Why Deaf films failed?[VID]

The reason I posted this is because I liked some of many rants he made. But on the whole, I agree with him that none of Deaf films are on par with those films from Hollywood or Bollywood or elsewhere.
 
I don't know what to say. I have never seen ASL or deaf films before. But it's not only that we have problem, a lot of hearing films failed too. It's tough to get in. There's thousands of films that never made to nationwide theatre. And foreign films aren't that popular in US. I guess ASL is like a foreign language to hearing people because there's a very low percent of hearing people who understand ASL or prefer subtitles.
 
I agree with him too, I've seen some deaf films that are so boring not like other films that I've watched are exciting and interesting. He got a good point there, stop the laziness and work harder. :thumb:
 
Well, he's very passionate, for sure. I understand what he's saying, but I assume part of the problem is that most deaf films would--if totally with deaf actors and such--perhaps be a niche film. So you're talking about basically, what is to most hearing people, a "foreign langauge" film in that those that aren't signers would need to read captions, like silentwolfdog said. Certainly it's possible to do that, but will you get a budget from investors that will allow professional writing, actors, camera work, props, directors, etc?

It's possible to do it all low budget, and I guess what he's saying is that it just needs to really be worked on. I hope he succeeds in his own efforts. His passion will help.

Well... the only only only successful foreign film that made $300 million or
more... is "Passion" made by Gibson.

These Deaf actors that the Deaf filmmakers are using... are NOBODY.
And plus they can't act.

Even Marlee Matlin doesn't have larger fans as Angelina Jolie or Denzel Washington...
 
My son is heavily involved in the production of a weekly TV show here. He has a type of schizophrenic illness and is on a disability pension.

This show is shown on a minority channel and seems to do fairly well as it is in the prime timeslot for the night.

I am amazed how much work actually goes into a show, no matter how minor it is and it is a credit to whoever gets there. It took my son and his producer nearly 3 years to get from conception to airtime. It happens to be great therapy for him too.

Hopefully it will get him operating in the real world full time?

Through this show, he has networked himself in with the guys that created the "Matrix" and "Pulp Fiction" movies and many others. Not the stars, but the men of action behind the scenes.

It seems that it's not the disability, but what you do with it that is the thing.

I am proud of him for his achievements.
 
I went to the film school and it is so hard to do film...
with hearing actors... I didn't know if they didn't know their words.

I don't know if your son has a hearing problem, Nomad.

But it is hard...

production? you mean like producing someone film... of course that is easy..

But making a film as a film director is hard.

Nobody wants to pay their hard working money on Deaf Film...

We will never make million of dollars... off of deaf film.

Poor little me I am deaf, please pay $10 to watch my deaf film...

Nope,,, that won't happen.

We need to face reality and get other jobs that is simple and not
complicated...
 
umm... I had a good friend where i go to school with

she is still in school in california.. becomeing a filming director.. so far she has done an awesome job.. yeah shes deaf.

so i feel she will success with those hollywood someday in near future :D

she had already made couple of few short movies.. some with deaf actor some without deaf actor. and i think she will success.. only because she's still learning hard and gaining more experiences.

Well, the video is gone. And, are you sure it is "Why Deaf Films Fail" and not "Why Deaf Film Festivals Fail"?

and refused to talk to Gary and refused to let him work with their film
projects...

I feel that going to the Deaf Film Festival is too expensive....
The plane ticket, Hotel fees, foods, and transportation, I only went
once and dislike it. And plus the Deaf films were not good. I spent
over $1,000....
I wish I use that money to go to DisneyWorld... that would be more fun.

what makes you think its a "me" country? i'm sure there's supportive, help, ideas sharing.. doesn't it hurt to try to email her if you find her website.

I don't think it is fair to single out Deaf film festival failures. I think it applies to many Deaf-run organizations. Before you jump on my hands, know this: I speak as a workshop coordinator for 2 different Deaf organizations and have seen where both failed.

Deaf people in general do not know how to commit and follow through! Why do you think Voc. Rehab. counselors have been not so eager to help Deaf clients?? Because so many of them don't even follow through on commitment and expect the world served to them on a silver platter without working hard for it.

Another reason, too many people run organizations for the name-recognition and popularity contests. I admire those who actually put in tears, sweat, blood, arm and leg into their organization. But those who just sit back and do nothing, filing their fingernails and claiming they did the work, they're a hindrance and a cancer in the organization!

Once you get committed members who are genuinely interested in the organizations' welfare and well-being, then it is a guarantee the organization would be successful. Successful organizations equal successful, planned events!

So, many festivals or workshops fail because their organizations weren't on the ball into making it work!
