Advice please: son doesn't want to wear HAs

Why would they when, subconcious or not, they want their child to hear so why on earth go to d/Deaf/HoH audiologist? An hearing audiologist would support audist parents not a Deaf one.

Plus, ignorant as some hearie parents can be, they will wonder how on earth can a Deaf/HoH audiologist provide a 'proper' assessment if they cannot hear properly. An hearing audiologist would be seen as superior. :hmm:

Bingo.

I'm prelingually HH and I agree that most FM systems don't work well to hear more than one person, which is exactly what is needed for most listening situations including the classroom (need to hear the other students, not just the teacher) and meetings.

ETA: I've also experienced what it's like to have to wear an ill-fitting hearing aid that is painful as a result and I'm not happy to read that others had to experience the same thing.

I'd like to think that is a thing of the past, but apparently it can still happen even now esp. if the audiologists don't really understand how to fit a hearing aid. And surprisingly, despite the fact that they are required to get a PhD -- a lot of them still don't know how to actually fit hearing aids. I'm not sure what they are spending all of their time learning, but its obviously not the nuts and bolts of the trade.

Exactly! I sometimes wonder, when read posts, how on earth these people go to school for *SO* long and do no understand how to help with a hearing tool and ruin it for so many because they do it wrong.

Many people think that the FM guarantees that the child will not miss anything. Wrong! It does eliminate a lot if background interferences, but it also cuts out everyone and everything else without direct access to the microphone (unless it's soundfield). My parents forced me to wear my aids since i was 4...I HATED them so much. Especially in the left ear...it was not beneficial, it hurt, and sometimes I got this annoying crackling sound right inside my ear. One day I got a hammer, took off my left aid, and smashed the fucking hearing aid into tiny pieces...I kept picking up the chucks that flew until I smashed it all. And never wore another aid in that ear again.

Yeah, it's designed with the assumption that the only thing the kid needs to hear is the teacher. I for one, learned more from listening to the other kids talk about stuff, then listening to the teacher drone on and on. Heck I think that a circle based seating arrangement is MUCH better then an FM.

Wirelessly posted

the head audiologist at john tracy clinic (when my daughter was there) was deaf.

Question is how could audi be able to hear the audiological test on patients? Even speech discrimination tests???

I hate wearing the FM system with a passion. I did poke the hole on the FM with a pencil..it did not work well. :giggle: My dad was very angry with me and suggested me to pay the full price of $600 for FM system replacement, but somehow, school took care of paying for the replacement of FM system. :laugh2:

I got my first pair of hearing aids in kindgergarden and was the same way. I had two huge bulky aids, the FM was a box attached to my side, I had antennas sticking out from both aids...I was aware of the older kids pointing and laughing and it hurt a lot.

I was not the type of kid to fight back and listened to everything I was told to do (what an angle) so I wore them all the time I remember--given, having my pink and purple ear molds made me feel a little better about the situation.

Im greatful my dad helped me find my place socially, learn to accept and be happy with who I AM! That is the best thing ANY parent can do--be there, be supportive, teach kids they are perfect the way they are and not to feel bad or take to heart what other kids say--because they are insecure about themselves.

YES! I had circle class in grade 3 and had a great school year. Learned so much that year. Absorb like a sponge everything teacher say.

LOL well I hated my old FM unit (Campus S) since it breaks down alot on me before but my new FM was so much better!

Hope the OP comes back. I gave her an helping hand. :)

Oh, I'm lurking right now! Not scared away.:giggle: Just a lot of things on my plate, so reading and processing.

But I will say that the overwhelming response seems to be, "FM sucks." So, I will definitely keep that in mind.

HA back from manufacturer. Appt w/ audi Thurs afternoon. I have a list of things to ask her based on information from this thread!

Thank you all!

this thread keeps reminding me that i need to go back to audiology that i need a new mold. I have been busy as being a mom, working mom and sports mom.

Hope things go so well with your kid's at the audi.

Being a mom is the most demanding job in the world! But you gotta take time to take care of yourself too. You deserve it!

Maybe not bad time management. Hearing just isn't your first priority. Nothing wrong with that!:P

jillo, i remember you saying that research has indicated that FM has no measurable impact on functional performance. Why not post that research so that the parent can be reassured? Seriously, I know how the mainstream is....they push the FM device as part of the dhh minimal triad, and parents get worried b/c the mainstream pushes it.

My stepmother is friends with a deaf audi, by the way. They really are not that rare. And they do have more of the perspective and understanding of what a deaf kids experiences.

Would that be Sandra Hobson? I used to go to her all the time.

If the parent wants it, I will. But I am not going to go to the trouble of digging it up and posting it otherwise. I have gone out of my way to do that in the past only to have people not even read it and continue their silly arguments.
