That is for blindness.

Got your heart racing, did I? Clicked on this thread rather quickly, eh?

Heh.

Read on folks.

Dozens of people who were blinded or otherwise suffered severe eye damage when they were splashed with caustic chemicals had their sight restored with transplants of their own stem cells — a stunning success for the burgeoning cell-therapy field, Italian researchers reported Wednesday.

The treatment worked completely in 82 of 107 eyes and partially in 14 others, with benefits lasting up to a decade so far. One man whose eyes were severely damaged more than 60 years ago now has near-normal vision.

"This is a roaring success," said ophthalmologist Dr. Ivan Schwab of the University of California, Davis, who had no role in the study — the longest and largest of its kind.

Stem cells reverse blindness caused by burns - Yahoo! News

And, no, this isn't about how this cure worked because they have autoimmune disease.

All in all, good news for those who can use this.

it is for burn and things like that. They can't repair retina. I was reading about it a few days ago

Right. I have it there in quotes. Yet it's the awesome power of adult stem cells to do the job on restoring sight.

I can imagine how easy it is for stem therapy to treat that kind of damage. We can easily regenerate cornea.

To regenerate cochlea hair cells and retina is the hard part.

What percentage of blindness is caused by accidents thou? Anyone know?

IMHO the jury is still out on the full capabilities of stem cell therapy. Time will tell as it usually does.

oh yes, skin is easy to regenerate... the complexity of cochlea or retina is what makes it a difficult challenge for stem therapy.

Don't know the exact percentage, but it is up there. Especially when you include accidents occurring during the birth process. Genetic blindness is, like genetic deafness, one of the lesser causes. More often, it is the result of a secondary complication suffered with an auto immune disorder. Another reason why I say use the research to work on cures for the auto immune disorders. Cure the auto immune disorders and you will prevent some of the leading causes of both deafness and blindness.

I found something from your article.

The University of California-Irvine researchers said their accomplishment marks the first three-dimensional tissue structure to be made from stem cells. They said it also marks the first step toward the development of transplant-ready retinas to treat eye disorders such as retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration that affect millions.

Oh really, that will be GREAT NEWS for me but it will take around decades to have treatment from stem cell to be arrive.

Do you have usher syndrome or eye diseases? Just wonders.

I have Ocular Histoplasmosis. Which causes blood vessels in the retina to overgrow then bleed and scar the retina. It also causes punched out lesions in the retina.

And in spite of the name, there is really no certainty that histoplasmosis actually causes this syndrome.

But it is one of the leading causes of blindness.

Hmm interesting, UC Irvine is my alma mater. Didn't know they'd be capable going this far in stem cell research, but must be from the medical division.

Oh I see, that sounds like not good. :(

I diagnosed with usher syndrome type 2 when I was 13 years old, you can call retinitis pigmentosa if you desired, both are similar since usher syndrome is combination of deaf and blind. After I found about it, I was very scared and unhappy about what is my life will going on with it so I'm start slowly used with it.
