Even worse they make the Deaf Community ( and ALL people with hearing loss) look bad ... seriously, I'm a college student, I know deaf doctors, Lawyers, priests, teachers, .... but all that "positive - deaf are just like us" goes flying out the window when someones standing there begging for money solely because they can't hear !! It just makes me SOOOOOO angry. I've had many hearing people come up to me (knowing that I'm hoh/Deaf) and say how bad it makes "us"(hoh/deaf) look - it just reinforces all that crappy images of "deaf and dumb"(which in the 20/21centry means deaf and stupid, not deaf and mute)

I just want to say that I am sorry about this post, I know that I was out of line when I made this post.I was in a mood. I know deep down in my heart that it's not true and I should know better and I know that most hearies are not bad. So I just want to say that I am sorry.

I have only had a deaf peddler come up to me once. He really was deaf! Anij, the book you are thinking of is "Deaf Peddler: Confessions of an Inside Man" by Dennis Buck. I have that one.

The thing that annoys me the most is (like other people have said) being told "never mind" when I didn't hear something. The person most guilty of this is my wife, even though she knows I have a mild hearing loss! Also sometimes I will say "what? I didn't hear you" and she says "oh I was talking to the cat" - well I still want to know what you said! I know you were talking, I just didn't hear you, so please tell me what you said!

Can't wait to get HA's so maybe this won't happen quite so often.

I just get frustrated because even if they really are having a rough time of it because our society see so few of "us" ... that "Deaf guy" ... ends up being what people remember:

" ohh yea .. I saw this deaf guy once, selling those cards - you know..."

He came up to my table while I was eating in Union Station in DC. I was talking with my wife, she is hearing and doesn't sign. So when he showed us the cards I looked up at him and said "are you really deaf?" He said yes! I thought well, anyone can learn yes and no so I said "why are you selling these cards?" He said he was a Gallaudet student and he was trying to make money for school books. I said "well no thanks, I don't need those cards." Now that I think about it, why didn't he use VR to pay for school books like every other student at Gally?

Please try reading a little more carefully. Anij said that not all deaf peddlers are deaf. No need to get your back up.

I find using sign with peddlers is a good way to flush out the con artists.

Anyway, what ticks me off most about hearies are the "deaf groupies." Luckily as a teacher now and not doing as much interpreting, I don't encounter them very much anymore.
 
What ticks me off most about one lady asked me about can deaf people have sex? Can we hear moan sound? I answered yes, we can but we cannot hear. We don't need the sound. We can feel. A lady was speechless. I think she was so idiot!

Dennis Buck? I think I know him from my high school. He is about 3 or 4 years younger than I. I remember he had made honor roll often. It is hard for a deaf person to find a decent job and that really irks me. AB, now you can add this reason to the list of what ticks me(us) off about hearies.
 
What I hate about hearing people is that they refuse to communicate with me on paper and pen or try to interact with deaf people with patience.

Yes I've had that one a few times, plus the amazement at my being married and having kids, its always the brain dead ones that come out with this.

I had a hearing roommate who was like that and other deafies complained that she suffered from the Zinger syndrome. I don't fit some hearing and deaf idea of what an ideal deaf person should be like. I don't try to fit in that view anymore as it's pointless.

Yeah, we had a few of those in our ITP. Our teacher spoke to us about people who are not comfortable in their own culture and seek Deaf culture as a refuge. (Some of those people are what I meant by "deaf groupies.") For example, one woman got all up in arms because we were having a unit on learning SEE and she refused because "it's not the language of deaf people." I imagine her lecturing her clients who do use SEE about how they should be using ASL. *shudder*

Some people forget there's a line between activism and patriarchal behavior.
 
what ticks me off is when they don't look at you when they're speaking (Hello I'm trying to read lips) or when they mumble...Ugh I hate that!! Also I hate it when they say oh forget it, when I ask them to repeat what the said that I didn't get.

one time while my friend Heather and I were at the restrant and we were signing, then a waitress came up with paper and pen, handing them to me. I raised an eye bow at him and said, "What's this for?" You should've see his face, he was so shocked!! "You can speak?" I look at Heather and we both laughed, "Yeah, just because I signed doesn't mean I can't speak." He asked, "Are you Deaf?" I was like, "Yeah." He was like, "How, your Deaf....Deaf people can't speak at all...they're deaf and mute!" I glared at him, "Well, aren't I sitting here in front of you, speaking? Not all deaf people are mute, we can speak you know if we learned!!!" "Oh....oh I'm sorry." "Don't be sorry when you're not!! I would like another waitress please, as you have offended me and behalf of all deaf people."
 
Something related to "oh never mind" when I didn't understand something...this probably happens to other HOH people too. When I say "please repeat that" they say something different! Sometimes it is helpful but sometimes I would rather confirm what I *thought* I heard.
 
Wow that could be a long list...

*When they tell me I speak so well
*When I tell someone I am Deaf and I need to see their lips when they speak...and then they don't look at me
*When they throw things at me
*When they over enunciate
*When they scream at me
*When they think I am lying when I say that I am Deaf
*When they talk to me like I am a toddler who failed pre-school
*When they assume I don't work
*When they ask me where my interpretor is, and then are shocked when I don't have one
*When they tell me how small my BTE hearing aids are, and noticable at all like in an attempt to make me feel better about something I don't feel bad about
*When they assume because I have hearing aids I can hear


I could make this list last for days....:giggle:
 
When they throw things at you? For real??

Why in the world would stupid hearing people throw things at you?
