What is Your Pet Peeve?

Another pet peeve... I really hate it when people talk about their over-hyped, over exaggerated mental illnesses (and other conditions) just to draw attention to themselves.

In response to this peeve, I really hate it when people think that people with mental illnesses, or illnesses of any kind for that matter, are exaggerating their symptoms just to draw attention to themselves.

thank you, nika! i couldn't agree more! <smile>

Suffice it to say that I fit the criteria listed in the DSM-IV under section 309.81.

nika,

i'm glad you don't feel as though you have to explain yourself to david. i get the same questions about my bipolar in that some people think it's a character flaw (which it isn't; it's a chemical imbalance in the brain), something i'm personally responsible for or an "illness" (note that illness is in quotes) i use as an excuse. as long as you and i fit the criterion in the dsm for our diagnoses, it really doesn't matter what others think.

Same here! The worst is inconsistency (shoveled, unshoveled, somewhat shoveled, then unshoveled again, etc.) cause then you think, oh no more snowbank, and then it comes right back! I get so confused and nervous.

yep, so do i! in fact, there were a few times where the snow was so deep yesterday that poor tigger had trouble finding the sidewalk. i ended up veering into a few parking lots as a result.

I hear ya! I have bipolar and major depression as well, along with ptsd due to my childhood and my ex husband. People that don't understand or believe in mental illness do like people who don't understand deaf/hoh, blind or deaf/blind and make fun of us because of ignorance of the issue. Just like the kids in school on lunch break making you sit in a different place because you aren't like them and they call you names and pick on you, it's the fear of what they don't know or don't understand. If he went through what any one of us has lived through and understood anything about it then he wouldn't say things like he said. I dare him to live through being raped and beaten or left for dead or something just as horrible... ok my little rant is over.....

exactly! great post, steph9700! <smile>

precisely! that's why i try not to let the ignorance of others bother me.

Basically it's all about people. If it's a thing that's annoying I can really just say "meh" and let it go

Ignorant people: Particularly about being HA, some people just don't know but the rest seem to equate it with being mentally retarded or needing to have stuff screamed at me.

People without responsibility: This goes for most people unfortunately. So many people seem to believe that whenever somebody does/say something rude/mean that they are automatically made mad by them and they "need" to do something back. example:

A: "Faggot"
B: "GODDAMNIT I'M GONNA BEAT YOUR ASS!"
Person B proceeds to beat person A's ass, person B is grounded/arrested/whatever and goes
B: "WTF! he called me a faggot he had it coming to him! It's his fault for making me ANGRY!"

This type of childish behavior and thinking belongs in preschool. At 14+ you should've already realized that it's a bad idea to let other people be in charge of your emotions and actions

The girl next to me in biology class: I'm sorry but your manga is incredibly crappy and yet you insist on shoving it in my face in some misguided attempt to make me a part of your own little personal fan club of awkward nerds and geeks you obtained with your ruthless cockteasing and your "Learn to draw all your favorite anime/manga friends in 30 minutes a day!" book. I'm not interested and I don't think you're hot because you can squeeze your "B" size boobs together and make a kissy face. I'm currently using that memory whenever I need to kill a boner.

I also really hate TV dinners. They're disgusting, bad tasting, and of poor nutrition. If I'm hungry and can't find anything else to make a meal with I'll eat some fruit/vegetable raw. Best convinience food I ever had.

how nice for pfh to say something like that on christmas eve. that's the holiday spirit! NOT.

my pet peeve are complicated bills where you can't make sense of the taxes you're paying or why.

pfh has just been added to my ignore list.

moving on...

my pet peeve are books written in such a complicated fashion almost as if the author wants to "show off" their vocabulary and/or intelligence. it's amazing how well a sentence can be expressed when using basic vocabulary.

if you don't like it david, then don't read our posts. consider yourself fortunate that you don't have a mental illness.

this is alldeaf -- a forum where we can talk about *all* kinds of topics. if you don't like nika or i talking about our mental illnesses, put us on your ignore list.

by the way, i could care a flying fig what you think about my bipolar disorder.

1) Who said anything about you or Nika?

2) How do you know I don't have an emotional or mental disorder? Just because I don't go around telling people about it, does not mean it doesn't exist.

You sound a lot like my family right now.

David, you don't know anything about me except that I'm blind and dating a Deaf person. You don't even know how old I am. So your statement holds no ground. If you knew something about me that led you to believe I don't have PTSD, and then questioned me, then I would answer your question. But seeing as the only thing you know so far is a few pet peeves of mine, I won't even bother to answer.

Suffice it to say that I fit the criteria listed in the DSM-IV under section 309.81.

I didn't make a statement. I asked a question. YOU refused to answer the question, which gives me the impression that you are self-diagnosed PTSD, rather than by a psychiatrist, which is the way its supposed to be.

1. you said in your post that you don't like people who talk about their mental illnesses. since nika and i have one, i think it's safe to assume that includes us.

2. i don't think you have a mental illness or disorder because if you did, you wouldn't claim that nika and i (or anyone who chooses to talk about their illness) talk about them in order to seek attention. if i am wrong in my assumption, my apologies.

I'm an attention seeker.

I also have some mental issues.

that's cool, pfh. i think we all have problems with seeking attention in one way or another. as for mental illnesses and disorders, it's common for people to have at least one during the course of their lifetime.

Nope, that is a flat-out lie. I never said I don't like people who talk about their mental illnesses. The preson who I am talking about has not even posted in this forum lately. Therefore, your assumption (on both counts) is wrong. Remember, "ASSUME" makes an "ASS" of "U" and "ME".

Yes, I do. I have been diagnosed by two different psychiatrists as having PTSD. I take Pexeva-20 for it. Look it up. I just don't like to talk about it because most people don't know exactly what PTSD is.
