read,

Perhaps you misunderstood and now you see your error. ;) I put those quotes after yours to show that you were wrong. I did not say they were dandy doo nor did I profess not to care. Quite the opposite. If anything, I was irritated at news agencies making this more about their profits and about the US than looking at what was really happening.

If you look around here, you will see that I have admitted being wrong time and again.

In this particular case, I feel that you:
  1. initially did not take the radiation threat seriously
  2. ridiculed those of us that did
  3. after it became apparent that things had gone badly, began to ignore that and steer this thread into a "get to know me" thread
  4. when confronted, grouped several different posts together and played the teacher

You are probably a nice lady. I am a very difficult man at times. That is our lot in life.
I am done playing this version of "hijack the Japan thread" game.

I did take the threat seriously. I did not think we needed to head for a fallout shelter, as Steinhaur suggested. That I did not take seriously. I ridiculed those who incited fear. That is irresponsible IMO.

I am a nice lady. I am a nice teacher. I also believe in having a critical eye.

A comment about how I didn't understand all the nuances of Human Bio with a joke that I cheated is not steering the thread. I was responding to an observation someone made about themselves. "I took a biology class, so I understand this DNA mutation stuff." "Oh, me too, but I may have cheated...can you clarify this statement regarding radiation?" Who derailed the thread? Not Dixie and I.

Threads are only derailed when you want them to be, and clearly someone wanted it to be.

There is recent news that Reactor 2 may have a meltdown. Ok...what is the worse case scenario here?

more contamination, plunging economy...? spike in sushi prices?
the reason why people aren't as fearful about radiation poisoning spreading all over the globe is for a few reasons.
one, chernobyl was a case of nuclear material going up into the air -it exploded and just shot out. that can't happen in the Japanese plants.
two, we can't see radiation, but we can test for it. so things like testing of air, food, and water helps us make decisions and further protect people.

The world cracks in half, then splits resulting into a downward spiral to the sun.

Don't worry, we'll be gone before we even touch the sun.

There may be spikes in the prices of all the computer chips for all of our electronic gadgets since a major factory there isnt producing the supply due to the constant aftershocks. Every time there is an aftershock, the factory halts all production and even if there are no aftershocks, it seems that the employers are much more concerned with the citizens than making a profit. As a result, the supply may not meet the demand in a few month hence the prices spiking up.

Or so what I saw on the news....unless it was sensantionalized.

At least it would be a quick death, not the slow death that some people experienced during atomic bombings in WWII.

Shel, I'd like to respond to your post about the economy, but I was already chided about worrying about something stupid like how people put food on the table. Sorry.

As far as abombs go...if we get nuked...I hope the damn thing explodes right over my house. Because I'd rather be vaporized.

nada. just a short-term loss.

like I said.... Chernobyl.... 3-Miles Island.... we forgot about it already. we moved on.

Yeah, but not the people who were affected by the fallout.

yes sensationalized because news agencies know how much public hate nuclear power. easy money right there.

beside - we've had spikes in all fields - oil spike. corn spike. wheat spike. etc. it always level off in a short while.

Damn! Just read the thread since my last post and wow, my jaw drops...

Yeah, but not the people who were affected by the fallout.
*sarcasm time*
Hey, I never met Ivan Dyingoff. Who cares?
BTW, you should see the jerk that cut in front of me at Safeway!

I was under the impression that people hated having to be evacuated due to radiation fallout (which, by the way, has actually happened, and not because of "sensationalist journalism").

I was also under the impression that radiation is very very bad for the environment (or at least, some so called nucular injuneer told me so).

I guess all those sensationalists had it wrong?

You guys got to look on the bright side of things; now there is a new market for Japan - glow in the dark dairy products.
