Am I (D)eaf?

Looks like Byrdie and I disagree on this one, but if you are Deaf in your heart, then you are Deaf. Deaf cultural values and norms are what you embrace.

I agree with you Jillio. If sure strictures were followed, Deaf would have died out long ago. 90 percent have hearing parents and still only live Deaf life.

Holy cow! You are so perfect a fast learner! :ily:

I don't think so because there will always be diseases and illnesses that will cause deafness.

It's a matter of finding another mate that suffered the same illness/disease and passing it onto your children--producing Deaf kids.

Disease/illness will not transfer deafness to the children. Only a genetic mutation will. Most genetic deafness is reccessive gene. That means that both parents have to have the same recessive gene, and even then, not all their children will inherit the deafness. There is 50% chance that each child born will be hearing. It would average out something like this:

2 out of 4 would be deaf
1 out of the 4 would be hearing, and not a carrier of the gene
1 out of 4 would be hearing, but a carrier for the gene, meaning that even though they are hearing, they could transmit the genetic deafness to their children

However there are diseases/illnesses that can cause a gene mutation......:)

One has not been discovered that results in genetic deafness. And because gene mutation from disease and illness, it is not passed on as a genetic trait.

That we don't know of yet.

Remember that there are diseases/illnesses that can cause gene mutation by altering the DNA of cells.

That is true. But it is an acquired mutation, and not likely to be transferred to offspring. Also, disease and illness to not alter an individual's genes in exactly the same way as it would alter another individual's, as the alteration is dependent upon the individual's heriditary genetic make-up. Unless that mutation becomes standardized, and is found in a good part of the population, the mutated gene simply dies out. Also, it would have to become prevalent enough in the population to actually be responsible for causing a disorder that is traced to the gene mutation in offspring.

theres other illnesses that can cause hearing loss/deafness. scarlett fever for example. HoH/deafness will never be oliminated with tampering with genetics or otherwise. it will always be around.

Then what are we disagreeing about? :laugh2:

The vast majority of congenital deafness is not a genetic cause, but exposure to a viral agent in utero. That is why 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents.

interesting.... none of my relatives are deaf and neither are my parents. However my brother and I are deaf. I'm not sure why but it sounds like my parents are both carrier of recessive "deaf' gene?? :dunno:

Only a genetic test may determine that.....
