What weird food did you eat when you were a kid?

Peanut Butter and pickle sandwiches. Fried bologna and apple sandwiches. Sauteed oranges and onions over eggs. Fried hot dogs with boysenberry jam.

oh I forgot! White bread & mayo sandwiches w/ a dash of salt & pepper.

that I don't eat anymore LOL

I used to eat Fizzies tablets.

To make your own sodas right? I didn't eat them, but they used to be in some childrens TV dinners when I was a kid I think.

At least I remember them being made on nights if I was lucky enough to get a TV dinnner.

And those were a lot better than the ones they make for kids today.

Mud Pies....(from real mud)...cucumber sandwiches w/mayo, (which I still like). We also ate armadillo, squirrel, racoon...whatever my father could shoot and a lot of red-fin pike and catfish. Lots of Salmon & rice at my grandfather's.

You are lucky. Armadillo can give you leprosy. :hmm:

I remember at one of the Boy Scout Jamborees that my brother had, we had armadillo, gator, squirrel, rattlesnake, pickled pig's feet, and I'm not sure what else. I refused to eat any of it.

Haven't heard about that. But growing up in a very rural area, backwoods of N.C., we ate whatever we could grow or catch/shoot....We went to bed oft' times on an empty stomach, too!

I ate alligator & chocolate covered ants, yes real ants. I was 18 or so. So I consider that childhood LOL

Yes, they were the "instant cola" of the 60's. I think I liked the root beer flavor the best. I would take the packet, which was like Alka-Seltzer, and break little chunks off. I put them on my tongue and would feel the bubbling. They still make them, but where to buy?

@ rockin'robin I often miss some of the old foods. My son shot a squirrel last year and we made squirrel and dumplings. It was soo good to me.

@ Steinhaur - I haven't seen muscadines in ages. I finished the last jar of muscadine jelly two years ago. Wish they grew here, but they do not.

I'll send you some next season, just remind me.

I used to eat frog legs, squirrel, deer, game birds, pickled pig feet, boiled clams, fried breaded clams, crayfish (tiny lobster looks like but bigger than shrimp with claws), blue gills (fish), and salmon.

I was dared to lick off the ants. I was swimming with my friend one day when we noticed the ants going along a particular path. So she dared me to lick them.

I did. Maybe about 50 ants or so. They tasted completely tasteless. I could barely taste them at all. They're full of proteins though! So if you ever get lost in the wilderness, go for ants... They don't taste like anything!

I had horse meat in France when I was 12... It tasted so great... It was incredibly tender and the best meat I've ever eaten in my entire lifetime. I'm a bit of a cowgirl myself so I kind of regretted eating a horse, but I didn't know it at that time... It was still incredible when I found out that it was actually from a horse. Best meat ever.

I remember that I used to eat bread roll with chips inside..

Vegemite is another. :)

Crackers with honey on it.

My nieces and nephews, they consider PBJ sandwiches weird and would never eat it again.
