Whats the fastest way to become fluent in ASL??

Go to any deaf event, deaf church, many local coffee clubs, all the websites above plus lifeprint.com, and dont stop. Take all classes given at schools, churches, community centers, colleges, jr. colleges, adult and continuing ed... aw, you get the idea. Sign, sign, sign and learn more. Go to you tube and watch deaf people sign, OIC videos, you will catch on. Deaf comedy was good for me. You tube has lots.
Dont stop and dont give up. Good luck, and make it fun.

:D Whats the fastest way to become fluent in ASL??

I am taking courses and I am constantly trying to improve my vocabulary by watching some videos online, but what are some of the most effective ways to become fluent?? I know immersing yourself in the culture would be a good move, but I don't know where to begin in my city?? Tips anyone??

The fastest way to become fluent in ASL is to be born deaf and be desperate to communicate.

Acquire Deaf/Hoh, CODA, and interpreter friends. And practice a lot. Finger spell everything you see or think of. Sign whatever you see or think of. Sign what you're saying, or if this is distracting to other people, think of how to sign it in your head.

ASL keeps popping up in my life, so I made the conscious decision to pursue it. I'm taking college classes beginning in January, am attending Silent Coffe Houses, and am practicing by signing to the radio and TV, using whatever I know at the time; Signs or fingerspelling. I also visit Deaf video sites and try to sign along with them.

I have noticed an increase in my abilities just over the past couple of months.

From a hearing person who is learning, I say immersion!!!

Power to ya!

I would sign to myself. LOL I didn't care if anyone knew what I was saying. I was making sure I felt comfortable doing the signs I learned......either through books, the internet or (more recently) the local community college classes I took.

I sign to myself all the time..lol, I actually sign more fluently alone than when I'm in the presense of a deaf person.

I chalk it up to nerves. :mad2:

I have been signing to myself for many years. But when I go to deaf events I become HORRIBLY shy. And I end up feeling like I am eavesdropping.

Have some beer too. There are some exotic bars that I could suggest you to go to in NYC that will serve you some gooder beer.
