What Induces Fear?

Babyblue, my anxiety has mostly to do with the fact I lived the first part of my life in an orphanage and I was repeatedly traumatized for years and years. It has nothing to do with my blindness.

Would you call deafness an auditory disability?

I don't think deafness or blindness are disabilities.

Deafness and blindness are defined by the amount of functional deafness/blindness in day to day life. Most blind people have some residual vision, but it may be pretty useless. Likewise, even if someone is only technically moderately deaf, if s/he can't understand speech, s/he's often considered functionally deaf. So getting into the amount of residual hearing/vision is getting more technical than most people can either handle or care to know.

all one needs to understand about deafblindness is that it defines anyone with combined vision and hearing loss.

I do write on medical form or somewhere that I have a hearing disability. It doesn't bother me. I do my best to making sure everything is clearly understood by many by using politically-corrected terms because I am neither hearing nor completely deaf but the term "deaf" implies completely deaf which is not what I am.

exhausting, huh?

It is exhausting, but what about blind is not politically correct?

"deaf" can also define anyone with any degree of hearing loss.

jiro, why not use the term "hard of hearing?"

the nfb (national federation of the blind) encourages all legally blind people (as well as the general public) to use the word "blind" when referring to someone who is legally or totally blind. i applaud them for that.

blind is a politically correct term but can confusing to others if you are actually not completely blind. I believe most people can automatically discern the difference between "legally-blind" and blind.

I am close eanough... I have a 5 degree field and 20/200.

Exactly. The reason legally blind people are considered legally blind is because their vision is close enough to blindness that the law decided to recognize them as blind as well.

Back to fear...

that wasn't clear from your post because you mentioned indicating that you have a "hearing disability."

I used either one lol depending on how the question is phrased on the form.

exactly... that's why i use a politically-correct term to accurate describe the condition because it is easily understood by many. i hope. anyway yes - back to topic!

I was explaining "legally blind" as a reason for why it's okay to refer to legally blind people as blind, but that's all right. Anyway back to fears.

Eye drops.

babyblue,

in my case, my anxiety is caused by 2 things: ptsd and manic episodes due to my bipolar.

because of the 4 traumas i experienced over the span of 19 years, i have problems with anxiety. manic episodes also cause anxiety because i feel so wired up (as if i have tons of energy) that i feel as though i could literally jump out of my skin.

anxiety really has nothing at all to do with my blindness.

yes. i was specifically referring to your reasons of feeling anxiety in public place. For example - you said that you don't like being touched and there are too many noises around that confuse you.... thus you feel anxious about going to crowdy/public place.

same for deaf people feeling anxious about going to social gatherings because they are not about to hear/lip-read and you felt awkward & out of place.... thus you prefer to be alone or to be with a small group.
