I have always eaten it that way. Also watermelon. My husband and daughters all think it is weird, so it may be a somewhat uncommon taste.

French fries, fried chicken, hamburgers, hotdogs, spam, etc. Stuff like that. i also eat rooster sauce on my ramen noodles and tacos.

Other things I do is mix Ranch Dressing with rooster sauce to eat with fried chicken. It gives it a tangy flavor.

I don't see anything wrong with pepper/salt in ketchup because these food already have salt/pepper in it.
