Adult stem cells cures...a success!!

Someone told me that embryonic stem cell is outdated, is it true?

I think they are more likely to cause tumors so adult stem cell research is more promising.

Yes, he supports the research continuing with fetal cells. Bush outlawed research on fetal cells...Obama made it legal again.

Now let's do that old refrain, "Remember that in November!" lol

Absolutely! I find it odd that our resident Obama hater keeps asking "Name one good thing Obama has done." while at the same time extolling the virtues of stem cell research. He has answered his own question.

Could you please just keep your political attacks in the political threads?

Some of us are very interested in the retina research.

Last night some of these were removed by mods because of this.

No stem cells have.

Adult stem cells have. Embryonic stem cells can be used in any location in the body. They have not differentiated. Adult stem cells have to taken from, and used for, the specific area involved.

That wasn't a political attack. And many people are interested in stem cell research, period. Just saying that they can thank Obama for opening the opportunities up again.

So does that mean that from my damaged retina they can't get stem cells then?

Depends on the extent of the damage, but generally no. However, they can also take stem cells from someone who is a transplant match.

Here is a link on the differences between embryonic and adult stem cells. Adult stem cells are only found in organs that regenerate, and are used for those specific organs.

I thought he only outlawed the funding. People were still able to do research on it... they just wanted the money.

Research doesn't happen without funding. All research is the result of grant monies. No grant monies, no research.

Almost (and yes, correct, too). Under President Bill Clinton in 1996 you have the Dickey Amendment which prohibited the use of federal funds that would involve the destruction of embryos. Under President Bush his decision actually loosened the law and permitted federal research on embryonic stem cell lines created before a certain date. Bush didn't make it illegal to do research on embryonic stem cells. Far from it. He was the first President to allow federal monies for embryonic stem cell research. The only caveat was that research must use stem cell lines that were already created since federal tax dollars wouldn't go to killing more embryos. Private companies have always had the opportunity to do research on embryonic stem cell. They weren't at all prohibited. Nor was it outlawed, either.

So much for these myths that continue to this day.

Now, back to our regular scheduled program.

The cure for blindness!

Again with the spin! Hey, thanks, Obama, for opening the opportunities for more research and progress to be made.:ty:

Guess some people never thought of a concept called "donation" or "fund raising campaigns" for privately run research entities. All it takes is to have one example and prove it false that not all research institutions rely on grant monies to do research.

Nuh uh.

The tax exempt status granted to qualified public charities highlights the government's belief that taxpayers have the right to directly support activities they feel are important. The ability of independent, non-profit research institutions to rapidly advance medical science is an historic fact, exemplified by such well known institutions as the Salk Institute, San Diego, CA, established fifty years ago with non-federal resources to conduct polio research and vaccine development. The Bedford Research Foundation, Massachusett's only independent, non-federally funded, non-profit research institution, has lower operating costs than large teaching and medical institutions. For this reason, more research results from each donation received. "Philanthropy Is Key To Rapid Life Science Innovation" The Journal of Bio Law and Business (pdf)

Hey, TXgolfer, ever see somebody backped, er, I mean do a moonwalk?

My high school teammate used to moonwalk on the mound after he struck ssomeone out....lol

You sure about that????

Yes, I am sure about that. That is the very reason that research with fetal stem cells was brought to a halt. No grant monies available to fund the research. One research project of this nature, start to finish, can run billions of dollars.
