What is Your Pet Peeve?

Small talk is the hardest thing for me. I just don't know how to ask questions and be interested without coming across as extremely awkward.

Your brother lives in Costa Rica? Wow! It must be really hot there right now since it's summertime. Sorry you're bored... just keep posting on AD! Also I don't know if you use an instant messenger but you can always IM me at NID2008 (AIM and Yahoo).

Exactly, I felt same way. I am not good at small talk, and don't know how to ask people questions, either.

My brother owns 6th. Yes, it's pretty hot. 80-85 degrees right now. That's why I go to the beach for a swim but I am not allowed to swim under in the water because I still have an ear infection and that I am still coughing, which is very annoying. LOL. This am, I found a small blood when I spit out, that concerned me. I paged my PCP back home and he said he wants me to go to the hospital here in Costa Rica for testing, etc. (He said my blood tests looked good after my last physical examination when I saw him.)
OK, I will. Thanks.
I don't know how to use AIM and Yahoo because I never use them. Only email.

Email works too. Or we can PM on AD.

People that get angry at you for something that is beyond your control.

Friend of mine is getting mad at me for not being able to see a picture. <very frustrated>

wow, nika. i don't understand how someone can be upset for something like that. it's not like you can help it.

Sometimes people get frustrated they can't share something visual with me.

what i try to do is ask people to describe a visual the best they can. that usually helps them feel better about my not being able to see what they are describing. if they happen to be describing an object, i ask to examine it tactully while they describe it to me.

I do the same, but I get a lot of "but it's just not the same." Or something like "I can't describe the beauty of the sunset."

Isn't the purpose of shortcuts like "u" and "r" to make typing faster?

yes, but i also think it's done out of pure laziness. how much extra effort does it take to type a complete word? (warning: i'm starting to sound like my 7th grade english teacher. <giggle>)

I'm with HearAgain on this one - it does not take much longer to type a complete word. I hate having to decipher a paragraph because of so many abbreviations while reading it. I have skipped over entire posts that are full of the "u" and "r" and other abbreviations because I don't want to bother deciphering it.

Wow. I don't enjoy it either, especially since I usually have to decipher it through my screen reader (e.g. if someone writes "str8" for "straight" my screen reader says "s, t, r, eight"). But I am still interested in the content of their post.

exactly.

i'm also interested in what people have to say, but if their posts contain too much shorthand, i skip to the next one because i don't have the time to decipher it. if someone wants me to read their post, i expect them to take the time necessary to write it clearly. the only exception to this are asl users since asl has a completely different grammatical context than english.

no, it's not the same, but some people are really good at giving visual descriptions. others could care less and simply say, "i don't know" when you ask them what something looks like. my first boyfriend used to do that and it drove me nuts. i don't expect people to give me a perfect description, but i do expect them to try the best they can.

gotta love the "Pager Language" / "TXT/SMS Language" especially when people use it when writing longer sentences. :mad2:

People that judge homeless folks without having any idea of their circumstances. E.g. saying "get a job." There could be a million reasons why someone could not hold a job.

I totally agree there. My mum used to get that a lot. She wasn't homeless. She just had mental health issues and she was French. It seemed the combination of the two made people (employers especially) want to avoid employing her.

When she asked my brother and sister inlaw for financial help my sister got really mad at her and told her to 'get a job'.

dreama,

how did prospective employers know about your mother's mental health issues? did she mention them? employers can't discriminate on the basis of mental illness. if she has a strong resume, she could have sued for discrimination.

People that get upset because i said 1 curse word. Geez, I dont like them either, but i am 19, and if i see fit...

I know what you mean. It happens here too.

I got lost a bit before christmas. Their was this person their but they wouldn't communicate using block capital letters but they kept grabbing me when I tried to move away. It was a really awful experience so in the end I lost my rag completely and said:

"Are you going to XXX help me or not?"

I understand. People can be really mean like that.

Well it was a bit more complicated then that. While I was growing up she NEVER accepted the fact that she had mental health issues. But with some people they are very noticable by the way they behave so of course it was obvious. Same with her being French. People could probably tell by their accent.

Some people are openly say they don't like French people which is really wrong. They were like that when she had cancer. According to my dad a doctor said their wasn't anything really wrong with her "Being french she was bound to make a fuss over nothing". That happened just before she died.

i hate this too. years ago there used to be a few residents who were infamous for leaving their walkers in front of their apartment door. after several people fell and injured themselves, a rule was created which bans objects from being placed in the hallway unless it's a package delivered by UPS or the postal service.

My previous neibour was terrible for that. He used to quite deliberately leave things lying around or piled on top of my shed door. He turned the whole area into an obsticle course. And he used to leave broken glass and food lying around and dig holes in the garden. I kept having to complain to the council and He made complaints about the noise of my rat and chinchilla excercise wheels. Fortunately he's gone now. He got caught dealing cocain.

why did he give you hard time? was it because of the noise of your rat & chinchilla? did he live next to you?
