8.9 quake in Japan triggers massive tsunamis

I already contacted USAID. They have my contact information if they need my services.

I have done home construction, remodelling, heavy equipment operation (front end loaders, tractors, etc.) before my college years (and a little bit afterwards too).

Most of the debris is going to have to be moved with heavy machinery then burned/processed.

from USAID site that led to CIDI site - Volunteering After a Disaster
What you need to know
CIDI appreciates your interest in learning more about helping others in times of crisis and disaster. We receive thousands of calls each year expressing the desire to volunteer for international disaster relief assignments. The following will help clarify some common misconceptions about such opportunities and provides links to additional resources and information.

Volunteer Opportunities for Disaster Relief are Extremely Limited
The reality is that volunteer opportunities for international disaster relief are extremely limited, and people without disaster relief experience are generally not selected for relief assignments. Candidates with the greatest chance of being selected have fluency in the language of the disaster-stricken area, prior disaster relief experience, and expertise in technical fields such as medicine, communications, logistics, or water/sanitation engineering. In many cases, these professionals are already available in-country.

Most agencies require at least ten years of prior experience, as well as several years of experience working overseas. It is not unusual to request that volunteers make a commitment to spend at least three months working on a particular disaster. While offers by individuals, college service clubs, church groups and others to drive trucks, set up tents, and feed children are well-intentioned, they are typically not accepted. Local volunteers and even disaster victims themselves are often available for such assignments, and those impacted by a disaster benefit from being actively involved in their own relief activities.

It’s important to know that once a relief agency accepts a volunteer, they are responsible for that volunteer's well-being, including food, shelter, health and security. Untrained volunteers can actually do more harm than good. Resources are particularly strained during a disaster, and another person without the necessary technical skills and experience can be a considerable burden to an ongoing relief effort.

Potential volunteers should also keep in mind that relief work is a profession, and that it takes a unique individual who can work effectively in incredibly difficult conditions.

exactly what I was telling you in my post #608.

that's the reality. as reba said - your heart is in the right place but there's a reason why it's stringent.

Warning people is not fear mongering. The radiation levels are soaring ... the pacific jet stream WILL blow it across the Pacific. Fukushima has melted down. There are 4 other Nuclear Reactors in trouble. That means, we are ALL in trouble.

You guys, it's awesome that he's willing to risk his life in a major nuclear radiation fallout.

Major fallout indeed. In Japan.

No Health Risk; Experts Say As Trace Amounts of Radiation Reach California | Breaking Story

If it wasn't major, the Pacific Jetstream wouldn't have pushed it over the Pacific Ocean.

The chances of any radioactive plume reaching the United States are “close to zero,” Jacqueline Williams, program director for radiation medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Center for Biophysical Assessment and Risk Management Following Irradiation, told HealthDay earlier this week.

I certainly hope this is a different panel of experts than the ones claiming a meltdown was impossible

RADIOACTIVE emissions from the stricken Fukushima power plant have been detected thousands of kilometres away in eastern Russia and the west coast of the United States, with experts predicting the radiation will travel south tonight.

Meteorologists predict the wind direction will change today, taking dangerous emissions across Tokyo, 250 kilometres to the south.

The area immediately surrounding the Fukushima plant has been evacuated due to high levels of radiation.

Dr Romeo F. Quijano, professor at the University of the Philippines-Manila's department of pharmacology and toxicology, advised Filipinos to be on alert.

''There is already a significant breach in the reactor core containment facilities, both immediate and secondary,'' he said.

''There is no doubt that significant amounts of radioactivity had already been released into the open environment, exposing thousands of people within a several kilometres radius. It is highly probable that this radiation pollution will worsen in the next few days and will most likely reach the Philippines.''

Well, dear, I was 100 per cent sure you were backtracking, considering our exchange in this thread, but if that's your position now, who cares? Trace amounts of radiation hit the US after Chernobyl, too, and it wasn't the least bit dangerous. Like I've been saying, no need for anyone to dive to a fallout shelter. While the unlikely happened - and I think we covered this - there's nothing for the US to worry about in terms of radiation. So it's all bueno over here.

Japan, however...not so much.

I was almost certain you were going to twist what I said in an attempt to backpeda1 what you have been saying:

1) No need to worry about Fukushima, it won't melt down
2) Fukushima has not melted down (when it did)
3) There will be no major fallout from Fukushima (there was)
4) No radiation will be picked up from the jetstream (refer to 1,2,3)
5) Any suggestion that you are wrong is tin foil hattery

Don't backpedal now ....

Please quote where I said that and your proof. I'd be happy to admit if I made an erroneous statement. :dunno2:

There have been a few other forum members that have been pointing out your statements. It turned into a flame war and you got banned.

I am not taking the bait this round.

Have you even considered that the radiation levels that are currently being detected may have been from the first explosion?

The Fukushima reactor leak is multiple times worse than Chernobyl. There IS reason to be concerned.

TEPCO Director Weeps After Finally Admitting The Truth About Fukushima Disaster: Radiation Leak Is Serious Enough To Kill People

My questions are ....

1) Is the reactor still leaking?
2) Have they gotten the other reactors under control?

um... do you always cherry-pick random google search to find anything that supports your delusional claim?

that site... wow lol - Elite Puppet President Obama Starts Another Illegal War, Rep. Charles Rangel Calls For Draft

Ok, so you admit you are wrong. I said that if you can go ahead and show me I was incorrect...I'd own up to it. I'm a big girl. So far, you haven't been able to. So I'm sorry, but you have no basis for your claims.

Steinhauer - Since it appears you're very well-versed in this by being an armchair googlist.

I haven't been following this closely, been busy, ya know.. Up in Vail and a couple of nice resorts, yeah.

I have a question for you though. Whats the average levels of radiation (in Sieverts, please) in the area of Fukushima?

I'd like to know.

Thanks.

Ah ... delusional? See ... there you go with ad hominem attacks again.

When you can't debate FACTS, you make them up as you go along

Well GEE .... maybe I should of used sensationalist news articles? That would have made you happy I am sure

ad hominem? nope not needed for you. it is a fact.

fact - you are delusional.
fact - things you claim do not exist.
fact - you have been repeatedly corrected (ie. DoD contractors you speak of in Libya thread were not humanitarian workers. they were not contracted for humanitarian aid either)
fact - all your source you provided are from  site
fact - you raff. you rose.

He's attacking your source. And I'd go easy on Jiro about "making up facts". It's not like he tried to reinvent the Richter scale or anything. :giggle:

Actually, he turned it into a Japanese Religious Scale .... you relent it was I who did that.

Just saying .....
