Having said that, I agree with many here who say that speech is not required to learn reading and writing or any other subject for that matter.

Actually one of the BIGGEST reasons why a lot of hearing parents pursue oral only is b/c they think that it (and mainstreaming) provides a better education.

Sad but true. There's nothing wrong with mainstream schools. They serve a useful purpose, for the most part. It's the oral only approach that's hurt a lot of deaf kids.
