Adjustment to late onset deafness

The person in the doctor's office who take my vitals before the doctor comes in asked me if I wear those things to block the sound. Until that day, I used to think those people went to medical school. Makes me wonder if they went to school at all. Why would I spend thousands of dollars on these "things" if I could just go to Walmart and buy ear plugs for a dollar?

:laugh2:

Was it sallylou who said that I was advantaged because I was a man and she is surprised that I feel discrimination because of my hearing loss late in life? Shame on you. I was born a man, gee, poor me, its my fault. I was also born with presbucusis hearing loss (and only in my 20's when truly found) and more hearing loss due to gun fire and explosives helping people(military and police service). Get over yourself.....

Having been on both sides of the line (lived as male and lived as female), I have to say it's a fact of life men get advantages in a lot of situations. People are more likely to take a man's opinion more seriously than a woman's. Men are often assumed to be more competent. Until the day I can walk down the street as either sex and be treated the same, sexism is still real.

It's not your fault for being born male, but that doesn't change the fact that men do indeed benefit from male privilege.

It's easy to ignore privilege when you have it. I have white privilege. I have certain advantages because I'm white. That's how it is in our society.

Here's a list of male privilege:

Alas, a blog The Male Privilege Checklist

One of the most obvious privileges that men have the ability to go out in public at any time of the day without fear of being harassed or raped. I never walk my dog alone at night. I'm wary of men when I'm alone. I've been followed by a strange man while driving home and so have some of my girlfriends. I've had girlfriends who were hit by their husbands. I'm sure that if you're in law enforcement, you have seen a lot of this.

That's an excellent example. Even though I live as male now, I still don't go out at night alone for fear of being discovered as FTM should I ever get beat up, and also because my white cane puts me at a larger risk of being the victim of a hate crime.

White privilege is something I didn't notice until the first time I dated a person of color. Especially with my wife now, I get treated much better in general when I'm alone than when I'm with my wife. It doesn't help that I live in a part of the country where racist attitudes are still more prevalent and overt.

Men are not at all safe from those treatments. Some men are without those fears, but men who have those fears are justified in it because I have been harassed, and many men are raped, not only by women, but also by other men who can overpower them either physically or psychologically. I don't go out at night for this reason. I was harassed and followed and beat up all my life by other men on the street. They don't just go after girls. They go after anybody they think they can intimidate or subdue. I'm sure anybody in law enforcement sees every day that the gender line in harassment, stalking, and rape is a very permeable line. These are crimes that are of course committed by men to women, but also, and much more than most people realise, committed by men to men, by women to women, and by women to men. Nobody is safe these days.

CJB, I understand your concerns. I'm sorry that you have to deal with that. No one should treat you so poorly.

SerendipityG3A, you are correct that rapists pray on the most vulnerable and they are opportunistic. *Anyone* who is in the wrong place at the wrong time can be a victim. The majority of victims are women because they are often an easy target. I'm only 5 foot 3 inches so I'm not a big person. A significant number of men are also raped and these men face more barriers than women getting help when it happens. The secondary damage to a male sexual assault survivor is great because there are not enough resources for these men. These men often suffer in silence. Many boys are sexually assaulted, too. Violence is a huge problem in our society. We need to protect the most vulnerable among us.

You are a rare, bird, sallylou. Few and far between are those that will admit to having white privledge. Most deny it at the top of their lungs. So refreshing to see such self honesty. I wish we had more.

Speaking of White privileges, I'm a white woman myself. I grew up in the West End section of Richmond. About 20 years ago most residents who lived in the West End section and the Far West End section of Richmond were white. I lived in an apartment in the West End that had many black residents.

The place was crawling with cops. I didn't often see sirens but cops were always around. I know because I had trouble with my car and one of the lights wasn't working. Every time I got into the street, cops would stop me and i had lights replaced every time cops stopped me. It took me a while to realize there was something wrong with the electrical system and I finally got that fixed.

When lighting struck my apt and caused half a million dollars damage, I moved to a new apt that had mostly white residents and I hardly saw any cops there even though it was less than a mile away from my old apt.

Good example. And that is even one of the more glaring examples. Most are much more subtle.

Another example. Once I was having a conversation with two black guys on the street. I'm a white guy. Someone called the cops on them for "harassment." This is the kind of thing that would never happen if they were white.

Yet another example. My wife's family members get suspected of trying to steal all the time. It's a regular occurrence for them. This kind of thing is a foreign concept to most white people.

Absolutely.

ADA doesn't work here. I'm Canadian. Surprise. I appreciate the advice though.

Sorry, no location shown. JennyB is Canadian and very concerned with deaf rights.

Perhaps she would help you.

Another rara avis? Good! The more of those, the more things will be better.

Yes there are such things as white privilege and male privilege. If you can believe that there is a hearing privilege, then white and male privileges are out there, too. Along with others that I can't think of right now.

You are so correct. Which is why I felt the discussion was pertinent to the topic. One must be able to recognize when they are taking advantage of one form of priviledge before they can rightfully complain about another taking advantage of a priviledge.

What $1 for every $.70 I earn isn't good enough for you?

:topic: but...this stat drives me nuts. It is completely untrue when you use it like this. Over a womans life time it can be true due to the time off for maternity leave, less job stability (women are more likely to leave the work force all together and enter again part time or in a different profession), more time is taken off by women to raise children or deal with children. It is a life long statistic and it is because women are more often in the child raising business. Has nothing to do with sexism. In North america a woman and a man in the same job, with the same experience, with the same seniority, make the same amount.

Anyway...

I'm afraid that isn't quite true, JennyB. At least not in America. But I'll be glad to start another thread to discuss the wage disparities based on gender if you guys want to discuss it. I'm always up for discussion of these matters. :)
