A Motorcycle Thread About Absolutely Nothing!

Anyone explain me about motorcycle's fuel system.

CARB (carburetor) vs EFI (electronic fuel injection)

I believe EFI is better than CARB for MPG, smooth, and control at any temperature and attitude. I don't understand why old school love carb over EFI.

carburetted bikes are bad emission but pure power like muscle cars. They are not close to 14:7.1 AFR cuz the biker control the carburetor. EFI can create motorcycle's engine hotter temp when they reach close to 15:0.1 AFR ( too lean air/fuel mixture) and stays clean emission. EFI computer controls fuel injection system.
you pick EFI bike, Catty pick carbetted bike. I pick Catty cuz he can make a Daytona party with his part spares in his bike. EFI fump or computer failed , how can you get it. Stuck and miss a lot of harley pussys.

Bought it AS IS, I didn't pick it  I did asked buyer if it's a EFI or Carb. They told me Carb. No biggie. I did hope it was EFI but not. I agree that EFI make engine hotter and it burns cleaner. Later model Volusia have EFI.

Yes, Carb give pure power on engine. I reved up my motorcycle and it go pretty fast. That's why most Carb have jets to mess with. I can tune idle speed to make it run as close as 100 rpm (that's rather slow). My assumption on my motorcycle idle speed now is 400 or 500 rpm which is enough to keep engine idling smoothly.

I've had experience with 1977 toyota corolla engine that have Carb and I use Bosch Platinum sparkplugs. I fiddle carb idle setting that engine ran 50 rpm. Engine rattles but didn't die

I just explain to The Highlander a better picture of the carbetter and EFI. What is Volusia? I never seen the word before. I ll google it later.
I'm familar with a 77 Toyota Corolla before. I think the Corolla 1.6L used OHV camshaft, looks like a hemi head. Am I correct?

Someone told me that EFI made engine run smooth for motorcycle over Carb. I prefer smooth ride at long trip.

No matter about problem, Carb got failed and you stuck. Some thing.

Plus EFI have own fuel injection for each cylinder. That's mean one FI got failed then it got misfire but engine still running.

Carb's fuel injection failed then whole shut down because carb only have one fuel injection for all cylinders which I don't like idea for long trip.

Carb is good for drag racing and nascer only.

Carb's fuel injection that you menthioned is no sense but I understand you are talking about the throttle body injection (TBI). The shape of a TBI, looks like a carburetor. Yeah the engine will not run when TBI failed. Another name is Port Fuel Injection (PFI) like today's vehicles have SFI (Sequential Fuel Injection), the engine will run with one or two injectors failed and create rough running.

It's actually Suzuki Intruder Volusia
Suzuki Intruder 800 Volusia Motorcycle - Road Test & Review - Motorcycle Cruiser

Remember there are two Intruders, Suzuki Intruder (non-Volusia) have skinny front tire and shorter body with V-Twin (they're ugly!!). I happened to walk by Intruder and I can't believe it's SMALLER!! Glad I didn't get it!! Suzuki Intruder Volusia is bigger, fatter, and longer and meaner body (more harley like) that put Intruder into shame.

EEEKK, Ugly. Im surprised to see a Volusia, looks like HD. I think I saw it last weekend at the gas station, though it was a new HD. Thk for share the infro. I didnt google it.

Hey Guys!!

I passed Riding Test today!!!!!

There are 4 part of tests (Kansas Style) Cost: $41.50

1. 30 ft straight line (double painted line with blank center, 1 ft apart). --- Passed
2. Slalom-- 5 cones-- Passed (Dang close call! funny part will xplain below)
3. 30 ft straight then stop to painted "box" on end--- Passed
4. Emergency braking-- Speed up to 15mph then stop quickly once passed "stop" marking--- Passed

On Slalom part, I had no problem on 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th cones but had a close call on 5th cone. I had to turn left hard (fork hit its "stop" limit) and front tire just barely missed 1/4th inch to base of cone then turned right hard, Guilty of charged, I tromped my right feet to ground to steady my bike and moved on. The Examinator did not see it because he was watching where left side of my bike while I was turning hard right **Whew!!!!!** I turned around and head to Examinator and asked him if I have to do over or what?? He said you passed and let's do next test. In my mind "Whattt!! :eek2: OK!!".

After last test ending with loud rear tire squeal on pavement, he told me "You Passed and you need to go in and have DL picture taken". I lit up big grin on DL pix then I got a DL Printout with "CM" which mean "Class C for car and Class M for motorcycle". I will get hard copy DL next week from Topeka, KS

I head out and load my bike to trailer then drove home to drop off my bike then head back to rental place then dropped off trailer then headed back home. I changed my clothes to work clothes. Then I jumped into bike and rode to Parkway at 60mph then when I arrived to work, My boss heard thumping noise then few min I came in. He knew I brought a motorcycle. After work, I rode to I-435 West-North at 60-65mph. I was a little leery but not worried because It was after 8pm and getting dark and there were fewer cars. It was rather windy but my bike steady through the wind.

Yuppeee Now that I can go anywhere!!

Yup, It sure look like HD, If you ever park Volusia among line of HD, you'll have hard time finding Volusia out of HD group when you get back. Better put something sticker or remote control blinker so you can find it.

I was getting alot of respect from bikers. They thumbed up, waved, or nodded at me every time I passed them. Lot of drivers been ogling at my sexy bike as it were sexy woman to them

Whatever it call since we don't learned enough about Carb from class since they are outdated.

EFI/SFI FAILED - no towing need, you still drive to home.

TBI FAILED - Towing need, you have to waiting for an hour or so and pay towing's bill.

Which you like better? I pick EFI/SFI over TBI for daily drive and I don't care about how easy to repair.

from the best of my knowledge - a lot of people can fix it themselves if disabled in middle of the road or somewhere. and plus..... they are experienced mechanic so they can fix it themselves.

most insurance carriers have towing service included anyway.

You can't repair any injection when it's failed. It's need to replace it. It's common problem.

Only if you carry extra part and tool with you then you are good to go.

good! a very smart rider! every smart rider has a repair kit. for parts - one is usually resourceful and can usually find spare part at mechanic's garage or somewhere.

a motorcycle with EFI - you'll have an electrical failure anyway somewhere in the bike. hears it all the time.

Hey wait a minute. Are you talking about the TBI/EFI in motorcycles? Im confused it.

Hey Those who have cruiser motorcycle.

I have questions about saddlebags.

There are two type, one is Throw Over or Other is a bolt on rear fender. Which do you think is best to get?

I wanted to have saddlebags so I can carry 128oz water bottle, groceries ect. while riding cruiser

I found many in Ebay. Here's one example
7 PC GENUINE LEATHER MOTORCYCLE LUGGAGE SADDLEBAGS NEW: eBay Motors (item 170537387844 end time Oct-07-10 11:50:12 PDT)

They're cheap but my issue is that would it stay on bike on highway speed. Also Suzuki Volusia or Boulevard must have rear fender side saddlebag support bracket to prevent saddlebag from getting caught into spoke of wheel (remember that it have internal rear shock system rather than shock absorber on both sides. Look nicer). They're expensive and runs about $50 and up. There are one that selling from Hong Kong for $25 but its side bracket have offset neck. I don't want it, just straight one.

You would need those saddle bag supports for sure.. one thing to be wary of is exhaust clearance. ive seen some say its ok within an inch but id rather have more clearance than that. I dont have saddle bags i have a sissy bar bag. its a large nylon backback with a large compartment on it that slips over the sissy bar and has buckles and straps to tighten on the backrest. can be used as a backback too. i looked online at the site of the company that makes it which is an outdoors company but they didnt have the exact one i have but had one up similar. the only difference i can tell in the one on the site and the one i have is mine has the extra set up to slide if over the sissy bar and mine is black.

IMO - you definitely do not want to skimp on cheap saddle mount. My mount was expensive yes but at least it's "bulletproof-tough" for life and I can fit handful of different saddlebags on it - both hard and soft bags. It is able to handle abuses and crashes. My mount has about 1" clearance from dual exhaust pipes which is why my saddlebags have heat shield.

so things to consider:
1. if your saddlebag is made of nylon or polyester or low-grade Cordura but no protection from heat (aka "heat shield")... then it's utterly useless. it will just melt away
2. I avoid saddlebag made out of nylon/polyester because weather + sun over time will destroy it in short time. It will make the material very brittle so make sure it's made of high-grade material like 1000+ Denier Cordura
3. saddlebags especially for cruiser bike - it's best to go with leather. it's tough and cool! you can never go wrong with that! but of course - you have to maintain the leather which is quick and easy.

some pix of cruiser + saddlebag I found....
