When you became independent, how did you feel?

After living in a house and basically being home-schooled for nearly 5 years, and then moving to Chicago in 2005, becoming independent took a LOT of getting used to, and mind you, I was happy to be in Chicago, but I wasn't used to doing as I pleased, and literally had no clue how to move on with my life until 2010, when I moved to Rogers Park, and that's when reality hit me-- I REALLY needed to get a move on if I wanted to have any chance of survival. Now it's been nearly 4 years since that happened, and things have improved-- in some ways. Other ways? Still got some work to do, but for the better part, I am capable of doing a bunch of stuff on my own, but I still need to learn a few things. Eventually I'll get it, but when? That I don't know.

I also pay my own bills without relying on my parents or anyone else. I also don't go looking for trouble, either-- it usually finds ME first. I'm a peaceable guy, but if someone irritates me, I just tune it out (Thanks to my being an actor in theater previously).

Enough about that. What did you feel when you realized you were fully on your own, and could do as you pleased?

I classify being independent as

Living on your own, unsupported in ANY way. ( Ex: Having a job and paying all your own bills in full on your own, with no assistance ) *Social Security or other wages earned are acceptable of course, also being married*

I don't classify being independent being allowed to "do as you please" and stay out late... Independence involves responsibility... Something I can't see someone having who classifies it as staying out late and doing as you please, plain and simple.

I agree ... but wasn't going to say it ... if I called the cops cause my heat went out they'd laugh at me like there was no tomorrow ...

Some things I just don't do-- perhaps my days as being an actor in theater taught me that certain things were unwise to do-- they certainly taught me to stay out of trouble. And I have a desire to get back into acting again some day. I miss the stage. I'm pretty good, too.

Pffft, I'll say it! :D  Blunt honesty is my thing, ya know? :laugh2:

Seriously though, I'd get a charge and go to jail for calling them for that too, most of us would...

Elated, but the world has its own pleasantries..

I'm glad someone was elated... I was sad... :laugh2: I miss the good old days of living with the parents and having no worries... *sigh* So sad... I do not enjoy the days of " OMGERD, I forgot my car insurance was due today! OMGERD, Florida is a jerk and suspends your license for lapsing insurance for a day and sends you a warning letter to go to the DMV and prove insurance!!! OMGERD!!!" Luckily for me, now I have become far more organized than when I was 18. :P

Really? Glad it wasn't so bad with additional fees and all! Did your premiums go up? I was registered under my father's military plan til college graduation, but never lapsed on payments. God Mew!

Being independent means that I need to have a ruler handy. People would ask me for frame size of bikes. I need to be ready with a ruler and measure accordingly. It doesn't cost much or take a lot of room, but it's a life saver for me.

Naw,

it doesn't raise your premiums thankfully. :P You just get a letter of death saying if you don't show them proof of insurance in 30 days they will suspend your license. ( For a $250.00 fee, they can re-instate it :laugh2:, $500 the second time, $750 the third and $1000 every time after! ) So, it wasn't suspended, just missed a payment by a day and went and fixed it. :P That was when I was 18 and first moved out and was all over the place! Haven't missed a payment on anything since that scare! :ugh: :P

I was independent since I moved to Virginia for college.... and still living independent back home. my parents are living in Korea. it wasn't really hard for me to adjust. I guess I adapt pretty quick and my parents raised me well and taught me a lot. all bills are paid on time. I keep my home in order. I cook pretty good. I have a good job. I take care of my dog well. all is well.

my brother, on the other hand,...... is an utter useless. a major constant pain in the ass to live with. although he's very good at what he's doing at work and make a very good earning but he's useless in cooking... useless in housekeeping... useless in basic home responsibility... everything he touches... it breaks. he really definitely needs a live-in maid.

one thing he's good at is... MONEY. so he handles my 401k and I guess that's where I'm useless at

Been independent for 20 years now...don't know what it feels like to be dependent on parents anymore.

I don't think about it too much. I should be thankful that I can take care of myself as opposed to some people who are completely dependent on others and cant get out of their situations.

I never was an actor in a theater. I wonder how I stayed out of trouble. :hmm:

I more free now than ever, training days gone, having children and anchored by them(altho I do anything go back in time see them as little again)gone...money allowing I just do my thing travel not answer to anyone but ill health dogs me and easy put self in prison with confidence issues...
if you do acting then I would think easier for you....put life into different compartments then expect somethings to cock up others not, that nature of life

That's because all of my time was spend rehearsing, traveling, and doing the actual acting. The season goes 6-7 months, and takes up a great deal of time. Actors/actresses do not have time to cause trouble, because we're so focused on making the show a success. That itself taught me how to stay out of trouble, and I use that today, even though I'm not active on any stage.

I dont know if it is called independence but respsonibility. I rather be irresponsible though. BUT i gotta do it to survive. LOL

I left home at age 19. over 20 years, that I take care of myself, so long. :dunno2:

what kind of trouble would you get in if you didn't do acting?

Im like "half independent" becuase i pay for my school and i pay rent to my parents, i pay my medical bills, work and get myself places, even if i cant drive. But i know that if i needed it they would still help me out. But ill be out of my house by May so maybe then ill know what its like yo be independent.
