes up pregnant? I don't want to outlaw abortion altogether, but we need a common sense approach to this. Abortions should be legal only in cases of rape, incest, medical conditions that may cause serious life threatening complications for the mother and/or the child, or if the child is going to be born with severe impairments or disabilities to which the quality and quantity of his/her life may also be compromised and cannot be corrected with surgery. Disabilities/impairments/etc. such as blindness, deafness, spina bifida, misformed body parts, cleft palate, and other such abnormalities would not qualify for an abortion. Only the most extreme cases such as a lack of a skeletal structure (yes this has happened), no brain function, no vital organs (this also has happened), no airway structure (another extreme rarity) etc, would be qualified for an abortion and the mother would be advised to take preventative measures to keep from becoming pregnant in the future and to possibly into the option of adoption.
Also want to see more same-sex couples being allowed to adopt foster children. There are so many in need of a loving stable home. It is a proven point when a heterosexual couple cannot provide for their children, but a same-sex couple can. Why take away a good home for these children in need, just because we live in a homophobic state.
Our mother country, England, is steeped in tradition but yet they are far more progressive than we are in terms of education, equality, and health care. That's a scary thought when USA is supposed to be the most progressive country in the world with the best economy, education, and health care systems in the world. I find it troubling when a developing country such as India is routinely scoring higher in proficiency exams than a country such as the United States where advanced technology is EVERYWHERE.
Maybe the best way to look at the future is to look at the past?
