Hubby's work van and our Jeeps can't be converted to diesel.

You mean my 1968 VW bug convertible wasn't enough? :giggle:

Does 40 gal. of vegetable oil go the same distance as 40 gal. of gasoline?

If so, that would last TCS about a day and a half. I don't think it would be convenient.

Go the same distance? No. By volume the diesel fuel is much better than biodiesel in terms of energy density.

I'm not talking about biodiesel. I'm talking straight up veggie oil.

40 Gallons of veggie oil would get you about the equivalent of 50 gallons of diesel fuel or thereabouts. Depends on the method you use to convert it to fuel. (Some people mix it with a thinning agent. Others use a heating system to thin. Both methods will increase the total amount of fuel) Diesel can get you anywhere from 35-55mpg. Depends on the vehicle.

I've not done it personally, but I know people who have. It's time consuming and can be messy, but once you get an efficient system down for filtering the used oil that you get from restaurants, it's probably worth it? :dunno: I don't have a car anymore, and I don't need it. Life in the big city. Ohhh yeah!

35-55 MPG??? I have never had a truck get more than 22 MPG. Which is still better than 12 but....

I think that he was talking about normal coupe and sedan cars, not trucks.

Yeah, I was talking about just a basic car on a diesel engine. 35-55 is pretty typical. My father's ex girlfriend drove a Jetta that got 55mpg. My brother had an old Mercedes 300D that got about 45. I guess it all just varies on the configuration, weight, etc.

A work Van? Probably on the low end of the spectrum, but certainly better than 22mpg?

Maybe, :dunno: Mine were F-250's and 350's so they drank gas but still got 10MPG better than regular gas. The big advantage to diesel was that I got the same MPG even when hauling/towing fairly heavy loads. Plus a good diesel engine will go 200,000 pretty easily. Hard to order at a drive thru though.

Yeah probably. I think TCS drives a work van though. I could be wrong.
Yes, he does. A very heavy, loaded full-size commercial van. Also, his equipment runs off the running engine even when the van isn't traveling.

The biodiesel is made from part of vegetable oils. I don't think 100% veggie oil may work with newer diesel motors. Only for old diesel motor without electric fuel injection

Depend on year of F250, driver skill, and transmission (5 speeds or 6 speeds are better than 4 speeds for MPG)

Semi-truck with load is around 5 MPG.

Way to go people! Everyone does a great job at hijacking this thread to let it stay off topic. Maybe AD took lessons from MM and learned to hide the serious issues. In the meantime American is going down the drain a fast as veg. oil at a fast food place. Is Obama is re-elected it will be because that the American people want just that....down the drain.
