Advice please: son doesn't want to wear HAs

Wirelessly posted (droid)

I found an audi who is HOH and it makes a huge difference. He wears HAs so he knows how to fit and adjust them. I probably wouldn't be wearing my HAs at all if I hadn't found him. Try to find this kind of audi. Drive far if you have to. He also knows ASL.

no one is trying to stop any child from being deaf. That is impossible. And it is disgusting to say that a parent doesn't love their child because they choose amplification.

Defensive much? :hmm:

Nobody say that she do not love her child. *You* put this out there.

Wow! That is rare, yes?

Yes! Same here, Sallylou! All of our audis have been strong or fluent in ASL, 2 have been HOH -- and it's WONDERFUL having someone who knows first-hand what a great difference a minor tweak can make and is willing to reach out and make certain the child feels comfortable communicating how he or she really feels.

We need more audis with first hand experience, that is for certain. You know, though, that leaves a question for me. From what I have seen of many hearing parents' tendency to discount what the D/deaf have to say regarding their experiences, and their insistance on evaluating everything from a hearing perspective: would these parents give anymore credibility to an audi who was deaf, or would they choose, instead a hearing audi for their deaf child?

Hearing by far :P

If the hearing parents are so admandant in making their children as hearing as they could, more likely they would give more credibility to a hearing audi than a Deaf one.

Yes, Shel and DS. That was my hypothesis. The minute the audi would suggest dealing with anything less than a medical model or from a deaf perspective, they would loose all credibility. I don't think that many hearing parents would even voluntarily use a deaf/hoh audi if there was anyway to get a hearing one instead.

we have one right here in home town in New Zealand, she's a HOH then deaf, and now got cochlear implant. Knows some NZSL and is a Counsellor 'for the Deaf" (sic) she was my counsellor at one time, because i gave her a benefit of doubt BUT, later on then she goes to CI, and Never turns up at Deaf Club, and acts very hearing , very know-it-all.... i thought nah what a big pig head she gotten to be (or was all the time). after all it seems she tries so hard to be like hearing, as far as being an AUDI AND a Cousellor for Deaf...its terrible, although she does do couselling as best she can, got 'good heart' but WRONG ideological aspirations...CRAP!!
I just think its disgusting...but that's WEIRD thats all i can say. For all I should say there is still too much of this audism, or rather 'too much place on so-called 'safe thinking' in the Deaf community , that is; relying on deaf people but with the 'demonstrated' and /or have hearing knowledge, i cant put my finger on it, its just too weird BUT its common here...something seriously wrong in the realm of ideological fundamentals and its lack of appreciate of this in the Deaf community sometimes scares me - honesty.

ahem , i must re-read this last 2 pages of this thread to understand whats Jillios talking about re- credibility between hearing vs deaf audi in hope id understand better on what i just wrote...its an interesting thread..

someone actually did, earlier in this very thread.

sometimes those tools are not appropriate for the individual. In those cases, one needs to accept that and stop trying to use a tool to accomplish a goal that is not possible. Behind that tool is a living, breathing, thinking, feeling child. That should be the primary focus, not the innanimate tool.

r_i_g_h_t !!!

I'm thinking of a poster here who was all about Deaf perspective and ASL and bi-bi education. Then an implant was done. Poster did a complete switch to oral only. Second implant done. Poster became even more rabid about the hearing perspective and oral only. It seems to have that affect on those that were insincere and just attempting to "fit in" with the deaf.

My stepmother is friends with a deaf audi, by the way. They really are not that rare. And they do have more of the perspective and understanding of what a deaf kids experiences.

the head audiologist at john tracy clinic (when my daughter was there) was deaf.

So? Anyone working at JTC uses a medical model. Deaf people can be audist and perceive deafness as pathological, too. We have even seen it on this forum.

I'm glad to hear that they are not as rare as my experience would indicate. I have seen only 3 and they were HOH, late deafened.

well, maybe she worded it out wrong, it should been like they were dissapointed and would love More with a hearing injected into the child by choosing amplification...just saying and its still not right either though
