I hope you get to ride that route again soon. Why is it called the Shades of Death road? Is that your personal tag for the ride or has it been known by others previously?
 
Most motorcycle tires have tube. Right now, more are becoming tubeless. Newer wheels are specially made for tubeless only. You can modify ur wheel into tubeless. There are website instruction how to do it. Pros and con on tubeless are that.


Pro.. lighter, easier and quicker removal and replacing tires. Smoother rides. Cheaper not having purchase tubes. Easily repaired with inner tire patch or tire repair kit.

Cons.. tubeless tire may come off during hard cornering ( that is for modified wheel only). Deflates quicker. It must be a Mag wheels, not spoked wheel. (Newer spoked wheels now have wide rubber seal.)

My motorcycle wheels are not worth to modify into tubeless cuz its spoked type.

the reason why dirt bikes and dualsport bikes use spoked wheel is because terrain can be rough and there will be lot of flying/bouncing so tubeless tires won't fare very well. That's why only sport bikes & "fat boy" cruisers use tubeless tires.

For tubed tire, the repair will suck bad because you can't just pull the nail out and then plug the hole like tubeless tires. My Metzeler Tourance tires are extremely stiff so forget about performing emergency road repair.

Maybe what I can do is cough up some $$$ for this one - TyreShield. Motorcycle magazine has rated it as 4.5/5 and I have read dozens of good reviews about it in forum.

I have heard of tubed-to-tubeless conversion but IMO - it's not safe. Just stick with its original specification and you'll live longer :)
 
curious - does your free towing service have limited miles it can tow? I have heard that some towing service is free up to XX-miles and then it's $ per mile.
It's free for "reasonable" miles. They don't give a number. TCS thinks it's around 100 but it might be negotiable.

Just like with our auto insurance that provides free windshield and window replacement. You can get it done as many times per year as is "reasonable."

It must be a SC insurance term--"reasonable"--instead of giving an actual number. :dunno:

We get free towing thru our bike insurance, and also thru AMA. We alternate services so it doesn't seem too often to one. :giggle:

From Point K to L - it's actually a street called Shades of Death Road. No idea how it came about but it was weird enough to make it to "Weird NJ" book :lol: And it seems like an appropriate name for this trip. After what just happened... I see an irony...

Shades Of Death Road, sometimes referred to locally as just "Shades", is a two-lane rural road of about 7 miles (11.2 km) in length in central Warren County, New Jersey. It runs in a generally north-south direction through Liberty and Independence townships, then turns more east-west in Allamuchy Township north of the Interstate 80 crossing. South of I-80 it runs alongside Jenny Jump State Forest and offers access to it at several points.[1] The road is the subject of folklore and numerous local legends. and Point B to C is called "Skyline Drive".

Both routes are gentle twisties and quite scenic. Popular routes for Harleys and touring bikes like Goldwing but not for sport bikers because of speed limit and some traffic signals.

Now that I got a gist of their riding preference. If we ride again - I will choose a "Fast n' Furious" route (I-78 and I-81) to PA because it's a wide-open highway and very very scenic with series of nice long curves. I love driving on it as alternative route for I-95 when traveling to south so I wanted to try riding there but I haven't yet cuz the thought of riding there with 650cc is bit discouraging :lol:

However, I'm more of an adventure touring type... meaning - I like to ride on scenic and twisty county/state routes and enjoy life. I don't like to ride it Fast n' Furious. It's not pleasant especially with 650cc engine vibrating the heck out of you and I think it's just plain dang stupid to gamble with your life just for a cheap thrill. Must be me getting old now :lol: But I'd go with this group again only if Jay goes because I want to make sure she gets to live another day to ride.

I agree with you totally. Metzeler tire r good and stiff. Mine is a Metzeler Marathon 880 and yes ofc its stiff too.

About plugging hole on tire. If I had nail on tire, I would go for patch than patching cuz patching can weaken the radial belt inside tire.

for the past couple hours - I've been snatching up some used parts that I've been looking for a long time because brand new parts are very expensive. Fortunately - this guy is parting out his bike (same model as mine) and I've managed to snatch up 2 metal chain guards and 2 supporting plates for rear fork (mine cracked). The actual value for whole thing is about $120. I may get'em all for about $50. We'll see tomorrow cuz the seller's zzzzz.

Got 5 stuff for $65! unbelievable! it was a gold mine cuz everybody was fighting over for dibs. Can't wait to install it on my bike. will post pix as soon as I get'em.

4 years ago, I've seen couple of College kids riding Sport motorcycle with their sling swimsuit and his girlfriend wore bikinis, both not wearing helmets either. It was hot out but not too hot. It's not safe riding "naked". I bet once he dropped his bike, he and his gf will get scarred up with scrapes and bruises. :eek2:

almost got "indirectly" t-boned yesterday by a very large van in Queens. Good thing I stuck with my own rules - "Always leave 2-seconds after green light at intersection"

I was behind a large SUV and the van stopped just few feet away from SUV. I was behind SUV but the van can swivel around and land on me because the van was driving at faster speed.

whew! another day... another riding....

Whew is right! :shock:

Even in my cage, I follow that same rule. Too many people run the red lights.

I saw a guy on his motorcycle yesterday, wearing a helmet (good) but wearing no shirt at all (bad)!

yep. just like those 2 young fellas on Harley when I was going to mall with my mom.

They wore only shorts and helmets :eek3: I remember it was a very very hot day. Sometimes I envy riders wearing shorts because my bike emits a massive amount of heat on right side. Bad for summer, great for winter :lol:
