8.9 quake in Japan triggers massive tsunamis

I had opinions. :dunno: Rubbed some of the cool kids the wrong way.

You cannot rub me the wrong way unless you post spam. Opinions vary. I expect that. I never report anything but spammers. Why report you when I can either beat you down with words, or simply ignore you?

I feel it is my duty to again mention that this thread has very little to do with your studying. It has very little to do with your teaching methods. It has plenty to do with a certain crisis in Japan, one which you "poo-poo'd" previously. Despite the turn in events, you still seem to ignore the obvious; that people are dying from radiation poisoning over there. The only recent comment you have given regarding the intended direction of this thread appears to be how it will affect your purchasing power. Where do you find the blinders to ignore the deaths of these Fukushima 50 and the unknown others that will suffer from this "partial" meltdown? Why have you avoided backing up your outrageous statements of a few days ago; that everything was A-OK over there?

I am still waiting, but here is what you would say: "It doesn't exist."

As you were.

Tiptoe through the window
By the window, that is where I'll be
Come tiptoe through the tulips with me

Oh, tiptoe from the garden
By the garden of the willow tree
And tiptoe through the tulips with me

Knee deep in flowers we'll stray
We'll keep the showers away
And if I kiss you in the garden, in the moonlight
Will you pardon me?
And tiptoe through the tulips with me

Either you can't read or you just like to stir shit. I'm going to assume the latter.

I said these speculations and some crappy reporting is sensationalist.

 I didn't say I was more concerned about the fish than I was humans. I was curious about what would happen from an economic standpoint...because I teach it in high school.

I do care about human life. I do care about Japan. It's actually one of my favorite places to study regional history. I'm just not going to panic about an unlikely nuclear meltdown right now. That shows maturity, not immaturity.

When this stuff was first posted, it was all speculation. If something changes - and it's dependent on so many factors - then I'll adjust my concern accordingly.

When this story first broke, everyone was like, OH MY GOD! ITS GONNA HIT THE US! runnnnnnnnn and what did we get? WHAT CRAZY BIG SENSATIONALIST NEWS HAPPENED?

Some big waves.

Look at the news! It's so sensationalist. pfh already pointed out that even credible news sources were getting a little bit drama-happy.

Big news is big news, yes. But I'm still waiting for the headline that says "nuclear fallout unlikely". but maybe that doesn't get people as jazzed.

Thousands just died in a round of earthquakes. Does anyone seem to notice that? No...it's like people are *hoping* for something else to happen. I'm not saying people here are hoping, but no, right now my concern isn't about an unlikely nuclear fallout, it's more about people who are currently stranded, hungry, injured, sick, etc.

Warning people is not fear mongering. The radiation levels are soaring ... the pacific jet stream WILL blow it across the Pacific. Fukushima has melted down. There are 4 other Nuclear Reactors in trouble. That means, we are ALL in trouble.

:squint: And that's some creative math you have going on there...

That particular Nuclear facility in Fukushima was designed to withstand an 8.2 earthquake. Not a 9.1 (its been upgraded again). The Richter Scale is measured in algorithms so the quake that hit was nearly a 1,000 times stronger than the engineers worst case scenario (an 8.2). Followed up with a Tsunami ... the Nuclear Facility was just not designed to withstand a natural catastrophe of that proportion. It was probably "unthinkable" at the time it was built.

Just hope for the best. It is a mess.

It was "almost" ten times worse. Not 1,000. A 5.0 earthquake is 10x than a 4.0 earthquake.

and so forth and so on. I wasn't the only one who objected to the reporting and interpretation of those reports (reba, pfh, jiro, dixie, etc...)

*shrug* But if you want to continue to flame and aggravate, I guess that's your business.

I feel better. :)

As far as I know, all of the teachers I know have never cheated but then again, it is just to my knowledge.

However, yes I do know a few teachers who shouldnt be in the field of education due to their poor work ethics.

Clapping

It's impossible for me to cheat on any exam....Morals preclude such an endeavor

Well I might let someone take my prostate exam for me......

Laughing..I applaud you morals AND your sense of humor. Midnight♥♥♥

 Nevermind. I get what you're about, even more. You can post all you want 'til you're blue in the face, you won't change my mind. Frankly, I don't care. No need for you to waste your precious $600 breath on me.

WOW Alley Cat...I so agree...when did the topic switch from the suffering in Japan to 'all about the Oracle" TALK ABOUT SAD....I intend no offense but my god is she for real? lol....I could care less what she has to say about anything. But she is really annoying me. sorry.. Can we not get back on track to the original topic ???? We are discussing a nation "on it's knees"
please let's not diminish their devestation and loss...

I see you skimmed right over how the richter scale is measured in algorithms ... oh well, nothing new here. Same trolling methods as usual.

PS - maybe you cheated on that test too?

The measurements in the richter scale measures the seismic energy released from a quake. An 8.2 quake ( as measured by the richter magnitude scale) was the maximum shaking amplitude Fukushima was designed to withstand.

The first reported measurement was 8.9 - it was then updated to a 9.0 and some reports are saying it was upgraded to a 9.1

The Richter Scale uses a 10 base logarithmic scale. Those "tiny" algorithmic differences between an 8.9 and a 9.0 are in the thousands.

Just to give a example .... the difference between an 8.2 quake and an 8.9 is NOT .7 - an 8.9 quake is 5x more powerful than an 8.2 (not 7x) - the seismic energy is equated by algorithms and the energy released is measured in the thousands

Why explain. There is little chance it will be understood.

Sigh. Some people here can barely read. Whyyyy do I expect anyone to follow basic math?

Wave difference between a 1.0 and a 2.0 = 10x
2.0 and 3.0 = 10x
4.0 and 5.0 = 10x

and so forth and so on...

8.0 and 9.0 = 10x

it's always ten times bigger than the previous. :dizzy:

NOT A THOUSAND TIMES! An earthquake a thousand times bigger than a 8.0 would have wrecked the Earth!

Difference between 7.0 and 8.0 = 10 x1 = 10
Difference between 7.0 and 9.0 = 10x10 = 100
Difference between 7.0 and 10.0 = 10x10x10 = 1,000

(If you want to calculate energy, you multiply 32 instead of 10, so the difference between 7.0 and 8.0 would be 32x the energy, and between 7.0 and 9.0 would be 1024)

<headsmack> Use some sense.

*edit When you start saying things like "bigger", "stronger", etc., you can really confuse people.

methinks you did some googling after my last post

Let's go Red Sox...... Clap clap clapclapclap.

Surprisingly not the most :Offtopic: post in this thread

so you want to contribute to it?

If he wants to keep talking about me cheating on an online course years ago, I guess we can point out that a Geography teacher who cheated on a human biology course still knows her geography....:wiggle:
