what a load of rubbish!!!!

Apparentlly with a Ci you're hearing is cured and you're not deaf anymore

:giggle::roll::giggle:

Do you mean if a baby it born deaf they would a cochlear implant right away without asking the parents if they want their baby to have one? I would sues the doctor that did that!

Didn't you already know that those of us with CIs do not accept our deafness and only receive them so we can "fix" ourselves and become hearing people?

I don't understand Jake's post. <confused>

it's the  pix of man frowning, hand on his face like he's having a headache. the caption says "aw jeez not this shit again!"

:ty: Jiro. Every time someone tells me this pic is posted, it makes me laugh.

Jake does have a point though.

Most deaf people know that CI's ARENT a curee

I don't understand the kind of mentality where people think CIs cure deafness. When you remove your CIs, you are still deaf.

I agree with ya...

I don't want to fix my deafness...yes I don't know sign language , but otherwise I've accepted myself.

I only did CI to be able to hear better as my aid didn't benefit me anymore.

and I agree with HearAgain , I wouldn't do fully implantable.I just want my peace in night!

I would not chose the totally implantable too. I just dont want to go that far. I just want to be in a world of silence when i want to. with a total implantable i have no choice but to hear ALL the time.

Each of us has the right to choose CIs for ourselves as long as we have appropriate expectations. There is nothing wrong with having the desire to hear better nor does it mean we don't accept being deaf.

When my parents argue, when I overhear nasty conversations at the mall, when I hear piercing sounds from machines, when I listen to very loud sounds, I just pull off my CI and my pain is cured!

Oh, being able to hook up my CI to my laptop and listen to music is one of the best things ever!!! That way I am the only one listening to rap with tons of swearing and awesome beats and my parents have no freaking clue about it.

Just smile and sign "OK." People like that are best left to their delusions.:D

You all are one hundred percent right. The man does not accept his deafness and want to rid of deafness for good, which is impossible to get rid of.

I remember when I was in college(Deaf Program) in Seattle, Washington, there was a young or close to 30ish man who want to have his hearing back (former hearie) so bad that he had asked his doctor to fix his hearing. I don't remember if there is a CI or just trying to fix his nerve or what. Then after the surgery he had very bad infection in his ear or ears (that was a long time ago around the late 1970) and eventually he became deaf. He was soooo distraught and was very angry with his doctor. He was going to sue his doctor. He wanted to blame him, but his doctor had warned him if the HOH man can not take care of his ears due to infection because there was a 50 percent chance to hear again or not if proper health with no infection. The surgery was not perfect and really it is the HOH man's fault that he want to get his hearing back so bad in a hurry or just learn to accept his deafness.

Yeah, hearing people think that deafness is bad and so are all the disabilities. The hearing people want to "fix" us to be normal like them. They do not accept our disabilities for who we are. That is not their fault, but at least they should accept us for who we are. Simple as that.

Bebonang, I am seeing the same today with CIs. There's formerly hearing people who are so "desperate" to hear that they think CIs will cure their deafness and restore their hearing to normal. Remember I talked about that lady with only 60db hearing loss who got a CI, so far she's hearing worse than she did with HAs and doesn't seem happy. She's also unhappy that she lost 20db of her residual hearing and can no longer hear unaided in that implanted ear.

I tried to get her to be realistic about CIs and the fact they are not a cure nor do they guarantee anything. I also suggested she try better HAs with more amplification and give transposition a chance since she's missing her high frequencies(very common among deaf/severely HOH people) but she was being rude about it and decided to ignore me because she didn't want to admit any of the cons/negetive things about CIs.

I had another lady say that HAs are not natural. Well CIs aren't natural either and I fear she has unrealistic expectations, coupled with too much low frequency residual hearing, she may well end up disapointed. I would love to have as much residual hearing as she, but that will have to wait for tomorrow's technology. Today I will make the best use of what I have with powerful HAs.

deafdude,

The person you mentioned who had high expectations for CI has herself to blame. I also blame her audi and CI surgeon if they did not inform her about what to expect as far as CIs are concerned. When my audi and CI surgeon explained the benefits vs. risks of CI to me, they told me flat out that chances were likely that I would only hear environmental sounds given the fact that I was profoundly deaf for 10 years prior. I'm glad they were upfront with me because if this had not been the case, I would have been disappointed and frightened about being unable to understand some speech for 3 months post activation.
