If you're pointing to me....it's your choice to or not to...but if you're gonna ride with me, you're gonna wear it. And if you're driving without a seat belt...then you can afford to pay the ticket....Besides, it's the Law...and don't believe just beduz you don't like it....it's not gonna change.

Ezzactly!

What people don't understand is...when someone racks up medical bills due to severe injuries, and can't pay the bills...guess who has to pay? You, me, the taxpayers.

Don't want to wear belts or helmets? That's your prerogative, and I don't care whether you live or die, but.....I don't want my taxes to increase to pay for other peoples' mistakes, especially if they had easy access to the means to prevent them. So, unless you are filthy rich, put yer belt or helmet on...

When I ride my bicycle, I never do it without my helmet. It's a must-have, and vital to my survival. If I don't wear it and slam into a car door, I'm done. Simple as that.

Hochi and Robin, I agree with you both. The law exists not necessarily to save lives but to save insurance companies money. However, if I'm in a car with anyone we all better have seatbelts on. If I'm driving and I'm hit or hit someone and you are badly injured, enter the lawyers and my life was over if I hit someone due to negligence but if you're killed because you don't have a seatbelt on, where's the nearest exit from life. I will not want to live with myself after that.

Hochi: Freedom exists within limits. People gasp as the lack of free speech but the reality is there have been confines and ordinances (no loud music after 11 p.m. where I used to live) put on this for years. Doesn't make it right but personally, I'm very happy that the KKK is kept out of my neighborhood. They're a scary bunch and I remember their march outside of Chicago @1977. So, shut them up. In terms of those who scream and hold up signs against the GLBT community in their holier than I am attitude, go ahead scream and yell and if you get close to me, bring in the cops. I'm taking away their right because they are too close to my space. So, yeah, man, the government interferes and they do it way too much. I have a piece of paper over my camera on my computer. But, sometimes it ain't a bad thing. At least they're not making me wear a seatbelt on my motorcycle :) but I do have to wear a helmet. And, ya know what? It has saved my nogging from being banged up even dropping and rolling my bike from a dead stop (I never have dropped it moving more than @1mph).

Boy, did I go over topic here.

hey all cool. i was just pointing something out.
as for the gov. i'm very much a believer in less is better. that goes for laws too.

Drunk people don't wear seat belts. That is a very strange claim......

But if you're curious the most drunk person on the car tends to have least serious injuries (unless they're at the direct point if impact) their reflexes are the most affected and they don't brace themselves. They're kind of boneless

Not that that's a good thing about alchohol just a little bit of didja know?
Yeah, Ambrosia, it's because drunk people are so loose from the booze that ... analogy come to me ... it's like being a kid again and playing hard and getting up without suffering. Like watching the young football players take those hits and flying over people and getting pounded and somehow somewhat surviving (and I'm not talking about head injuries the brain flopping around is entirely different).

Drunk people not wearing seat belts would have to have a cited source. But I did say that when I drink, I used to black out and was less or not in control. With weed, I may say stupid things but doing stupid things does not happen. I get in a car, I put on a seat belt. Drunk, I don't know and I don't (fortunately) remember.

I wish I could invent technology to lock out my parents until they learn to start wearing seat belts.
But it's not your car, right?

I fear, at their advanced age, that if they were to get into a collision somewhere, it would not bode well for either one of them, which is why I wish they'd actually wear them seatbelts, but since I already do, I'm okay, but my parents?
Can you please quit referring to your parents' "advanced age"? They are just middle-aged, younger than me, and I'm not an "advanced age."

They have a "need for speed", and if they hit someone at 50 MPH on a country road, it's not gonna end well.
Well, 50 mph is hardly a "need for speed" on a country road.

However, I do agree that a wreck of any kind without seat belts can be deadly. In all the accidents I've been in, the car had a lot worse damage than I did, thanks to my seat belts.

let's bring back the Prohibition!

Within reason. Many times these days I've wished anarchy would just come because of all the garbage we put up with. You want less law, you'll see it.

We'll walk hand-in-hand (I'll wear makeup but I'll still look older than Ambrosia :) ) past the house with the confederate flag 15 minutes from here. Or, better yet, we'll stand there and make out in front of it (it's a big flag, Hochi). BUT, you can't smoke :) ! Then will you want more government or less?

Restrict the booze and lighten up without the chemicals on the weed. That's my bottom line. We'll deal with the pharmaceuticals when FF is ready for that :) lol ...

Our state doesn't require helmets except for riders under age 17 years. However, we wear ours every time we ride; not for the law but for common sense.

i would want less.
because the police are always minutes away when seconds count. the state can react sure it will react.
i can handle myself.
besides you and i would have a wicked time that night
mark my words

First of all, I apologize for calling them "advanced age", and I will try and quit that.

Secondly, my parents hardly follow the speed limits when they're going as fast as 75, and the speed limit is 50-55, for there are multiple curves to get past when they drive from Effingham, and they do it at a high rate of speed, which isn't smart.

Thirdly, it isn't mine car and truck, but they're stubborn, and I wish they'd do it for me.

This is hardly a definitive study:

"...American Bikers Aiming Toward Education cite Michigan State Police data comparing the first eight months of 2011, to the first half of 2012 and found that the number of fatalities dropped from 89 to 85, despite an increase in motorcycle registrations over the same period.

The group did not provide any information on what percentage of riders are not wearing helmets.

The new law went into effect on April 12, 2012 and requires those who wish to not wear a helmet to be over 21 years old and either have had their license for two years or complete a rider safety course...."

When I first started riding in San Jose in my mid 20s, I had long wavy, hair and rode my bike without a helmet about 30 miles away and back to work. It felt great until I stopped. Shaving it off would've been easier. I wore helmets after and they weren't legally mandated.

Laws are weird (as are reps. state dependent). They're obviously driven by lobbyists which means if $$ can be pulled in, the law will likely be passed. I don't understand how alcohol can be legal (taxation) and smoke is illegal ... competition for booze?

And it's idiotic! I'd be embarrassed to publish that.

for pot is was more racism and the paper pulp industry that was behind its prohibition

Okay, Frisky, you started this. There are some postings you should ignore (but, boy, I had fun). Questions for you:

1. Have you smoked enough to know what it does or does not do?
1a. Smoking once doesn't count because you probably didn't inhale :) . It doesn't count because in the old days (my HS days - late 60s, early 70s) smoking once did not necessarily do a thing for you.
2. When you drink, are you in control? Do you know enough not to drive?

What's your conclusion?
